Paid apps appear in Android Market
Looks like Google is officially in the mobile app store game -- Android Market now contains paid apps. We haven't gotten the update on our G1 yet, but if you have RC33 it's rolling out now -- reboot and let us know what your first purchase is!

@HTCMogul.Info
There IS a fee to get your apps in the android market, and why in the world would they block a browser regardless of what rendering engine it uses?
But it's $25 to pay for access to Market publishing, the Android SDK is free, as opposed to $99 for access to the iPhone SDK... at least with the Android Market you can have a working app before you pay the fee (which is almost four times less anyway).
Is everyone thats able to access the paid apps on TMobile. I'm on att and no luck yet
Doesn't it have to do with Google Checkout? I'm pretty sure you don't have to be on T-Mobile...I haven't tried buying an app yet but I'm not on T-Mobile and I'm pretty sure it works no matter what the carrier.
tmo here, but when I remove my sim all the paid apps disappear. that's interesting, no?
G1 and iPhone can now have a fart off!
I have RC33, but I just lost edge/3g and it doesn't want to come back...tmobile hates me :'(
I've lost my patience, when it comes to patience. I was cool with the idea of waiting a bit for the G1 to develop and beat out the ______. At this point with all these other sexy, and cool polished and finished phones out I can't hold back, plus i nicked up my G1 snowboarding. The camera is sooo bad, that's one of the reasons i'm leaning towards the Memoir over the Pre, and because I dont feel like faking my death to get out of my T-Mobile contract. I do give the G1 props though, it's definitely better than the Sidekick, Wing, Shadow, and Dash. I wish I had DeLorean (and a Flux Capicitor), so I could go back and buy the Storm. Fail:(
so, cboy007 are you saying that you can see the paid apps on your phone now ?
I rebooted, and did not see the paid apps on Market.
How do I get the brushed aluminum look on the task bar ( on top)?
Seems like a custom theme. Head over to XDA dev. to check them all out. You need RC33 LITE for most themes.
That is the Macdroid theme from XDA...you have to root your phone in order to use it, does not require RC33lite though
Root your phone? That's disgusting.
I probably would have those paid apps if the bloody 3G towers would work. Seems T-Mobile is down again in Minneapolis again. Hurray.
root youre g1 pretty simple process
i'm hoping money will drive more devs. to produce quality apps, so we'll see. oh also i dont have any paid apps open to me in the market.
anyone else's G1 in philly not getting any data whatsoever?
on the phone with a rep as i type. once again i am one pissed hedgehog :\
I'm in Atlanta and not getting any data.. what gives?
It just exploded in a BFBVFS on me in Chicago, now nothing is working at all.
oooh, cant wait to get the update and fiddle with this for myself, a lot of the open source apps are fantastic, but now we should really see some good, useful apps *big smile*
yay now everyone with a g1 will be showing off their awesome beer pouring app or some other stupid ass thing that somehow seems worth $1
lol @ the huge flood of farting apps. ;p Even sillier when you consider there are quite a few FREE farting apps already.
But there are some reasonable apps out there. I bought SMSpeaker for a buck and am quite happy with it. Like the name implies, all it does is speak sms to you, but it does it well. Didn't even realize G1 had speaking capabilities until now.
Military Madness seems tempting, I might get that later, I have fond memories of playing that on the TurboGrafx.
Why are people complaining about what Apps are on the store... So the iPhone has 100% useful apps! Wow!
Glad my G1 has the ability to return the item and get my money back. :P
has anybody bought an app yet?
Yep. Pretty easy to do. And refunding is just as easy. Glad I can refund! Some games looks cool, but they are not. Wish there was a screenshot system.
Nothing in the UK yet, despite me running the US RC33 firmware.
Where did this screenshot come from? Why does it have the OSX brushed look? HAX.
Anyway, I have RC33, gave it a reboot for kicks and I still don't have a single paid-app like the screenshot dictates.
This entire article is SHOOPED.
It's a custom theme from a rooted phone.

Hopefully Google have some useful apps worth paying for and worth getting. Some guys were bragging about the farting app that got into the top 10 in the Apple app store list of most popular. Stuff like that are really useless. My ex's a programmer and he and a bunch of friends started making games for the Google Android Market, I can't wait to see some of those.

Ugh, I was expecting this, as soon as developers get to ask money for their apps, you'll get some crazy nuts that ask a dollar for Animal Sounds...
I was just starting to like the fact that all apps were free.
Maybe Google should evaluate which apps are worth money.
Sure, I'd be willing to pay some money for a nice RSS reader or maybe even a new browser or skin or a game, but useless stuff like this?!
The G1 is a marketing POS just like that pile o crap iphone. Proprietary locked-down buyme drm contract GARBAGE.
Don't even try to compare this crap with linux. I can go online right now and browse literally thousands upon thousands of absolutely and totally free aps for a thousand flavors of a true open-source platform. The G1 is none of this and it and google can both blow t-mobile for all I gas.
Aviator watch? What? The g1 is a strap-on now? Strap it to your forehead and have your friend's just point you in the right direction. all for a price YEAH!
@ john
Please list known, open source, Linux-based cellular phones for sale via major carriers in the U.S.
yeah, what I'm trying to say is: what the f**k are you talking about? Who compared Android to Linux? You know if the voices are only inside your head, they're not real people, right?
I also know what you're getting at... Android is supposed to be open-source, blah blah blah and its not really if you compare it to a true open source community blah blah blah. I'm so glad we have you here to point this out, no one else ever realized this ever because we're so stupid.
Here's what kills me about Apps and App stores... to what do people compare to? I see these retard G1 owners complaining about lame apps... yeah, what was your last phone? What great and wonderful apps did you have before? Have you actually SEEN the Apple app store with your own 2 eyes and realize there is just as much garbage there? Have you been to Handango? And did we take into account that the iPhone is going to be 3 years old this year, 3 years of app development VS Android's 5 months in the wild?
All "open-source" really means here is that Android is going to be more liberal with what makes it onto the App store. I would rather have an app store with EVERYTHING available(including low quality garbage) VS a company who's so tight fisted that not only do some apps not even make it, some get pulled later. Just because there are tons of garbage apps doesn't mean that great new apps are suddenly going to appear if you ban them all.
All apps and app stores are a work in progress. Just need some damn patience.
That clock app is free on my phone, so I downloaded it. I don't get it.
Anyway, the paid apps aren't showing up for me (except for that clock which was listed as free).
How does the refund system work? Do you have a certain amount of time to 'return' an app for whatever reason?
Does Apple offer this in their store?
mid-day yesterday priced apps started showing up. some of the costs seem a bit outrageous (9.99 for rockband mobile on a non-touchscreen? that's one note at a time right?).
the great thing is you can return any purchase once within 24 hours from purchase (not download). so if you find out gFart is better than Fartdoid then you can return the one and use the other.
I've purchased and have been playing Aevum Obscurum and Retro Defense, and am happy with my purchases.
i meant non-multitouch - cant do two notes at once.
I hacked my G1 so I never have to pay for apps...
Congratulations.
Looks like droidFart is the best fart app so far! Pretty disgusting!
That apps are there, you just need to sort by most recent, not most popular.
The race is on!!! Now, even more people will be struggling to find Android App Developers. We got sick of trying to find folks through traditional searches, so we created http://www.AppDeveloperList.com. If you know a developer that is not on the Android App Developer List, please tell them about it.
The First 20 Android App Developers to email info@appdeveloperlist.com with the subject "Android engadget" will receive a free listing
on the Android App Developer List for three (3) months - after 3 months, they'll have the option to continue at 99¢ per month.
Optimists say "Yay! Capitolism!"
Pessimists say "Crap, now I have to spend more money."
I say "Great. Now the few free apps are going to be 'Lite' versions."
By the way, why don't they call them 'Light' versions?
Those who have paid apps now appearing please remove your sim and check again. I only show them when my tmo sim is inserted, not with it out though online via wifi. Folks who are not seeing paid apps in Market, are you on tmo or using dev 1s on other carriers?
This is ridiculous. What's the point of being Open-Source? I don't know if I just don't fully understand but, I thought Open-Source = Free, and (In terms of not paying an initial price) Non-Profit. I think Apple is having too great of an impact on too many things.
