Microsoft gets big support for Mobile Broadband enhancements in Windows 7
Just in case Microsoft hadn't locked down enough support for Windows Mobile at MWC last week, the company also managed to shake hands with a slew of PC makers in order to extend support for Mobile Broadband enhancements within Windows 7. It's still quite unclear what all this means, but we're guessing that the likes of Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Fujitsu will happily support WWAN modules from Huawei, Option, Qualcomm, Sierra Wireless and ZTE. The writeup also gives us reason to believe that WWAN connections will be more tightly integrated than before, possibly even showing up alongside potential WiFi hotspots when looking for a wireless connection. At any rate, we're all about getting a signal regardless of location, so we'll take this as a definite positive despite the glaring dearth of details.

Ew that jpg looks horrid. Please ensure all future posts feature PNG graphics.
Grammar nazis, now image-format nazis?
And with the thousands upon thousands of folks loading this new (larger) PNG image, who's going to pay for all the extra bandwidth needed? You? It's an image. It gets the job done; nice faceplant bossman.
LOL, "Please ensure"? Sir, yes sir! Any other requests? Maybe they're using too m4ny v0w3ls 4 your taste too?
awesome.
Nokia shipped 1m. 5800, THat's awesome!
Windows 7 makes me happy to be a Microsoft customer again. (cant wait)
Wow, Engadget has a lot of ads in Chrome...
And that is why [for the time being] Chrome = Fail
Until they get AdBlock+ I'm sticking with Firefox.
Im sure some day all those air waves will be considered pollution.
I think Engadget needs a new Windows 7 screenshot...
lol
I'm hoping this even furthers the netbook builds. Considering every decent notebook can either be pre-installed or aftermarket installed with WWAN cards, this can only be a good thing. Once Dell's Mini 12 gets the re-rollout with proper specs, this is something I'll really consider should it run Win7 with any decency.
I'm using Win7 on my Acer Aspire One at the moment and the WWAN seems to be already intergrated with wifi hot-spots, rather than using the dailer included with my modem a 1.3g connection shows in my system tray with Hotspots, dails and connects fine from there, unfortunatly doesn't show signal strength but it's an indication that wireless broadband might be one of win7's advantages over linux on netbooks.
I for one welcome our new massive Windows security hole.
Where's ma unicorn?
What happened to the unicorn?
I've been using my Dell 5720 VZW card in Windows 7 for a few months now and I have no complaints. It seems to run quicker (could be the OS itself giving me that illusion) and it solved a lockup issue I was having in XP. More power to Microsoft and any additional enhancement they can bring to those of us who take advantage of this wonderful accessory.
What version of the software are you using? I've tried 2.09, but it won't get past the install. 2.06 seems to work fine, though.
2.09.01.14 Build 023
I entered my service tag on support.dell.com and downloaded the Vista64 version of the Dell Mobile Broadband software (I'm running Win7 x64) and it installed first try, no problems. However we have issued a few machines (same model and build) running Win7 x32 and we cannot get any current version of the same software to install at ALL.
Win7 is pretty dam cool.
The best OS keeps getting better and better.
Nice. Windows 7 is shaping up to be truly something.
Hopefully they get this integrated well... I am so sick of using Verizon's POS "VZaccess manager".. Horrible software, just horrible...
This could convince me to finally shell out for a Verizon Broadband Access card
This is fantastic news for the decreasing mobile broadband sales here in the UK. Bring it on!
