Video: Nintendo DSi browser dramatically outpaces the DS Lite

Good news for all you crazy kids waiting in eager anticipation for the Nintendo DSi's Stateside release. According to very scientistic benchmarks conducted by the folks over at N+, the up-and-coming handheld's Opera browser not only loads the New York Times website much faster than the DS Lite does, but it's clever enough to start with the text -- giving you something to read while you wait for pictures of the war torn Gaza Strip to materialize (and bum you out on an otherwise beautiful Monday afternoon). Unlike the DS Lite, Opera for the DSi is free, and it can be saved directly to the device's internal memory. No fuss, no muss -- right? But don't take our word for it, we've been kind enough to provide a video for your after the break.

We should go down to the quarry some time and throw things in it
Favorite line from the office
I think my favorite quote is:
"I saw you in the parking lot earlier, that's where I know you."
no, i argue the best one is:
“Nobody steals from Creed Bratton and gets away with it. The last person to do this disappeared. His name? ...Creed Bratton.”
That is very slick!
It won't gain popularity unless somebody from Hong Kong makes a homebrew chip for it.
There are already flash carts for the DSi that fully work.
thats because the DSi has twice the CPU speed and 4x more RAM than the DS/DSlite
:) yes I did my research
Yes, yes it does. Although technically Opera for the DS comes with a ~10MB RAM expansion in the GBA slot, and the DSi has 16MB total so the amount of RAM is similar, but I'm sure the bandwidth to the GBA slot is much worse than to the onboard RAM, which is probably why it's so much faster. It also probably has to do with the fact that the DS's wifi hardware sucks, even though it's 2Mbit cut down 802.11b, the maximum download speed I've seen from it is 20kbps, measured through homebrew web browsers. The DSi has (or at least seems to have) full 802.11g speeds so it should be able to actually use a broadband connection.
I'm beginning to think the wifi-G will push me into getting a DSi at some later point.
New York Times? Nobody reads that crap anymore.
NYtimes is the premier MSM source. That's not saying much for the MSM, sure, but NYTimes is by far the best. So yea, read by many millions
Wow... "scientistic" benchmarks....
MAN, i want my dsi now, now, right now.
this us awesome.... goodbye ds lite & hellooooooo DSi
What hypocrites. Right before the Wii is launched, they badmouth everyone else for having multi media features on their consoles and handhelds, saying thats not what gamers want. They even removed the planned DVD dongle from the Wii. Now, they go ahead and add all this, when the PSP has had it all from the start, and still outdoes the DSi in all of them. The DS may have better games, but Nintendo has a long way to go before it catches up in the multimedia realm.
That is very true....
but the thing is that they finally realise that they are competing with big companies such as multimedia king Sony and now even Apple with their "gaming" ipods and apps...
Actually Opera on the DSi likely spanks the PSP browser. On the Lite it's only real issue holding it back was speed. That appears to be solved, and the navigation and typing in Opera is superior.
dan, for starters the psp browser supports flash, see: http://www.psponme.com/list_psp.asp for some free DS quality flash based games that the PSP can run
B3astofthe3ast, the amount of critically acclaimed games are nearly equal on the two systems, see: http://www.metacritic.com/
"Actually Opera on the DSi likely spanks the PSP browser"
It doesn't. PSP's web browser is many MANY times better. Supports flash, javascript, saving files, TV out, etc. Orders of magnitude faster due to better wifi, more RAM, better processor.
DS's web browser was, and still is a joke.
So, cool to see them side by side, but I do wish gadget video makers would take some basic video taking classes. There is some serious glare off those screens. The screens are back lit, no need for direct lighting.

I couldn't have said it better if I were the love child of William Shakespeare and Thomas Jefferson.
As the love child of William Shakespeare and Thomas Jefferson, I feel compelled to say, "Ditto."
Sex predators are gonna be extremely happy.
++++
Nintendo was trying to catch that vital sex predator demograhic with an improved web browser. Kudos to your investigation skills.
I hope you're not going to suggest Faux News as the "fair and balanced" alternative in a completely non-political article.
DSi Witch Project.
"inflicts massive damage" lol
But does it support WPA? I'm not going to downgrade my wireless network just to use my NDS....
Yes can support WPA
http://www.betanews.com/article/Nintendo_DSi_comes_to_US_on_April_5/1234971873
omg i totally forgot about that!
thanks for the heads up!
it's just too bad that anything but the new stuff (online store, browsing, etc) won't and can't use WPA.
thanks for reposting the article and spreading the word.
I'll be posting more videos and what not per people's requests on N+
Sorry about not taking video lessons - but if you ever tried to show detail in a video using just the backlit screens, you get dark surroundings. the point is to prove it's both DS's and the speed the content was downloaded. I think I did alright. But whatever.

eh, that dude's a dick, dont worry about it.
however, what would be a much more interesting comparison would be to say an iphone browser and some opera mini action on a touch or something like that. I dont know a single person who uses the original ds's browser and that's even with flashcarts and stuff. but the new browser looks to be MUCH better than the old one.
cool video.
You just hit that guys weak point on his belly for massive damage!
Video's dead.
Ok - it's not dead, (although YouTube was saying "This Video is no longer available." You've got to click "HQ" to watch it. Which is odd.
Having seen the video, it's very cool. Almost makes me want to trade in my DS Lite... Almost.
Less battery life vs DS Lite. Do not want.
Only at full backlight, and Full Brightness is higher on the DSi than it is on the DS Lite
Interesting...
I have a Canon XSi dSLR, only makes sense for me to get a DSi now right?
Comments.
Why would seeing Gaza in its current state bum me out. You should really keep politics out of this as seeing that would actually make people happy in that terrorists will not be allowed to randomly shoot missiles into Israle for over 8 years and get away with it. No ther country would get away with doing that. As mentioned before stay with Tech and keep politics out of this.
define terrorists as I think you are using a surreal nonsensical definition if you don't think the Gaza is being terrorized
oh, and Balagan I think you brought a lot more politics onto engadget with your posting then Joseph did as all he did was show compassion
@required
I really don't give a rats *ss about your opinion. Until you live their and experience first hand you have nothin to say. If politics was not brought up my opinion would have never been added so I could care less if you think my comments are more political. :-)
"Opera for the DSi is free..."
--------
Or rather, it's included in the price. The thing will cost $100 more than the DS (ie. $299) when it hits Australia on April 2. Just a tad spendy, IMO.

Sweet! I love Opera! It's good to see it on more devices, and free this time :)
