Nintendo DSi gets its own video tour

What you get from playing Tetris
A new study published by the big thinkers at Mind Research Network has found that "practicing Tetris" can improve brain efficiency and lead to a thicker cortex.

FIRST!
Writing "first" in the comments section is like wearing a red wings jersey to a strip club. You obviously suck.
first to get a chewy by a portuguese penguin while blowing steve jobs and getting butt raped by arnold schwarzenegger at a california comic con convention in a winter snow storm while your mom masturbated to it all.
Calm down, Greg, you're just jealous you didn't get here first.
I am king of this post!
You're the king of saying one of the most moronic things on the internets. I was going to leave the comment section of this post alone until I saw the lob-ball you served up everyone's way.
Haha,
and think of the minutes of your life that you'll never get back! They're mine, all mine!
yes Jamesy. and think of all the females you'll never get for the rest of your life. they're mine. and everyone else's.
perish.
@skyblaze
You do realize that con is short for convention....
yes i realized that. its a typo. damn engadget won't let me edit my comments
Jamesy is awesome.
wow...what are they playing at?
Its funny...cuz after all those features the last thing they say is "portable gaming".
Perhaps they don't mention gaming very much because with nearly 100 MILLION DS units already sold worldwide (http://www.vgchartz.com/), the term DS is synonymous with portable gaming.
The European trailer is much better, and more informative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwjZyqJRgtM&eurl
What a joke. It would be like owning a wii; stashed in a closet somewhere covered in dust after you get bored taking low quality pictures of your friends and adding "effects"
Its still way too childish for my taste. They try to incorporate so much "adult" type stuff into a "kids" device, i just don't understand it.
what about GTA Chinatown Wars?
Lots of people playing Nintendo DS are adults. There are more adults playing DS than there are playing PSP which falls squarely into the teen/young adult demographic. Your perception of what is 'adult' is skewed.
"what about GTA Chinatown Wars?"
1 game doesn't make it a mature system
this looks wikid!!!! cant wait to get my hands on it
and
omg how can that dsi have a better camera than the iphone :P lol
i recon the next stage of the ds is the dsphone lol

I wanna see that wifi browser. That's the only reason I bought an iPod Touch.
its really slow and isnt worth it, its pretty much the same as when it was a bought cart
@Fila
indeed. firmware updates are the only thing that give it hope...
Have you used the DSi browser? It'd assume it's faster since it's not using any slow RAM that was on the GBA cart, and just using fast, internal RAM.
I've only ever seen kids with Nintendo DS, why the hell did they have to make a video with adults. Their laughter appeared so fake! They seemed to be from another world. Those guys would have looked much better debating political issues. Had they gone with real kids enjoying the DSi it would have turned out better.
Good thing, PSP doesn't have a touch screen which would have resulted in adding silly things (photo effects?) to a gaming device. Nintendo currently is good for kids only. They should launch an Adult version to justify using adults for this video. LOL
A few of my friends have them (22-24), I personally don't like the dual screens. I would much more prefer if the system was just a really thin resistive touch screen device with the buttons on each side (read: remove the top screen).
But, I only play harvest moon with an old SP once and a great while.
Nintendo doesn't care for just Little Johnny and Jane. They have captured (IMO, with evil genius) the non-gaming market and extended and marketed this device to them. Brain Training ads were similar in Australia and elsewhere; marketing the device to adults through the use of local and international celebrities. This advertisement is further evidence of that.
I think the ad is well-planned and will hit on so many levels for them they'll continue laughing as they their bank balance grows.
In short, Nintendo doesn't care for hard-core gamers, or at least they're not its main meal ticket. For good or bad, they are going where the money is.
I think they have done wonderful things making the DSi a far more social device. The PSP, god bless her, I love for its multimedia capabilities, widescreen awesomeness, fantastic sound, native movie playback, drag n drop interfacing with PC, etc. but Nintendo are really playing to their strengths here, I feel. The touchscreen is being used to good effect, so really it's a device quite unlike the others out there, despite being 'low-tech' in many areas.
All in all, I feel strong 'win' for Nin' with this product.
:)
They should have kids doing all that stuff.
I could understand why they are targeting adults. I know a few adults hogging their kids DS just to play games like Brain Age. Heck I was even considering purchasing one a year ago for Brain Age, before that other Not To Be Mentioned company came out with their App Store, with many similar Apps.
If the R4 works, I'm in for one.
You and me both.
Am I the only guy over 18 who still plays games on his DS?
I mean, it can't be just me!
'course, I don't play it in public
All the fancy videos can't deny that the screen on these things is 256 x 192
And the camera resolution 640x480
No you didn't just time travel into the past
Boy are those 100 Million ppl going to be surprised when they find out they've been enjoying sub-par tech.
A 100 million also enjoyed the c64, want to buy one? Only $150 just for you.
(Not to mention a 100 million voted for bush, and there are hundreds of million of religious people, and the shopping channels sold a 100 million of dodgy products, what's your point exactly?)
Ah, you're obviously a PS3 owner who bought it because of the tech-specs, and now only use it to watch movies because there are no games to play on it. When are you fanboy nerd kiddies going to learn? It's not the tech that makes a game system fun, it's the GAMES!!!!
Erm, we are talking about a portable device you know, perhaps you enervate both braincells? If you are going to make such remarks go for a comparison with the psp, but oops, the psp is a better device so that won't do.
I don't own any console though nor do I own a portable gaming device, but I can recognise BS and last year's technology and a screen of the resolution the nintendo dsi has just doesn't cut it in 2009, deal with it, there's only one fanboy here and he's recognisable by a fanatic determination to deny the simple facts.
I do see your point that games matter though, but there's no reason to not demand some basic 2000's stuff to go with the games, and the ad video doesn't even mention any games really, it's all about photo's and music, it is they who decided to put in 2 cameras but keep the screen low resolution, well then they should also accept they will get some scorn.
Last but not least I'd like to point out that I hate sony due to their practise of trying to install crap on my computer using sneaky ways.
I Would Like To Get This As My Original DS Lite Is Breaking, But The Only Reason I'm Holding Back Is Because I Really Like GH: On Tour And GH: Decades, And I Won't Be Able To Play It Without The GBA Slot, Bring Out A DSi With A GBA Slot And I Will Be All Over It.
Look I Can Capitalize Every Letter In A Sentence Too.
i-d-i-d-o-t-h.
Only a matter of time before Nintendo announces the DSPhone
Anyone else think the voice in the video is similar, if not the same as the voice in the ball in the cup ad's off Family Guy?
'New from nintendo, Ball in a cup...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoUly6OoS7M
I quite like this, looks really good. Kid or not, I play with the original DS. This is pretty damn cool. Liking what I see.
dude did they take out the gba slot T_T
WHHHYYYYYYYY !!!!!!!!
my pokemon games jus look so much cooler on bigger brighter screens rawwrrrr
Your DS Lite didn't go anywhere.
I'm still up for buying this one. Already pre-ordered it on amazon. Still gonna keep my DS Lite though, thing could be handy one day if i feel like playing DS games AND GBA games in one trip. And since the DSi has a camera, i can leave my camera at home.
Yes, but why male models?
There is no doubt that if you like the DS then this is a very nice upgrade to it.
I have had one since day one. I use it to play with my kid who also loves it.
Clearly we will continue to have a ton of fun with a pair of these.
Nintendo knows how to make a portable system. There is plenty of software and new features to keep the DS alive for years to come.
All that being said I still love my Apple Itouch. IMJHO it is the BEST TOY a person can own.
Yaesumofo
I don't understand why these companies insist on making all these devices do the same damn thing. How many hand held gadgets do we need that surf the web, take photos (crappy ones at that), play music, share music/photos and all the other junk nobody needs. Really? Seriously? Jeesh already. Please stop.
I want to play GAMES. Not browse the damn web on my game device. Our phones, hand held gaming systems, console systems, computers, tablets, netbooks, cars, pretty much everything does everything. When does it end? How about some standards you know? INFORMATION OVERLOAD!
No thanks.
If you want to play games with it, you still can, and nothing it has will detract from that, really. Use it or not. It's as simple as that.
My concern is when - while trying to be all things to everybody - a device loses its core competencies, or does what it does less usefully or with more mucking-about. I don't think Nintendo have crossed at in any way, shape or form here; ie. it still pretty much looks and feels like a DS, plays like a DS (I presume, having never felt it), doesn't make things more complicated, etc. Its focus on gaming hasn't been diluted, IMO.
At the same time if they released a device without major reasons for people to buy it, many would complain it's not worth the upgrade. I think they have done extremely well.
how odd. i wanted one until i saw that advertisement.
can't wait until they're out
"The next step in portable gaming"
And hardly a game mentioned. Right.
Im sure when I want to take a photo, have a chat, listen to music I will pass on my cameraphone / ipod touch and think DSi everytime
Their target demo in that video is way off, its just worrying.
sd cards are like 30$ for 16gb on amazon, doesn't seem like a terrible deal to me.
Well that was meant for dragod..
It looks like all of that functionality will be utilized just about as much as Pictochat is now...
-I don't need cameras
-I won't buy expensive SD cards
-No GBA Slot. This is a deal breaker for me. I never upgraded to the DS Lite because it wouldn't play GB/GBC carts.
-All of these extra features will no doubt kill battery life.
-The price is just too high.
Looks like the next Virtual Boy/GBA Micro to me.
I'll be sticking with my Mario Kart-Red DS Phat.
you know, im kinda turned off by the dsi now... i was wanting one, that ad is so wierd, all those features are cool.... for a few seconds when you get the thing home, hee hee i can mod my voice, then you think "thats gay" and never use it, like pictochat me and a freind who got ds phat on luanch used pictochat once! my phone has 2 megapixel camera and photos taken on it mostly turn out grainy and blurry and crapppy, imagine pics from this!, i have an ipod touch that is a better for browsing the web,. why do i need to another device that can do the same things at lower functionality? cant wait for sarcastic gamer to rip on this, its just begging for to be made fun of! as for the pic maniplation feautres they are coping that iphone app thats 4.99
gmcnewlook @ Feb 20th 2009 11:08PM
why do i need to another device that can do the same things at lower functionality?
-------
I think it's more a case of:
"why not have your gaming device (which it does dam well with great tactile controls and excellent functionality); why not let this device do some additional fun things with the touchscreen editing and sharing pics and sound, which cannot be done as easily or with as much fun as this device?"
if i could get a DSi like device thats for good for gaming, music and photos (with good resolutions) id buy it in a sec , it sucks having to carry your ipod touch, a ds, and a camera , and your cellphone,
Does anyone know yet, the capability to play mp3's? Audiobooks, browsing then games are what I want; even with a 32 gig card this is still cheaper than an iPod touch. I like my mac, but no expandable memory in the damn Touch is bizarre.
MP3's, browsing, & maybe games... what are some good choices for devices? (don't say netbook)
No MP3s on the DSi.
At all.
