Windows 3.1 running on Nokia N95 is both awesome and depressing
If these screenshots are to be believed, then an ironic hacker has successfully installed Windows 3.1 onto a Nokia N95 handset. Marchin-PRV used DOSBox to emulate the x86-class processor on the Symbian handset in order to install Microsoft's 1992 OS. Totally useless, yes... and totally badazz.
Update: 3.1 too old-school for you? How about a little emulated Windows 95 action?

maty @ Feb 24th 2009 4:38AM
Its still pretty neat all the same =].
Steve Ballmer once took a shot at selling Windows himself, one can only be grateful this buffoon isn't in charge of anyhting important. Oh, wait....

Joseph @ Feb 24th 2009 10:06AM
Should've called it the Nokia N3.1
Verlin Gradney @ Feb 24th 2009 12:03PM
Awesome. Now I can run AOL 2.0 and use some of those awesome progz to annoy the hell out of people in chatrooms.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII (BarCODE) @ Feb 25th 2009 11:27PM
I'd be more impressed if he could get it to run Crysis or at least Windows XP.
Justin F @ Feb 24th 2009 3:37AM
Oh my god. Now THAT is the best thing since sliced bread.
Mike Cerm @ Feb 24th 2009 3:43AM
It's a shame the N95 doesn't have a VGA display. Windows 3.1 would look a lot nicer on there if it did.
whiskey @ Feb 25th 2009 9:59AM
Can you imagine? Portable "The Incredible Toon Machine"!
shah.noori @ Feb 24th 2009 3:45AM
I don't like it, because it can't cut a cake.
Macbook Air can do that :)
Chaos Theory @ Feb 24th 2009 3:50AM
and that's about the most use I'd get out of one.
DundunDuuuuun @ Feb 24th 2009 9:32AM
But can it burn a CD? No. Well, there you have it.
wat up!!! @ Feb 24th 2009 3:45AM
Lets try n put windows 7 on that thing now that we got simulating a processor to work right!!! =D, that be jus so much nicer!!! =D
Fruition @ Feb 24th 2009 3:57AM
I kinda miss the old Windows logo.
Javanese @ Feb 24th 2009 4:00AM
Ol' skool yo!!
On the other hand, I think N95 is powerful enough to run win95/98.
H0rK @ Feb 24th 2009 4:14AM
no it isnt, because it is EMULATING an x86 cpu. emulation takes a lot of cpu cycles. if the n96 was hardware x86 compatible the battery life would be 1 hour and it would need a fan to cool it off.
Mikie @ Feb 24th 2009 4:44AM
The N96 battery barely lasts one hour without x86 compatibility.
Dafrety @ Feb 24th 2009 4:17AM
A while ago I found a CD with Win3.1 software on it, I was surprised to see it still worked on my XP machine.
BenJI @ Feb 24th 2009 4:20AM
but i wouldn be surprised if Vista works on ur windows 95 machine
j_g_puff @ Feb 24th 2009 4:54AM
I'm surprised you found a CD with it on! I found my old copy on a set of floppy disks. Couldn't load them up though -- I haven't put a FDD in any of my computers since about 1998.
Joseph @ Feb 24th 2009 10:08AM
That is why it is soo slow. legacy support like that needed to be left behind. Ever stripped your XP down and removed the fluff? It run a lot quicker.
Tommo @ Feb 24th 2009 4:29AM
Geez those ironic hackers what will they get up to next?
Jay @ Feb 24th 2009 4:35AM
Something ironic, thats for sure.
I Like Aura @ Feb 24th 2009 4:35AM
Not a big deal!, Already emulated w dosbox on motorola e6!!!
▀█▀ █ ▀█▀ ▄█▀ @ Feb 24th 2009 4:35AM
This isn't really a big feat since it's only running in an emulator. Every device that can run any sort of x86 emulator can do this. Using PocketDos for example you can "run" Windows 3.1 on any WindowsCE / Windows Mobile device.
AMiSH PiRATE @ Feb 24th 2009 9:19AM
Dude! I totally just ran Commander Keen Episode 4 on my iMac! Through DOS!!!
Hackettman @ Feb 24th 2009 4:44AM
Thats very impressive really...... As much as I dislike the iphone Mac did a great job in bringing a mostly functional 10.4 os onto it with the added capability of being a phone.....
The only use Id have of this is playing Jazz Jackrabbit...... Which Im pretty sure I can get for my winmo phone anyway.....
Sarig @ Feb 24th 2009 6:48AM
Yeah, you sure can use all those OSX programs on an iPhone...
Surur @ Feb 24th 2009 8:49AM
I did not know OSX could not cut and paste and lacked a file system.
You learn something new every day...
NLI @ Feb 24th 2009 4:58AM
I wish I could find a windows 3 skin for my XP machine :)
Mike @ Feb 24th 2009 5:14AM
It's all well and good 'till it starts getting UAE's (Unrecoverable Application Error).
DundunDuuuuun @ Feb 24th 2009 9:32AM
Does that mean I can finally play Ski Free!?
weg @ Feb 24th 2009 5:32AM
How were they able to obtain a valid license? It's not sold anymore!!!
Joseph @ Feb 24th 2009 10:09AM
Why is this so highly ranked? You can get all kinds of "crap" and I use the term loosely, no pun intended, no need to link to the best page in the universe, i did that to upset you.
...as I was saying, on ebay or craigs list.
Shad @ Feb 24th 2009 4:44PM
Precisely, MS isn't gonna bother with legal action on such an old and useless product.
thedesolate1 @ Feb 24th 2009 6:31AM
Is there anything this 2 year old device cant do?
Oh yeah.. it cant play crysis. But maybe the N105 will?
Matthew @ Feb 24th 2009 6:46AM
it's win 3.1 so it is totally useless. How is this badass? why not just install DOS, would that be more badass?
Level 5 @ Feb 24th 2009 7:09AM
DOSBox? For serious? Where's the gratuitous "ZOMG IT RUNS DOOM!" demo? ;)
G @ Feb 24th 2009 12:11PM
There is a Symbian version of Doom that doesn't require a DOS emulator ;)
Al @ Feb 24th 2009 1:29PM
They got Quake 3 ported as well
Marcus @ Feb 24th 2009 7:09AM
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?
Level 5 @ Feb 24th 2009 7:12AM
MBA is also a LAPTOP, Smartypants McGee; the N95 is a PDA. Any laptop would have a considerable amount of capability over a damn phone. Go make your Apple fapfapfaps somewhere else.
Newone @ Feb 24th 2009 7:45AM
Think nokia gives a phone emulator for pcs with the symbian development package, so i could emulate phone emulating pc running windows.
I wonder if the phone emulator could run the phone emulator running a phone emulator....
Ricardo @ Feb 24th 2009 8:09AM
Wow, and it has been only around 2 years since we could install Windows 3.1 on a Motorola A1200 phone. Those Symbian guys are fast.
Nathan @ Feb 24th 2009 8:23AM
It's nice to see MS Paint hasn't changed much in the last 17 years.
cromas @ Feb 24th 2009 2:20PM
Are you kidding? Paint in 3.1 is FAR SUPERIOR to the versions after.
Davis4ever @ Feb 24th 2009 8:35AM
Come on Guys. The only screencaps that show the OS actually booted and working have some gold rimmed edge to them. Then the only pics with a N95 in them just show DOS. Tis weak at best.
Aule @ Feb 24th 2009 7:00PM
I think it is Marcin-PRV not Marchin-PRV, because he's from Poland and Marcin is one of Polish first names( and it's Marcin-PRV on osnews)
Atanas Boev @ Feb 24th 2009 9:26AM
But is not first working windows on a Nokia phone. I had Win31 running on a Communicator 9110 (486 compatible CPU).
Joseph @ Feb 24th 2009 10:10AM
But will it play _____(insert obsolete game from the past)_____
