LG affirms that 12 megapixel cameraphone is in the works
Here at MWC, the only cellphone maker to actually come forward with proof of a 12 megapixel phone was Sony Ericsson. Still, you know that everyone else is apt to follow suit as quickly as possible, and it seems that LG will be one of the first. In fact, said company "absolutely" has a 12 megapixeler in the works. That's according to Jeremy Newing, LG Mobile's head of marketing in the UK, who also proclaimed that the KS360 would be LG's first Android phone. In his words: "We'll very much be releasing a 12MP cameraphone. However, it's important that people realize when taking 12MP images, they'll be using huge amounts of data, and it will be more difficult to do things like send such files." Honestly, we're a bit tired of the megapixel race -- get an optical zoom onto a slim cellphone, and then we'll talk.

Pfft, nobody cares about LG.
Jesus will come again in June, available for free on contract.
Preach it, brother!
I thought Jesus was rumored to come out in mid March?
Most probably it will just be another poor man's imitation of smartphone, short on features and long on hype and ads, aimed at cheapskates and illiterate teenagers.
Just like the previous 2 versions.
Anyway, we' ll see if from Cupertino will finally emerge something that can play in the same league as the big boys.
I doubt it though.
Jesus is in JAIL!
Everyone who goes there always says that's where they found him.
"Anyway, we' ll see if from Cupertino will finally emerge something that can play in the same league as the big boys."
I'm sorry, just which "big boys" are you referring to?
@ProfessorDex
I suppose we'd better Jailbreak Jesus.
12MP on a tiny sensor... What's the point?
So I can finally fit your mother into a single picture, no more panorama shots needed.
So they can stick a big '12 MEGAPIXEL' sticker on for the retards who think it means better pictures.
Totally agree. 5mp is the perfect size for point & shoot. Prints well, stores fairly easily. What I want is short startup & lag times, not 8, 12, whatever, mps. It's almost like they're intentionally pushing up these numbers to avoid the real problem: That 2-3 seconds per shot is unacceptable.
Lets go back to 0.3 megapixel cameras. Their pixels are much bigger. So what if the image is 640x480? We'll interpolate it, because 0.3 mp will have so much detail it will outperform 12 megapixels!
@ Richard Lai
i know, i can't see any good reason for 12mp on a camera phone sensor, i'd much rather see a 5 - 8MP with optical zoom, digital zoom may aswell not exist and i just hate the inability to zoom.
Agreed. The quality of the optics makes a big difference with sensors this size.
Zoom is funny but for a common usage is pretty irrelevant.
"Agreed. The quality of the optics makes a big difference with sensors this size."
While correct, the quality of optics makes a big difference with ALL sensors regardless of size
Samsung did have a 5MP camera with a 3x optical zoom but the photos it took were terrible. Very blocking, colours were off, no sharpness and poor low-light shots (due to small sensor size). They are too chunky for the average mobile phone and the trade off doesn't seem worth it.
What we do need is a better image processor in these phones for lower time between shoots, face detection, image stabilising and faster shutter speeds. All with a LED & Xenon flash so when you want to use your phone as a torch, you can, and when you need a proper flash, it's also there.
Got Milf?
*high five* ^,^
I was thinking the same exact thing! Haha.
Is that Rhianna's swollen left cheekbone after Chris Brown smacked her up?
ProfessorDex is demonstrating he's hip to the current events with his clever comment about domestic abuse! That was a real side-splitter.
It's Helena Christensen

Frankfurter is demonstrating he's a total douche without a sense of humour.
Ahem. Isn't the Memoir a Samsung? LG do make the 8MP Renoir, however.
The Memoir is a Samsung phone, not LG...
12mp on a sensor the size of pin head? A waste of time.
I would like to see Nikon or Canon go the other way and incorporate a 3G cellphone into one of their DSLR's.
holy crap that would be amazing
Oy vey... That would be massively impractical. (Especially with a long telephoto attached.)
It may be impractical to use, but it sure would be funny to see someone trying to hold a DSLR to their ear.
I was wondering about the same thing recently. Why don't Canon, Nikon, Kodak, etc. develop smartphones built around awesome cameras? Perhaps they could be called "smartcameras".
There are a lot of common components between the two (CPU,memory, storage, etc.) and the latest camera additions are WiFi (for uploading photos) and GPS (for geotagging). They just need to adjust the form factor a bit, add 3G and a touchscreen and use an OS like Android.
Unfortunately this PR stunt is bound to fool many naive, materialistic consumers...
I agree enuff with the pixel race. What is the point! Why is having a camera on a phone becoming more important than having a mobile phone that simply does what it really is for making phone calls?
coz then you wont buy a new one, and everybody would have a the same old phone.
12MP? Big deal, I'm pretty sure that with the tiny image sensors inside these "phones" the images still can't even compete with a $100 point and shoot.
12 MP = 3 MP + "2x optical zoom"
Darren Murph++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Other than the benefits of being able to digitally zoom on the images more, there isn't much benefit at all to more megapixels on cameraphones. These are still shitty little sensors (on the vast majority of these phones, anyway), and packing more pixels on the same size sensor generally lowers the image quality, doesn't it?
Optical zoom is needed far more than megapixels. And they could fit a small optical zoom on these cameras if they wanted. The 3x zoom on many ultraportable digital cameras proves that. There would be a cost, and the overall phone would be a little more bulky, but they could do it. Come on, guys!
The optics on those ultraportables are bulkier then they look. The trick is that the whole rig is on its side... with the sensor sitting flat towards the bottom of the camera... and what looks like the lens is actually a reflective prism.
I know its tricky, and expensive. But someone needs to do it. Digital Zoom is just not going to cut it if they want to actually replace a casual point-and-shoot.
Doesn't 12mp on a camera phone seem kind of ridiculous? Carrying 2 devices is just to difficult now it seems.
Guys, 12 megapixels or 20 megapixels makes no difference when your POS lens is the size of a tic tac.
Joe Consumer won't realize that after he's been bamboozled by Joe Salesperson.
Give me 3 megapixels and a decent glass lens with a cover. Or, how about a cell phone cam that starts up and is ready to shoot in under 10 seconds? Decent low light performance?
I'd take any of those before asking for more pixels.
Unfortunately it's just easier to market a number like megapixels than it is actual quality.
I've still never seen a shot from 8 or 12mpixel phonecameras that can match my 2mpixel Canon P&S from 8 years ago.
I still don't see a reason for a phone having a camera of this high of quality for our time...
High quality? Phh. It's all about marketability.
Let's start a stop the megapixel race movement.
Who's with me ?
I'm with ya. Though it's more a matter of educating the general public.
What is wrong with that woman's cheek? Either she was attacked by a squad of hornets or just told Chris Brown he has an STD.
