Vista SP2, Server 2008 R2 start making the rounds as Release Candidates
It looks like the long-awaited Release Candidate build of Vista SP2 is hitting the streets today, alongside Server 2008 R2. According to Ars Technica, these guys will soon be available for testers via Windows Update, as a standalone installer, or as a slipstreamed version for select languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, and Japanese. Rumor has it that Microsoft is gearing up for a final release date sometime in April.

Ahh, at long last, now we keep waiting for Windows 7.. first!
What I meant to say is, after this comes out we'll have our eyes on 7.
You forgot to add "FIRST!!!!11111oneeleven"...
Sorry, all Gundam fans comments are null and void on the internet, in perpetuity, so on and so forth. =p
I just finished installing it and...wtf, Win7??!!!
It wouldn't surprise me if this or the next SP will pretty much bring Vista to the level of Windows 7. Why do think the upgrade from Vista to 7 may be free....
Where have you been for the past few months?
So when would that put the release date for the "finished" product to be?
I'm holding off on a new computer 'till it gets released.
From the Engadget article above:
"Microsoft is gearing up for a final release date sometime in April."
SP1 in my opinion made Vista truly usable. I can't wait to see what SP2 does.
Is it me or does anyone think that Windows 7 is the next service pack of Vista?
Old joke is fucking old.
"Is it me or does anyone think that Windows 7 is the next service pack of Vista?"
Nope. But I do know that Snow Leopard will be.
@Look_Around_You
+1
Btw: good news :)
I demand Finnish be added!!! Why Microsoft, whyyyyyy...
koska
why do they even bother with vista? they should just get everyone to focus on getting windows 7 and winmo 7 out the door already!
no offense to current vista users though...
They bother with Vista because they want to improve it and it's the second most popular operating system ever made behind Windows XP.

Good enough for ya?
Because some people paid good money for it. They better continue to support it.
Because there was less of a choice when it became the only option in the majority of new PCs, (or for the majority of engadget readers -not writers... "because its all we know, and its sooo great and we love everything M$").
I don't think anyone who's tried the Windows 7 beta could ever get excited over Vista again.
I don't think service packs are here to get everyone party...
Hey guys! I just installed Vista SP2 and thought I'd invite you all to a night of drinking to celebra- You serious?
awwwwwwwww
I'm loving the Windows 7 beta but the included IE8 is beyond lousy. Constant crashes and freezes. It pushed me to try Firefox for the first time but I'd rather have a usable IE.
@ dwboston
lol Useable IE.... lol......
firefox FTW! or even chrome if you have enough ram
All jokes about it installing Windows 7 aside, it actually upgrades you to RISCOS.
Aw, really? I was really hoping for AmigaOS... :(
dude I literally just upgraded to BeOS R5.03.... yeah seriously look

blazing speed without the bloat lag and and awesome filesystem (BFS ... basically a 64bit FS with automatic indexing that is so fast it makes you LOL) that MS Apple and Linux still haven't matched
I welcome and patiently wait for this service pack. After Service Pack 1, Vista Business x64 has been perfect.
That's 2008 R2 .. not 2008 SP2.
This isn't some free update you're getting...
Not until it's out in april.......
You = Fail @ trolling
Uhhhhh, yes, it is a free update. SP2 is NOT R2. R2 is another animal entirely
Yeah sorry guys, only now am I reading it concerns Vista/2008 and not 7 / 2008R2.
I've been way too deep in the beta program lately. Seen nothing but 7 for the last couple of days.
Oh and FYI .. I wasn't trolling Phenoum :\
SP2 is a cumulative service pack. If you have been using windows update, there is nothing much in the pack that will affect one.
RTFA... it's not Server 2008 R2. It's Server 2008 SP2. SP2 is a free update, R2 is the server version of Windows 7, which is a paid (not free) upgrade.
