MSI X-Slim X340 hands-on
Engadget Chinese managed to score some face time with MSI's new X-Slim X340 at a pre-CeBIT press event today, and we're seriously impressed -- just like the Atom-based X320, the X340 weighs just 2.8 pounds with a four-cell battery and 1366 x 768 13.4-inch screen, but it's got more horsepower with a ULV Penryn chip and GMA4500 graphics with HDMI out. Not bad, especially if this thing comes in under $1000 like we've heard -- we'll keep an eye out while you check out the rest of the pics in the gallery.

nice tattoo
lawl, corporate branding
But when they say "hands on", I guess they mean the laptop, not the tatoo...
she's pretty cute ;)
I wonder where else on her body they've "branded" her, if she's up for sale I'm dishing it all!

Man, you guys should totally come visit Taiwan sometime. In the meantime, start your barking.
OMG by visiting engadget china im gonna get a chance to live and work in the U.S.A!
It would be neat if i didnt already live here =/
Meanwhile, Zune guy discovers his soul mate.
What happened to the sophisticated tech models? She just looks skanky.
Is she wearing a towel???
Is it a bad thing that I noticed the tattoos on her arm and hand after 15 minutes?
Aww man, I love MSI. It just dawned on me but man MSI is fantastic!
looks great in black, glad there is more than just silver or white.
You guys are sellouts. They clearly lifted Apple's design and you conveniently forgot to mention it. It may be a good computer, Apple may have also be accused of plagiarism, but neither one negates the fact that this is nothing but a knock off.
apple tattoos their models?
"shut up, Sven"
right... I meant to say
...Apple may have also COMMITTED plagiarism, but...
And no, I was referring to the design of that computer. Do you disagree? Does it look very different from the Apple line in your mind? Do you think it's by accident?
One more thing -> If Apple never released the MacBook Air, this would have probably never existed. Apple shouldn't sue these people to stop it's production, but they should be paid royalties or something. ;)
Yep, apple created the ultraportable market entirely.
But this one appears to have a removable battery.
Gene, I've seen variations on that 'MacBook' design for years now. I'm not sure the Mac is the original either. Anything with that style hinge design and basic, unified body shape will resemble the MacBooks. Too close to tell if they are attempting to copy it or not.
Okay, I didnt look at the detail pics...thought you were talking about the MacBook in general, not the MBA.
I see what you mean now. But really, it's still kind of a basic design, and it's hard to accuse anybody of copying it.
Now both Apple and MSI make great cheese slicers.
Owen V:
No, of course not, and no, I didn't think that MSI was aiming to produce an exact clone. I'm sure that in some ways they improved on the design. Still, in my opinion, this is a derivative computer. Take a look at photos of both (with a dash of the new MacBooks thrown in) and let me know if you can't see my point.
Kamokazi:
No doubt, but I think MSI was aiming to lift from Apple, not whomever Apple stole their looks from. I also don't by your specs vs. aesthetics point, I think that Voodoo, Dell, and others have demonstrated this point. This is simply a lazy effort. It could be a result of a typical corporate strategic meeting. What seems popular, shows growth? Buy a dozen and try to make a similar product. Everybody does it to some extent. Ford, (and I'm sure others) reverse engineered Toyotas for ages to try to improve their own cars. I doubt that they stopped and Toyota may even have something from Ford, like a truck.
Well, it's clear to me that MSI is definitely following Apple's design lead here, but even if Apple filed a detailed design patent on the Air, this design is different. MSI should not be paying Apple anything. Now if they start shipping them with OS X preinstalled, maybe.
CraigJ: I agree with you, I was mostly kidding with my comment about royalties. I just don't think we should give them a pass for doing something so blatant. Public admonishment for this kind of stuff may be enough to change their minds about these practices, but I accept that it's highly unlikely.
I don't see how they're liable just because their hinge looks like the MBA. I'm not even sure Apple invented that, they may have just made that style of design popular.
I can't believe you guys are actually talking about the computer and not about the model! Whats wrong with you people?
if msi was copying it would basically amount to saying like in auto car styling "wow that hyundai looks like my beemer. hmmm that fusion sure looks like they copied my prelude or jetta..."
Some competition is always good for us, customers.
gene is a moron
@dkrift
You watch I'm on Setanta Sports/Special1 tv?
I really hope this thread doesn't turn into a "Pro This/Anti That/Who copies Who" shitstorm.
I hope you did yourself a favor and didn't return to read everyone's comments.
"Ya here that? It's the whispering sounds of the winds of shit. . . the shit winds are coming' " -Jim Lahey
Are you kidding? This is the Engadget comment section, what else would it be used for? :D
Does Apple do boob/wrist temp tattoos, too? I would like some of them please. Maybe i can FINALLY attract the right kinda guy!!! lol
=)
Wow, a girl on the internet? I'm only teasing. But if thats the kind of guy you're looking for just post your email address in a comment after an apple article and demand pictures. It shouldnt take you too long.
Unless of course you are a guy pretending to be a girl to make a joke, which lets face it is much more likely because.....
there are no females on the internet.I guess I wasn't just teasing the first time
What is this "fee-male" creature you speak of? I have never heard of such a beast.
There were computers in that picture?
WOW! Stunningly sleek and attractive.
...
The computers are nice too.
i want my hands on ....
oh never mind, u know what i want! u really want me to say it?
I wonder if she supports multi-touch! *guffaw*
We're all nerds... :P
Oh, man. I love MSi ..................... girl!
"X-Slim hands-on"
Sounds good to me.
I was hoping someone would make that joke :)
to all apple fanbois....would steve jobs look that get in such a outfit? i think not...point made
from my perspective no male would look that good in such a outfit, but that's how I roll. Your mileage may vary...
i wish those damn laptops would move out the way.
there is a fully-body shot of that girl in the second link I posted to the reply of the first comment.
I think the screen resolution and HDMI-out really make this thing work, especially if it goes for under a grand.
