Shuttle XPC Barebone SX58H7 wants a piece of your Core i7
Shuttle's newfangled XPC Barebone SX58H7 is hungry, and nothing but an Intel Core i7 CPU and twin GPUs hooked up in unison can satisfy it. Those looking to pack a lot of power into a relatively small box need look no further, as Shuttle's latest SFF case comes loaded with an X58 Express chipset, 500 watt power supply, two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots, space for up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM and room for two SATA II hard drives. You'll also find twin gigabit Ethernet jacks and a case that looks pretty much exactly like every other Shuttle case produced in the past five years. Oh, and then there's the heart-stopping €483 ($611) price tag. Gotta hate that.

But what can fit into those two PCI-E 16x slots? Only SFF cards? Or can I put two GTX295s in there? :3
You put desktop cards in there - I have yet run into a Shuttle case that doesn't fit full-size graphics cards. Some have problems with full-size DVD drives, but that's all I can think of.
I'm seriously tempted to pick one of these up when I start my new job in July :) Been looking to build a SICK HTPC/gaming rig :)
The press release says the shuttle includes:
"Two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots can take up to two graphics cards in a single-slot design or a dual-slot graphics card."
Only one dual-slot graphics card would mean no quad-sli of two dual-slot gtx 295s.
that thing must be louder than my grans computer...
Its as loud as the fans you put in there.
Methinks that PSU won't be enough to handle GPUs....
I don't think so either. I just built an i7 system with 1 gpu and the 600W I got wouldn't cut it.
$600 for a barebones!? I know i7 is still very new but... $600 for a barebones?!
$250 X58 Mobo
$120 case
$80 mobo
$450 + $150 luxury tax. it'd almost be reasonable if the PSU wasnt a piece of junk that'll have to be replaced to run a real GPU + 2x HD.
Wow, nice specs, great price.
I take it back. I read the post wrong - thought they included 16GB of DDR3 in it.
The price is ridiculous, but worse is how loud these Shuttle barebones are; put in a higher-end video card and it sounds like a Vornado.
Vornado is that anything like a tornader
^^^and here we see the classic fail. spelling correction posts must always be double checked for fear of a self inflicted fail.^^^

They make whole-room "air circulators". In other words, really freaking powerful fans that are usually incredibly loud.
Oooh. Now that is what you get for trying to jump on the back of someones post train with an undeserved FAIL tag. You get shotgunned right off that sucker. Considering how far apart V is from T that would have to be one hell of a spelling error... but not out of the realm of possibility.
PS - Spell check is evil.

Does anyone use USB ports in the back??? I'd welcome 4 USB ports in the front and it would elimnate the need for a USB HUB!!!!!
The way the PCI-slots are arranged, you'll only be able to put single-slot width cards in the case - if you look at the image of the back of the case you'll see that the expansion slot covers are right next to each other.
Also, unless they've done something different with the drive cage, the inboard slot (closest to the center) is going to interefere with the card cage, so you would only be able to fit a low-profile card in there... the fastest low-profile PCI-e card I've seen is like a 9400GS.
I like Shuttles - I've owned 4 or 5 of them since way back to the SV25, but I don't understand why they're trying to make these high-end boxes in the smaller style case - they should be using their slightly larger boxes that have the PCI-e slots on the other side... more interior clearance, and bigger power supplies.
Now...will 500W of power supply be able to handle an i7 with 2 GPUs and 16gb DDR3???
Who the hell will ever want to buy this thing?
It's too big to be small and too small to be functional.
Me likes big, nice, easily upgradeable cases to my powerhouse beast; or/and small semi-invisible highly networked and interconnected cases to house systems that run specific tasks.
This half way, half backed solution , specially if they come with stupid price tags, never made much sense to me.
I have a Shuttle. It's easy to carry onto a plane (yes, they go through security just fine), more portable than a full tower, more powerful than all except a few laptops, and ultimately cheaper than a laptop you can't upgrade or a desktop which you'd have to check-in (and risk damage) or ship (and pay shipping costs). Of course, if you never have to move your desktop or are constantly on the move, then a full tower or laptop (respectively) is a much better choice.
Trust me, I've had UPS break a desktop and refuse to pay up the insurance, and have paid FedEx hundreds and hundreds of dollars to ship my computer equipment every year between home and school. SFFs like this are a godsend.
I use an SN45G as a LAN machine.
And if you don't see the appeal of SFF, then move on, please.
But will there be space for an easy-bake cake? Just put in for 20 minutes at 375F.
Temperature is about right, and hey, they're both slot loaded!
(Honestly I highly doubt the 60w light bulb in the Easy Bake gives you 375 degrees)
I'm interested. I mainly do Premiere and After Effects work. My current Athlon 4400 is kinda underpowered for what I use it for. A decent video card in slot one and a Blackmajic Intensity Pro in the other and I'm set!
I would think somebody that is going to drop the money for an i7 and dual GPUS could probably drop less coin on a regular sized case and a cart to move it around on. Or best case you could get an i7 and maybe a two single profile 4850s. Otherwise its not worth it unless you try to shoehorn a GTX295 into that case.
are there any internal shots?
Shuttles have excellent PSUs. Very stable. Can take much higher drain than the eqiv full desktop PSU. I've got an SG33G6 Deluxe with quad core and 8800GT and it is whisper quiet. I would buy another Shuttle no problem.
Agreed I had a SN27P2 ran silent, with a 8800GT in there. I also now have a K45 runs great also.
damn this is nice, and cheap, almost worth dumping my Quad Core for this
The first thing to go in that kit is the PSU. Dual cards and an i7 proc? 500w would struggle to even boot up properly...
ITS HERE! These are tweaked to fit the newest and largest GPUs. You can fit 2 single slot cards for one dual slot card of course...
@Aaron. 500WU in a shuttle can do pretty much anything you need it do, and then some. These things are 1.3 the size of a full ATX board, have less slots/ports and hence different power requirements.
