USA #1 in broadband, time to start making bumperstickers!

Great news, Americans! Despite all the naysayers with their "evidence" otherwise -- pointing out that South Korea has more broadband connections than we do, or that in some countries speeds are better than they are here -- the United States has come out at the head of the class. And that's before the government rolls out the "broadband stimulus" bonanza. According to Leonard Waverman (the dean of the prestigious Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary), Americans are not only the most productive users of connectivity, but our government's use of IT is as good as it is anywhere. Additionally, writes Saul Hansell in the New York Times, 57 percent of people in the country now have access to broadband, 9 percent have dial-up Internet access, 9 percent log on at work or at a library but not at home, and some 25 percent don't use the Internet at all -- one of whom said, "what do you want the Internet for? It's a fad -- just like CB radio in the '70s."

USA FTW!!!!
lets just remember there are three kinds of lies
lies, damned lies, and statistics
and 90% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
WHEW!! i was soo worried!!
Now that we got *that* out the way, we can focus on our less priorative, silly things like jobs and healthcare! :P
i bet the unemployed are playing more Unreal and Quake!
Dont Trust any Statistic you haven't Faked yourself!
@IamYam
internet=jobs
and
being on the internet=less chance of getting hurt/sick
@7egend
I see what you did there!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, i think internet=technology
putting people out of work, in exchange for efficiency and outsourcing.. the ol' fashioned american way!
so then... if it's so evil, how did you manage to post in this forum?
FTA: "there are many ways to measure the bandwidth wealth of nations..."
In other words. By creating our own metrics, we can make it look like the US is #1 in broadband.
I get uncapped, unthrottled, 100M* FTTH for ~$70/mo. I was paying $60 for 5M cable in the US. I'd say Japan is better.
*I've observed 100M FTTH peak at ~ 52d/32u Mbps.
But everyone's still getting shafted by their ISP. That's gotta knock 'em down a few notches.
we get shafted less...look at canada, aussie land...even UK has it worse than the USA
We got really crap deals in Australia, average monthly quota for people is probably 1gb....
Worse thing is with a country so much bigger and far less populated than the U.S how are we going to ever get everyone connected to the internet. And if you just fix it up for the capital cities then you have fucktard opposition political parties bitching about ridiculous things and trying to damage the governments reputation like the present one always does, cementing our place in the feudal ages.
It's not too bad here in Canada, actually....but it can be quite variable, just like any country.
I used to have 7Mbps DSL, with 90GB/month for $40/month...now I have 22Mbps DSL with 130GB/month for $60/month...not too bad actually. I know it's not FIOS or anything, but even that is not available in all cities in the US.
@Dave - Australia is not bigger than the US. I'ts appx 65% the size.
Keep in mind though, that the 130GB/month cap makes it a 400 Kbit/s connection. Doesn't sound as cool as 22Mbit/s, doesn't it?
(You can Google for "130GB per month in megabits per second".)
My connection still sucks. I wasn't able to get DSL until August, and it's practically unusable for gaming. Oh, and TDS said "They don't support gaming". Bullshit.
That's all well 'n good ... But how many more people are in the USA?
What's your % Coverage, then we'll see who's boss ;)
RTFA
The post lists the percentages
and 300+ million and counting
and if it was based on the number of people using the internet, there is no way we could win as china has more people on the internet than the US has citizens
AMERICA... FUCK YEAH!!!! :fist:
Love the avatar!!
+1
broadband! FUCK YEAH!
HAHA I JUST saw that movie!!
They hired the same people that does statistical data for video game companies trying to beat Nintendo.
I sure the Japanese or somebody still top out in per capita terms
Not sure about broadband, but they have more robots per capita, and that ought to count for something.
We need a robot stimulus bill!
We must not allow a Robot gap!
I knew all those silly reports weren't reliable. Broad band this!
Its still slow.

USA! Now I'd like to see someone from Europe come back on here and tell us how they are so much more advanced than us, like they say about their phones constantly.
Oh my god, I am an American living in Norway and I cannot tell you HOW ANNOYING THAT IS. They claim their cellphone technology is 10 years ahead of the US but here in Norway it seems like one of the phones of choice is the iPhone. Where do they think that comes from? :|
China, says so on the back.
haha well my on hand Experience is that Eruopean Broadband is FASTER and Cheaper than the one in the USA...
I pay 20€ A month for 16Mbits ADSL + Phone Flatrate ... Can U beat that ??
actually yes. I pay $35; less than 20 pounds, for the same speed in Manhattan.
@Mike_NYC
dude, the euro is not a pound. 20 euro = $25
and what are you smokin: $35 doesn't get you phone, either
classic...that's EUR not GBP...making the $35 about $15 more. but i still say ammmeerrrricaaaaa fuuuuuuuuck yeeeeaaaa
PLEASE SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!

Denmark has a 99% coverage of broadband. The rest, 1%, will have it by 2010.

Danish links so you probably can't read it anyway.
It's okay nobody cared to click the links
JIp everyone in denmark /sweden/Norway has Broadband ... even our wireless broedband Coverage is at like 50 something % (talking 3G, EDGE is like 98%) ...
That's all good and well for the 20 some odd people who live there.
I heard that around 80% of the population in South Korea have connection to the internet at home, which is the highest rate in the world.
Yeah dial up,.hyundai ISP.
Doesn't this sound like, "Hey, we might've lost the game, but we showed the best fundamentals!"
