Windows 3.1 running on Nokia N95 is both awesome and depressing
If these screenshots are to be believed, then an ironic hacker has successfully installed Windows 3.1 onto a Nokia N95 handset. Marchin-PRV used DOSBox to emulate the x86-class processor on the Symbian handset in order to install Microsoft's 1992 OS. Totally useless, yes... and totally badazz.
Update: 3.1 too old-school for you? How about a little emulated Windows 95 action?

Should've run Windows 95
Its still pretty neat all the same =].
Steve Ballmer once took a shot at selling Windows himself, one can only be grateful this buffoon isn't in charge of anyhting important. Oh, wait....

nuh uhh.
Should've called it the Nokia N3.1
Awesome. Now I can run AOL 2.0 and use some of those awesome progz to annoy the hell out of people in chatrooms.
I'd be more impressed if he could get it to run Crysis or at least Windows XP.
Oh my god. Now THAT is the best thing since sliced bread.
It's a shame the N95 doesn't have a VGA display. Windows 3.1 would look a lot nicer on there if it did.
Can you imagine? Portable "The Incredible Toon Machine"!
I don't like it, because it can't cut a cake.
Macbook Air can do that :)
and that's about the most use I'd get out of one.
But can it burn a CD? No. Well, there you have it.
Lets try n put windows 7 on that thing now that we got simulating a processor to work right!!! =D, that be jus so much nicer!!! =D
I kinda miss the old Windows logo.
Ol' skool yo!!
On the other hand, I think N95 is powerful enough to run win95/98.
no it isnt, because it is EMULATING an x86 cpu. emulation takes a lot of cpu cycles. if the n96 was hardware x86 compatible the battery life would be 1 hour and it would need a fan to cool it off.
The N96 battery barely lasts one hour without x86 compatibility.
A while ago I found a CD with Win3.1 software on it, I was surprised to see it still worked on my XP machine.
but i wouldn be surprised if Vista works on ur windows 95 machine
I'm surprised you found a CD with it on! I found my old copy on a set of floppy disks. Couldn't load them up though -- I haven't put a FDD in any of my computers since about 1998.
That is why it is soo slow. legacy support like that needed to be left behind. Ever stripped your XP down and removed the fluff? It run a lot quicker.
Geez those ironic hackers what will they get up to next?
Something ironic, thats for sure.
Not a big deal!, Already emulated w dosbox on motorola e6!!!
This isn't really a big feat since it's only running in an emulator. Every device that can run any sort of x86 emulator can do this. Using PocketDos for example you can "run" Windows 3.1 on any WindowsCE / Windows Mobile device.
Dude! I totally just ran Commander Keen Episode 4 on my iMac! Through DOS!!!
Thats very impressive really...... As much as I dislike the iphone Mac did a great job in bringing a mostly functional 10.4 os onto it with the added capability of being a phone.....
The only use Id have of this is playing Jazz Jackrabbit...... Which Im pretty sure I can get for my winmo phone anyway.....
Yeah, you sure can use all those OSX programs on an iPhone...
I did not know OSX could not cut and paste and lacked a file system.
You learn something new every day...
I wish I could find a windows 3 skin for my XP machine :)
It's all well and good 'till it starts getting UAE's (Unrecoverable Application Error).
Does that mean I can finally play Ski Free!?
How were they able to obtain a valid license? It's not sold anymore!!!
Why is this so highly ranked? You can get all kinds of "crap" and I use the term loosely, no pun intended, no need to link to the best page in the universe, i did that to upset you.
...as I was saying, on ebay or craigs list.
Precisely, MS isn't gonna bother with legal action on such an old and useless product.
Is there anything this 2 year old device cant do?
Oh yeah.. it cant play crysis. But maybe the N105 will?
it's win 3.1 so it is totally useless. How is this badass? why not just install DOS, would that be more badass?
DOSBox? For serious? Where's the gratuitous "ZOMG IT RUNS DOOM!" demo? ;)
There is a Symbian version of Doom that doesn't require a DOS emulator ;)
They got Quake 3 ported as well
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?
MBA is also a LAPTOP, Smartypants McGee; the N95 is a PDA. Any laptop would have a considerable amount of capability over a damn phone. Go make your Apple fapfapfaps somewhere else.
Think nokia gives a phone emulator for pcs with the symbian development package, so i could emulate phone emulating pc running windows.
I wonder if the phone emulator could run the phone emulator running a phone emulator....
Wow, and it has been only around 2 years since we could install Windows 3.1 on a Motorola A1200 phone. Those Symbian guys are fast.
It's nice to see MS Paint hasn't changed much in the last 17 years.
Are you kidding? Paint in 3.1 is FAR SUPERIOR to the versions after.
Come on Guys. The only screencaps that show the OS actually booted and working have some gold rimmed edge to them. Then the only pics with a N95 in them just show DOS. Tis weak at best.
I think it is Marcin-PRV not Marchin-PRV, because he's from Poland and Marcin is one of Polish first names( and it's Marcin-PRV on osnews)
But is not first working windows on a Nokia phone. I had Win31 running on a Communicator 9110 (486 compatible CPU).
But will it play _____(insert obsolete game from the past)_____
Endorfun!
I'm disappointed they used regular Windows 3.1 when everyone know Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is the 16 bit version of Windows of choice.
DOSBox is sweet, I use it for especially for X-Com & Wing Commander
A lot of work resulting in something "totally useless". This guy is a prime candidate for a government grant.
Nice? yes, Useful? sadly... no
Wow, i can't imagine how slow this must run :D
I tried the game Keen1 (anybody remember it?) in DOSBox on my N95 and it just barely works.
I dunno I have seen the XDA guys get Windows 98 and even XP(one of the lighter versions) to work on their device one way or another, so I would think 95 would be at least easy to run on this.
Now THAT'S a netbook
Aw... I used to have a simple, low-RAM shell that made Win 3.11 every bit as user friendly as Windows 95. Those were the days. A fast, simple computer that ran well on 16Mb's of RAM and a 486 processor. Of course, I still ended up doing most of my REAL work in DOS.
He definitely deserves a cookie for that. I don't see why this is depressing, Win3.1 reminds me of good ole days....middle school.
my first computer ever was windows 3.1
man do i miss those days :-(
it's depressing to me because i thoroughly miss the 90's it was the glory years....
snes, genesis, SDTV, rabbit ears, windows 3.1/95/98, playstation, THE ARCADE REVOLUTION (probably the one singular thing i miss the most), oh man and the internet and webpages that were still 16-bit, system 7(!!), the beginnings of consumer level linux, real MTV, the list goes on.
there's so many good things about the nineties, i mean clinton was our president (80% of it) can anyone think of real bad things of the nineties??
I would settle for being able to play Myst on my Vista machine.
But why? The S60 look is way better and has more features. Kinda pointless
This guy is a rip off..
