Motorola Ruby (VE1) ditches weird spelling, not the RAZR look
We'll hand it to Moto here -- it truly is admirable that it didn't use all caps and no vowels to name a phone that's so strikingly similar to the original RAZR, but we can't help but doubt this thing's ability to sell. The Motorola Ruby (or VE1), will reportedly boast a 5 megapixel camera, a standard flip phone design and... well, that's about it. Or, at least that's all we know of. For those still agile enough to mouse to the read link after the massive facepalm you surely just initiated, there are a few more images down there for your perusal. "Enjoy."

noice
i like
and would like to see this as a free phone on at&t =]
+1 for using vowels agn.
Just thought I'd mention that the "A" in "R*A*ZR" actually *is* a vowel! I know, it's hard to remember all five (sometimes 6!). I kid I kid. :)
Motorola must be waiting for the most opportune time to release a new, attractive, feature full (and possibly capacitive touch screen) phone, even though that time seems to be now. Maybe they just can't move away from this whole slim flip phone that made them big bucks about 4 years ago. Who knows, but they seriously need to re-think what they try to sell.
For many people, this design is optimal. It has a lot of benefits over candy-bar or (ugh) "slider" phones:
1. It's thin.
2. The screen is protected from scratches.
3. The keyboard is protected against accidental dialing.
4. It's properly sized, so the mic is where it needs to be: AT YOUR MOUTH.
Where MOT keeps failing is the OS. Last I checked, their contact list didn't have ADDRESSES. WTF? If this thing has full contacts with addresses & categories, memos with categories, to-do lists with categories, and a working calendar...
Oh, it'll still fail. Why? Because there's no syncing software for it that works. Phone Tools = reprehensible garbage.
Too bad.
Even though I have been on a WinMo touchscreen for a couple of years now, I still miss the simplicity of flip open to answer and flip closed to hang up.
is this a joke Motorola ??
Did I just wake up in 2004?
Where did this phone come from? And Why?
Are these aimed for a target audience of the Elderly? Because that style is gettin' OLD!
Oh dear
It looks like a good redesign in my opinion. It looks like a razr had sex with a pearl and this is the child.
omg do you have the RBY yet?
no to be pedantic or anything, but the "A" in "RAZR" is in fact a vowel.
Everybody needs to shut up.
Everybody thinks that a thin flip phone is a RAZR copy.
This phone may have a "flip" style, but it definitely does not copy the RAZR.
The camera, keypad, and the lines are different.
Everybody stop hating Motorola.
This is better looking than those ugly looking LG flip phones that all look the same.
5 mega-pixels is pretty decent for that small camera.
I dig this phone.
Go Moto.
I agree wholeheartedly. I love Moto, and I hope that they stay in business. They make the best phones out there in terms of usability, form factor, and durability. There are no more reliable phones than Motos.
Nice looking phone. 5MP camera, too. I like that they've been putting an emphasis on better cameras lately.
Any word whether this will carry the UIQ 3 or will run something like S60?
And just as I expected, as soon as moto uncanceled it, people are complaining about it. Some people are never happy. I'd personally love a slim clamshell smartphone with a good 5mpix cam.
I'd take a Flip phone over a slider or a bar any day of the week. I miss Flip phones.
Wasn't this phone canceled?

I would definitely buy this phone. How is it like a razr? Just because of the keypad? Everything else is different
i like the design of the phone its time people stop hopping on phone trends a get a phone that suit there needs truth of the matter u only need a blackberry bold, palm pre, etc if u do real business not just to make u feel like u are somebody this phone will be geared toward youth anyway Go Moto!!!!!!!!
Why are YOU working so hard to save two characters? That doesn't make sense even on dial-up.
can't they just start releasing all those sick japanese flip phones over here
Looks like a sexy secondary phone.
If they get the OS right, then yes. They blew it once already with the MotoZINE ZN5.
Actually, that phone reminds me of the upcoming Motorola i9 Stature...only this one looks like they opted to add colors to it while the i9 is more or less black/dark grey.
The camera is impressive, but I think a better release will be that upcoming phone (I think it's the Inferno/Blaze) going to Verizon. If only it was coming to Sprint (better yet, Nextel) with WiMAX. Now that would be one SIC phone.
the razr, and any design is dead already, includin this phone
Looks like the camera moves with the top half -- pointing outward when closed and pointing at the user when opened. Maybe this has a video chat feature?
Why would this be Symbian? Moto have already said they wont be making any more Symbian phones.
I love how around here, MOTO + Flip in the same phone immediately is translated into "it's the EXACT SAME PHONE as was released 4-5 years ago."
If we apply this same retarded logic to other phones:
The iphone 3g looks just like the iphone 1.0, soit must not have any improvements
Every candybar nokia phone made for the last 10 years looks the same - they must be identical.
Yeesh.
@Information Central: You are by no means a good central source of information. My 2.5 year old 3G Motorola V3xx has address fields in the contacts. I think it even stores phone numbers.
I just want a phone the size of an ipod nano. I don't want it to take pictures or movies or games. Please just call and text.
Hello have one asks, comes Motorola VE1 "Ruby" announced in Cebit 2009???
Thanks
