Look, we'll level with you: we don't know exactly what we're looking at. After seeing that
Mac mini pic yesterday, we were about 140 percent sure it was a classic Photoshop disaster. Now we don't know what to think. One thing is for sure -- this isn't done with Photoshop. The above video was offered up by the original poster of the first pic to back up his or her claims of a "2009 Penryn" mini. Something feels fishy about this, but it's hard to write off the video as pure sleep-deprivation-induced fantasy. So what do you guys think? Crazy mod, new mini, shared hallucination? Fire back in comments!
[Thanks, Blake]
lol all those photoshop gurus were like "omggg its a diffinte photoshop pic..POORLY DONE TOO" lolllll
Only this time it's not Photoshop, it's 3D Studio Max!
Yeah you'll see those comments with every new Apple rumor that includes pictures.
Looks like some cheap tin of Holiday cookies turned upside down , slapped some Apple on it and put some connections in the back...
And what is with the soft core pron after the video ends? AHAHAHA!!!
You guys.. This could easily be a photoshop, haven't you heard of a little thing called stop motion and some nerds with too much time?
Its real, my dad has one, it has 4gb ram 2.4ghz duo and a 256 mb graphics , theres not much new really, my mac book pro is still better :D
did someone say they had a tin of cookies?
I don't know why anyone would claim it's fake - there's nothing crazy or new going on here. They added a couple USB ports; that's not at all beyond the realm of possibility. Either way, the update to the mini is nothing special and it's still a pretty meh machine.
I just don't know about this one. It seems to be really professionally done, if this is indeed a hoax (and if this is a hoax the guy/s responsible really need to get a life - judging from the amount of time spent on it).
It just doesn't seem to be in line with Apple's current generation of hardware when you see the gray apple logo on white. I also would have thought that they may try a sort of uni-body design with it. But, saying all that, it isn't like it looks that bad to be deserving of a makeover.
As for the ports - stands to reason that they would put in a similar configuration to the Macbook line. Nothing surprising there. I just wish they would put in an HDMI port for hooking it up to a HD TV. It would make it real appealing as an Apple TV replacement. :D
A definite fake, look at the miniDV port at the back... isn't apple touting it's new proprietary display port that comes with the new macbook/macbook pro/iMac?
If they're trying to make a standard (they are), this would seem inconsistent with the other stuff that they've been doing.
Verdict: It's someone's (very nicely done) mod, possibly even just a case...
@andy
If you care about apple enough to say they should get a life for doing something other than sitting on their ass and pontificating about apple, then you need to get a life.
still seems fake.
I have to agree, it looks fake. I would have preferred if he picked it up, showed the bottom... Booted the device... TURN ON A LIGHT IN THE ROOM!!! You know, the simple things... It still looks fake.
Of course, I am guessing based on a compressed video on the internet...
M
Oh I love that lunch box... What's in it? Apples or Apple pie?
lol..... it's a modded Mac Mini......is that so hard for people to understand......you CAN mod them
[sigh]
another stupid comment, this time, made by me, i should read the other comment( right below me lol) before i post....
I don't say its fake as there could be a Mac mini with Nvidia cards and MagSafe ports.. But the aluminum body does not seem good to me. Unless Apple is really planning to change the body from matt to glossy...
very mini except it isn't as mini as a Nano
Caught Mini Me is mini.

Breaking News, Really? Maybe on TUAW but come on, a rumor as breaking? Sigh... (mac user btw)
My feeling is this is a mod of the already existing mac mini. I think apple would update the look of it (all aluminum perhaps -- since they have that new manufacturing process they are so happy to boast about).
yeah i agree. the white top seems fishy. you would think they would go with a G5 look - and that doesnt seem to have it.
My feelings exactly Nino. Well put. I'm thinking when it does come out, it look sleeker. The white top seems so "Last-Gen" for Apple.
I think it will look more similar to the apple tv with a metal top.
http://www.apple.com/appletv/
The "all aluminum new manufacturing process they are so happy to boast about" is for making a unibody laptop enclosure that is super strong and rigid for durability while you drag your laptop all over the place.
Why would a little square box on your desktop need to be super rigid?
Chad:
The Mini needs to get WiFi and Bluetooth reception unlike the AppleTV. Currently the only way the Mini gets any radio reception at all is since it has plastic on top. If it were all metal on top, it would be useless for many things.
If it changed, I'd expect it to look more like a Time Capsule (which has a 3.5" HDD in it, BTW! get on the stick, Apple!).
why does the apple tv (link two comments above) have a metal top?
@why not the LS2LS7?
Apple tv has wifi and IR
How does IR play into this? It can't penetrate plastic or metal.
AppleTV has the same layout as the Mac Mini. Metal around the sides, plastic on top. So I guess it gets its WiFi through the top, like the Mini.
True that. Plus, they wouldn't use white but black for the things they need.
lol@ anyone thinking "IT CAN'T BE ALL ALUMINUM b/c it would interfere too much w/ wi-fi and bluetooth!!"
haven't you guys seen the new macbook yet? gtfo
The Mac Mini needs to have some plastic to pick up Bluetooth and WiFi signals. Although it's hard to see in the picture, the Apple TV has a PLASTIC top, with Aluminium around the edges. Given that this fits in well enough with the Airport and AppleTV line, I'd say it's not unlikely this is the real deal.
I have a Mac Mini. Trust me, if you put metal over the top, it'll get no reception. The antenna are right at the top, flush with the plastic.
The MacBooks have the antennas in the lid. The lid is plastic at the hinge and glass on the front.
I don't know about that. I have a Mac Pro and every square inch of that case is aluminum and I can still pickup a wireless signal. Covering the entire case in aluminum is possible but not the brightest if the user wants a strong WiFi signal.
@Bryan... Doesn't your Mac Pro have a little dongle that serves as the antenna? The G5 configuration came with two such tails to stick out the back panel.
@John
No dongle antenna with the Mac Pro. It's got a antenna that gets scotch tapes to the inner top of the case.
fourth biotch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHA you loser
The metal on the outside looks different to me... Fishy indeed.
also it looks beveled on the surface where the white plastic and the metal meets...?
@pete
yeah i agree - especially on the right side. the white i/o board joins the metal at a weird cut.
@ Chad,
Yeh sure, your right... why would apple change from the metal and white top surface meeting flat at 90 degrees to being beveled and change there iconic brushed metal?
The apple tv uses wifi and it has a metal top.
Well actually there is he plastic apple logo in the apple tv box that allows the antenna to work. But the mini is expected to be inexpensive and plastic is always cheaper than aluminum.
meh, why do they really have to change how it looks, the people that need it will buy it no matter what
its apple. looks matters...
Not of its under your desk...
Would you prefer an ugly looking girl under your desk, or a good looking girl under your desk?
The looks are changed for the simple reason that this is what people want. Car manufacturers update their models periodically with new looks (some more radical than others, mind) in order to generate demand so why would you not expect the same of computer manufacturers. This is hardly limited to Apple.
@Bob
Ugly girls try harder
more likely it depends... however unless the pretty girl is freak it doesn't really matter as long as she's skilled... after awhile with a few drinks here and there you can't even tell if she's cute or unattractive anymore.
so much for that photoshop job lol
dont think i have ever seen a Mac product with a "raised" power button. they are pretty much always flush with the form factor.
touche
Considering that the power button is on the back, I think it would be a good idea to make it slightly raised.
The power button in that pic is exactly same as the current Mini. In fact, the top half of the back is (security slot, vents, audio in and out plus power button).
Actually the iMac G5 power button was on the back and was raised.
They should have just made the entire white top one giant power button. And make it look like plastic, feel like plastic, but glass that was worked hard upon to "adjust the coefficient of friction to feel just right" and marketed as environmentally friendly.
That way, when you had a bad day at work or school, you can slap your computer and it will listen to you. But not only that, it will feel just right to the touch.
I would be disappointed if they kept a near identical form factor, while I don't see the point in making it smaller, a new brick style body that worked as a heat sink would be nice, and a black top with white apple logo.
I call fake, I hope....
The point of *not* making it smaller is so that we can still play CDs! What are you suggesting?
"while I don't see the point in making it smaller"
If you really need that explained then what i was saying was, I don't see the point of making it smaller.
Why on earth are you arguing with me I don't want it to be smaller either, READ the posts before replying.
boy, I hope they can keep the price low.
why didn't he power it up?
good question....
Because it wasn't plugged in?
The metal on the outside case looks a bit odd and not very 'brushed'...?
sorry about that im not really fourth. i had to confirm the comment and stuff so it ended up taking longer than i though. actually I'm
17th biotch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to crush you
man, home made cgi gets betters and better all the time...
Wait... I'm going to go out on a limb and see if I can beat everyone...
It's REAL.
The question everyone should be asking (other than the obvious why are we wasting so much of our lives worrying whether or not 'leaked' images of the least interesting member of a product line from an already overhyped computer company is real) is...
Wait. That IS the question everyone should be asking themselves. :)
You my friend are not a sheep.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Jeff Lewis, with the queeeeeeeeeeeestion of the Day!
Somewhere a Industrial Design student is laughing his ass off
Somewhere an English Teacher is laughing his ass off.
Thats what i thought too, Apple stuff may be 'stylish' and whatnot but to make a fake box like that would probably only take a few old scraps and an afternoon in the workshop to cut the metal, lazer some acrillic and add the scrap parts to the box
Whats with the Firewire 800 port aswell?
http://www.9to5mac.com/imac-12-usb-ports
Now that's funny.
Let's see a video of that!
while I'm not saying it is the case, just because he showed an aluminum box with some ports and an apple logo on it doesn't mean it was the legit mac mini.
I am sorry but this looks alot like a series of hard drives that were made to stack with the Mini.
With a logo put on the top which doesn't look like a real Apple top as staed before.
See here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
its funny how this clip comes out AFTER everyone states its a fake..
Why would the original poster dude even get hold of a prototype Apple product at all?!
If this is true then the jackals must be on their way to "put him to sleep" . . .
If not I doubt if Apple would even let God get away like this after exposing a firm prototype -.-
Because Apple would _never_ deliberately leak prototypes to gauge reactions and/or generate hype for an upcoming product, right?
Note that the machine is never lifted in the video, even where it would be more convenient than moving the camera around. The simplest conclusion is that the Mac Mini will run on a sinister new "dark processor" made with entangled quantum singularities in an antihawking virtual photon field, and therefore weighs a lot.
HAHA! Run little PS caller-outers! It's obviously the same person who did that vid, as it's the same wood floor... so he CAME BACK FOR REVENGEEE!!!
an suddenly, every mac user posting in this thread is a proficient Apple product QA/designer ....
That's what I was thinkin'
boot it, dumbass.
I've never understood why legit leaks always have the worst photos/proof. How hard would it be to plug it in and show the computer + about this mac on video. Sure, it's possible to fake, but a lot harder.
because they are 12 year old kids stealing their dads work secrets.
Well... it might be time to update my old mini... im gona have to say that looks really real
It feels that the timing is wrong. There is no upcoming announcement/release thingy and the Case has no major redesign that Apple would have to do to keep it alive.
140% legit MacMini
Wait... I think you've already posted this earlier today...
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/20/wall-charger-takes-one-ac-outlet-provides-juice-for-five-usb-de/
OMG A MAC MINI!!
seriously, who cares
Who the hell even cares about anything apple anyway? Yeah, no one. Other than those interested in paying a higher price for lower functionality. But who cares about them...
What do you care about this, and post about it, if you'll never get a Mac?
Fake
well, at least it doesnt have a glossy screen
www.who-the-fuck-cares.com
ps. It's fat! My cellphone is a lot slimmer!
Umm it has two display ports. This is possibly real or a prototype unit. But I have a hard time imaging a apple employee leeking photo and video unless they were instructed to.
But on the other hand some of the ILs have wood flooring.
I think it was leaked on purpose to build hype.
1. Shut down production of old model
2. Start Production on new model
2. Hype new product in development with amateurish photo and video leak
3. Release product and have it in the Apple store the day of release.
4. Huge Profit on a Cost effective mac in the slow economy.
I could see the new one having a black top and plastic to match the iMac.
Hardly cost effective. It doesn't come with a monitor, or keyboard and mouse. Let me break it down for you:
Apple Store (AU), Highest Configuration, including a Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, but no Monitor, total cost (in $AUD) $1 625. This configuration comes with the following:
2.0GHz Intel Core2Duo
2GB DDR2 RAM
160GB HDD
Wireless Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse.
If you include an Apple 20Inch Display, the price jumps to $2 423.
For just over a hundred dollars more, I can get a Top-of-the-range 20 Inch iMac, which comes with much double the ram, roughly 5 TIMES the storage space, a decent graphics card, Wireless mouse and keyboard, and faster processor. Not to mention that the system is roughly two years newer than the Mac Mini.
So when you actually think about it, the Mini is hardly Apple's cheapest computer, on paper it's cheap, but when you factor in the fact that it comes with absolutely nothing but the machine, it's less cost effective.
That's not even a real hand!
