Cowon gets official with D2+ PMP
Cowon's D2 portable media player never was much of a looker, and needless to say, neither is the replacement D2+. This somewhat bulky PMP sports a bezel that's remarkably thick, though it does boast a built-in DMB TV tuner, SD / SDHC / MMC expansion slot, FM radio, USB 2.0 connectivity and BBE+ sound enhancement. There's no apparent word on pricing, but we suspect Cowon will clear that up whenever this thing pops official in the North American market. A few more pics are waiting in the read link if you're still undecided on the design.

this sucks 100%
Going to justify that?
It'd be interesting to see what they've done to it. My D2's still going strong after 2 years but just adding BBE+ to it isn't going to sell more... The physical design is exactly the same, just painted differently. I saw "virtual click" in there somewhere, not entirely sure what that is, haptics?
Battery life looks to be rated the same as before judging by the 52, 10 and 9 on one of the pictures so there can't be much changed inside.
Lets just hope it's all flash interface this time around...(just the now playing screen is on the D2)
Oh and the size - I guess it's pretty thick compared to some, although it's very pocketable (ie, unless you have tight trousers you wont notice it). I have no complaints.
the D2 was a great all-around pmp and has gain major praises from critics, nevermind the fact that this one hasnt come out yet so you havent even touched it, please STFU.
Well we know now why they didn't include an SDHC card slot on the S9...
Too bad we'll never see it in the US.
Why not?
Cowon devices with DMB are never released in the USA. And besides DMB, there really aren't any differences between this and the D2. BBE+ is a software enhancement.
The D2 has DMB in the rest of the world that supports it; they just take it out for North America. I have a D2 and it's great, but black wouldn't really give me a reason to "upgrade."
You call this bulky? Have you ever even seen a D2? It's basically a screen with a just enough thickness to make it possible to have an SDHC slot and a headphone jack on the side. Go on and find me a PMP with the same functions this has for the size, I dare you. For those that are paying attention, that includes the 50+ hour battery life.
have you seen a recent ipod, sansa, sony, samsung, or creative player? this is about three times thicker than any of those.
D2's size was never the point. It was always a good, functional machine in a respectably small package - I don't know why the writer had to rant on the device's design shortcomings and not refer to its legendary reputation amongst DAP enthusiasts.
And they all have pathetic battery life and codec support compared to this.
I have to admit that I am a bit spoiled by the PMPs with the screen stretching to the edge. Probably not very scientific of me but if I was shopping right now I'd go for the biggest screen in the smallest package. Other than that the current specs between the major players out there seem awfully similar.
The prices in S. Korea are going to be
* COWON D2+ 4GB : 159,000 Won , about $ 115
* COWON D2+ 8GB : 199,000 Won , $ 145
* COWON D2+ 16GB : 249,000 Won , $ 180
* COWON D2+ DMB 2GB : 169,000 Won , $ 123
* COWON D2+ DMB 4GB : 199,000 Won , $ 145
* COWON D2+ DMB 8GB : 239,000 Won , $ 175
The D2 is the perfect gadget for me, it's as if cowon designed it especially for me. I'm really happy they release a successor though i can't see any major difference to the old one. Maybe they improved the interface.
Looks like it was ripped from the back of an airplane seat.
I have a D2 and let me tell you its by far the best portable music player I have ever owned, and I have allot. Most of the people who rip on the D2 don't own one and would not know a great sounding music device if it fell out of the sky and hit them on the head.
ITunes sucks.
Apple has good looking devices but the lack of flexibility being able to copy music to the Apple device is killing growth. I have an iPod and I gave it to a friend because I could not stand using iTunes to manage content.
I had a D2, I LOVED the thing, but I accidentally bricked it. I ended up selling it, buying a 5.5g 30gb ipod video. I hated iTunes, so installed Rockbox on it...problem solved, no iTunes :D drag-and-drop FTW!
Sarcasm? If not, the iPod does not have mic built in without the use of headphones,(trust me built in mic comes in handy for classroom lectures, and board meetings), nor does it have ogg, flac or divx support with Cowon's great sound quality, and not to mention the fact that I am pretty sure the battery can't last 52 hours like this. Oh let not forget the Touch is limited to 32gb of space while this is currently limited to about 48gb of space(16gb built in + 32gb sd card).
Hey jerk,
The iPHONE does have a built-in mic jackass.
Also, the iphone has about 24 hours battery, how often are you away from a charger longer than that?
AAC rules over all other file formats, I'd crucify ogg if I could, the iphone earphones have beautiful sound quality, deal with it!!!
Also, 16GB is enough space, noone seriously listens or watches 16GB of media between syncs.
You sir, are probably the biggest failing douche-bag on the internet, everyone point and laugh at this great ass.
Okay, I could accept that perhaps you're just ignorant, or maybe even just misinformed...
but when I read "iphone earphones have beautiful sound quality" I just couldn't contain my laughter.
Jamesy is either a troll or a complete an utter idiot, I was leaning towards utter idiot before reading "AAC rules over other file formats" but only an insane person could say something like that and the only other option is a troll...
But the iPod Touch does not, and most people who buy mp3 players aren't looking to pay $a lot/month and $200 for something that can't accept SD cards. Also, .flac is the "best" file format, since it's lossless. Oh whoops, the iPod can't play them without hacking it/installing a program. But the D2 can, and pretty much any other file format you throw at it.
The player reminds me of Darth Vader. Matte black and great sound quality is a WIN. Granted - Vaders helmet is shiny - but I'll just imprint that mental picture in the haters minds and leave it at that.
I didn't see this, but is the D2+ using an AMOLED similar to the S9, or a display like the O2 uses?
I think it's the same as before - 320x240 resistive touchscreen LCD, not AMOLED. If they've changed it, not sure.
Just confirmed it - 16M color 2.5" TFT LCD (320x240)
thanks
As I said, troll. Now it would be better for all your brain cells to simply move on and ignore him.
I love Apple Computers and have had many--currently use a MacBook as my main pc. But I love Cowon and it's unlikely I will ever buy an iPod. A lot of the BS that Windows users say about the Mac are actually true about the iPods IMHO. I love my D2. I only wish Cowon made a harddrive based player that was small.
My old D2s are dead. I was way too rough with them. I will definitely consider this over the S9 unless s9 price drops considerably by the time the D2+ comes out. What would be awesome if they changed out the screen of the D2+ with AMOLED and made it capacitive with a one tap touch instead the double tap. But then again i wonder how good the capacitive touch would be with such a small screen.
Use a PSP.
this does offer:
1) more pocketable size and
2) cheaper SDHC memory and
3) higher-mW headphone outputs (for higher impendance and/or less sensitive 'phones)
4) far better codec support
5) cheaper price
6) FM radio
But the PSP sounds great and offers removable battery in addition to removable flash storage (and personally I love its tactile controls), not to mention wide display, etc.
If only Sony would get off their butts on the audio (and to a lesser extent, video) codec support.

Hallo Sony?
And 50 or so hour battery life.
I like how that whole page including tons of text is made up of pictures just to make sure any translators don't work, it's enough to make you look for alternative companies.
Im thinking of getting the D2 for a car, can anyone recommend it or something else--im mostly interested in the sound quality for a car with 8 speakers (no subs).
My D2 is pretty good. Lasts a long time, has lots of features. Touch interface is a-ite.
yea well it would be good if they put enough space in this shit, the original is what like 4GB aint it, something like that, forgive me if im wrong, im not lookin it up right now. i want atleast 120, lol, but no its gonna be flash
This thing looks almost exactly like the iRiver P7 you said was "gorgeous" yesterday :P They're both ugly!
