ASUS Eee PC T91 sits down for photo shoot, early critique
Much like the S101, the T91 isn't exactly "Eee PC" material. Sure, it's small and ASUS-branded, but design wise, it's a pretty bold departure. bit-tech was able to sit down and take an early look at the Eee PC T91 convertible tablet, and while the machine is still a few months out from release, it seems that you can curb your enthusiasm in the meanwhile. Critics found the touchpad to be a hair less awesome than those on other Eee PCs, the lack of multitouch to be a real bummer and the uncanny ability of the LCD to attract fingerprints as just plain annoying. Of course, their unit was still subject to alterations, so the crew isn't completely giving up hope that things won't improve by launch day. In fact, it noted that the inclusion of a DVB-T tuner, WWAN support and GPS functionality were very nice touches, but it still maintained that a standard netbook would likely suit you best unless you're just head over heels for touching.

K Thnx Bye.
Except of course for the over saturation of the eee brand. But we still love you.
Over saturation of the brand ? You do realise Engadget shows EVERY model that Asus make for every market in the world.
Have you ever walked into a local shop and been confused by all the different EeePc models, NO
Its not about my confusion its about the market and simplifying the product line to make it easier for the average non engadget reading consumer to choose. They were going a la Nokia with the N95 making rehashes of the original EEE minus this or plus that instead of really innovating and distinguishing their products from all the clones. I'm not saying they are ALL like this but its definitely there. Now this I like except the original keyboard is better. I swear I will be buying this.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnd THERE goes any chance of me resisting a netbook. For most of my non-laptop usage scenarios (mobile web, movies, etc.) the tablet form factor just makes sense. If this come in at a sensible price, I may just have to get one.
hey thats something awesome now :)
DVB-T tuner on a convertible tablet ..... why?
You are kidding right?
Anyways that won't be of any use in the US of A.
Anybody know if this will be any good for taking handwritten notes?
No multitouch and Windows 7, no buy....
But they're getting there...
that would put it in cheap laptop territory in terms of price
like this but only months later?

I've been wanting to see the Gigabyte hit stores so I can actually try before I buy, but right now one has to go through Dynamism.
At least the ASUS will have a chance of being available retail in North America. :)
Problem with the current OS situation, Vista won't run (well) on it, 7 isn't ready yet (for mainstream, though it might be fun to try on this), and the only XP version still available for license is Home. This would need XP Tablet to use the touchscreen reasonably. Unless ASUS adds those features in their custom software that wasn't ready for review.
This may be ready for mainstream when Win7 does go gold, and ASUS may have a hit on their hands.
Though it needs higher resolution, IMO. It's only 1024x600; the HTC Touch Pro2 is 800x480 in its little 3.6" display. This is 8.9", so it could use at least 1280x800, which would allow 720p video. (It has a tuner available, after all...)
thedesolate1: XP Tablet has handwriting recognition. Home doesn't. ASUS can't use Tablet anymore, due to MS licensing that only allows Home. That's why their custom software is so important. Vista has much improved handwriting recognition over XP Tablet, but forget about running Vista on this. Win7 looks like it might work on it though. For now, it's gotta have third-party software for handwriting.
happy i just spent 350 on the eee 901. i like the 9 inch form factor.
im sure this will cost near or more then 500. i like the tablet form, but i doubt it will get 6+ hour battery.
if it blows the 900 outta the water, maybe ill upgrade, just had to snatch it up cause they arent making 9 inches no mo.
Spamming for engadget on engadget. Hmm... interesting.

I was going to buy this for sure, but the non user replaceable battery is giving me second thoughts. I guess I'll wait for the battery life tests to come out and make a judgement call then.
From my experience with Asus, the warranties only last a year. All the hardware in this sucker has power conservation in mind, paired with the six cell battery - it'll definately last that long. And after that, invest in a screwdriver. When the warranty ends, replace it yourself. I don't see what all the fuss about the battery is, unless you'd be carrying around another battery to switch out for extended use.
I had an 1000ha model, and it worked fantastic. I'm putting the T91 up for HEAVY consideration, the tablet form factor just makes sense for netbooks. Perfect for E-Books, Movies, and browsing the web, there's really nothing to complain about as far as I can tell. And also directed at the people complaining about the lack of a capacitative tablet, that's not what Asus was shooting for with this model. The touchscreen is meant for the convenience of use for all of the tasks the original EEE PC's were meant to do - not note taking and graphic composition. I'm not getting my hopes up on the Asus Touch software suite, it looks like they're going the wrong way with that. I'm probably either going to keep a clean install of xp home minus the suite, and install my own third party touch software, go Linux, or install the beta version of Windows 7 which runs surprisingly well.
If you're looking for a Wacom grade tablet in a low-priced netbook, you're not only looking in the wrong places, but you're expecting too much out of the market this early. The tablet-netbook craze has only just started. I'm a student and graphic artist myself, so don't think I'm just ruling out as useless. This machine, though, is about the same size as my Wacom Tablet, so the lack of capacitance really isn't that much of an inconvenience for me.
I'm actually more excited for this then I let on. Come on Asus! It's March! I don't care if you didn't give a definitive date, I want my T91!
Odd... every other review of preview of the T91 and T101 says the touchscreen is multitouch - they even demo the feature... which means either ASUS removed multitouch or bittech got it wrong - or Murph missed something.
That swivel hinge is not inspiring my confidence.
How else would you like a tablet to be hinged?
I just want this to be awesome because it's the best touchscreen option price-wise. And for now you could always throw on the windows 7 beta probably.
Again proof that the big companies do not understand the use of the convertible tablet pc. Time to look at HP and Lenovo for ideas of what it's intended use is. This convertible convertible tablet pc is a toy and not a product.
i like this, might be a good upgrade from my 2G surf!!
