Look, we'll level with you: we don't know exactly what we're looking at. After seeing that
Mac mini pic yesterday, we were about 140 percent sure it was a classic Photoshop disaster. Now we don't know what to think. One thing is for sure -- this isn't done with Photoshop. The above video was offered up by the original poster of the first pic to back up his or her claims of a "2009 Penryn" mini. Something feels fishy about this, but it's hard to write off the video as pure sleep-deprivation-induced fantasy. So what do you guys think? Crazy mod, new mini, shared hallucination? Fire back in comments!
[Thanks, Blake]
I betcha it's real
Just looks like it has no mass to it..meaning he's moving it without much effort. Doesn't seem like there is anything inside..cookie tin, maybe. Or just a gutted mini with new ports on the back..
given the new way apple treats its customers, they would never put 5 usb ports, and certainly not 2 different video output ports, especially since they came out with DisplayPort for the macbook pro...
apple in now a piece of fail to me.
show the bottom and show inside =)
It looks ... bald ..
i'm not buying that someone would have a unit when we haven't had even an announcement of an announcement at this point.
not to mention that modding a mini is possible, there's no displayport when Apple is all over right now etc.
and as someone else pointed out, it wasn't turned on. so for all we know someone took a dead mini, mod'd the box and posted it as a model of the new unit.
Hm, fake, obviously. It has more USB ports than the previous version. That would increase the production costs by 2 cents, Apple couldn't afford that.
I would like to note that he never shows the bottom of it. I admit though, I don't care whether it is real or not.
When is apple going to get off their ass and give us Core i7 machines and decent video cards? Also, why doesn't my printer work, it's been 3 years of promises for new drivers and I'm *still* using a windows machine to print with it!?!
@ Pokoleo
What miniDV port?? That is what apple calls mini displayPort. The other is mini-DVI. I don't know if it's real or fake but if you're going to say "Look at that miniDV port blah blah" at least be correct.
It's probably a very, very good fake, and I'd have to agree with others in that it looks 4 years out of date when compared to the latest range of MBP machines. But it could be an old prototype that never made it to market.
However, it's within the realms of possibility that Apple would be looking to release something like this, to sit alongside the Apple TV unit, seeing how they've sold a few of these now, and a machine the size of the Mac Mini would make for the perfect hidden server in a house that already has a laptop or two. Also that would explain the amount of connectors too, an extra USB port never hurts.
Could it be possible they could have made it so that HDMI is delivered over the Mini Display Port, whilst the Mini DVI does the regular monitor?
The fact that it appears to have a FW800 port and no 400 is intriguing. In fact the whole thing is intriguing.
I'm not sure if it's a fake or if it's a very clever mod or if it's the real deal and the Men In Black at Apple have their lawyers on speed-dial trying to work out who leaked it. So well done if it is a fake, I'm suckered in.
Apple appear to be one of the only companies in the world able to generate such speculative excitement over relatively nothing, which speaks more about their products than their marketing team.
What, no power up for us?
--Looks to be just a case mod...
if it's real, i've been waiting for one of these for over a year. i'll scoop it up to use as a media center to play my slingbox through my hdtv as well as boxee.
