Canon's new PowerShot D10 is rugged, bulbous, and waterproof

Well, we dug up some hands-on pics of that new waterproof Canon PowerShot D10 we've been hearing about recently. Obviously, since it's aimed at the "sport" set it has to be available in "camouflage," and since it's waterproof it has to be sort of bulky. As for the stats, this guy rocks a 12.1-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 processor, 3x zoom, image stabilization, and a 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II display that's said to be twice as bright as the company's standard LCD II. In addition, the camera is waterproof up to 10 meters, shock resistant, and the display sits behind a 2mm shield -- if you should happen to drop this off the roof of an evil genuis's high-tech lair (or into a pitcher of beer), no worries. Going for about $329, available at the end of April. Hit the read link for the pics.

Soo... this is basically an Olympus Stylus SW / Tough series with a whole lot of ugly thrown in?
Exactly. And about 2x the price too.
The Olympus Stylus SW can't go as deep, or be dropped as high as this new Canon. Also the image stabilization on the Olympus is digital unlike the Canon. That's why it's more expensive, it's simply better all around (albeit still very ugly)
Actually the new Tough-8000 can go just as deep and has sensor shift and digital IS.
The difference is, if you drop this on the group in dense foliage, you might not be able to find it again.
For once, they have made a rugged device that is not in a yellow finish with black rubber scheme.
Soo... this is basically an Olympus Stylus SW / Tough series, without the absurd movie limitation, without the need to use the stupid xD card, without the really bad IQ, without the really slow response times, etc. etc. I've owned a Stylus SW, it was too expensive for what it could do (and couldn't), and I can still feel the pain.
You know this stuff can go both ways. And looks are in the eye of the beholder, I think this looks about as nice/ugly as the Olympus digicams. The fact that it's got a camouflage scheme should indicate that it's got other interesting color schemes, something that should appeal to quite a few people.
2nd!
Looks more like a new kind of Claymore!
nice
personally, i like the way it looks.
$550? Another Engadget's euro direct conversion? Amazon has this for $329, which is presumably the MSRP.
That looks pretty cool if I ever ventured beyond the confines of my parents basement I would pick one up and have a play. Maybe like....on...a jungle safari.
Looks like it should HOLD water too.
The tactical camera.
Point and shoot!
Maybe it floats and that's why it has to be that big...
I took my dad's olympus sw on a tubing trick and I just tied a float to it so it wouldn't be lost forever if I dropped it. The olympus is an awesome little camera and took several trips down the river like a champ, this thing is huge and ugly, though the bright LCD might be nice for outdoor shooting.
wow, really? did they really have to make it so that if you fall on it (i'm thinking snowboarding here) it will rupture internal organs? i'm giving it the benefit of the doubt and assuming it will take much better pictures than the olympus waterproof cams, but i'd actually prefer the lower quality with more pocketable shape than this thing that would only fit comfortably in a backpack.
I'll reserve judgments till i see some underwater shots taken with it. def something I'd be interested in for my next trip to Hawaii if the underwater shots are decent.
i dont get it. all i see in the picture is a hand with a silver thingy and a lens. where the hell is the camera ?
*rimshot*
Canon USA has it for $329 and available in May - http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=2590&modelid=18332
I'd buy it if it had a better optical zoom
They need to work on the lens and sensor sizes of all these small cameras. I am looking for something that will work better than a cell phone camera.
I don't understand why all of the "outdoor" products have to be in camo? If I drop my camera I want it freaking neon orange or something. Camo is good for hiding from deer, not my flashlight and camera.
Bioshock.
That color scheme will be just perfect if you drop it in the wild and try to look for it...
I hate how Point and Shoot cameras don't include the RAW format any more. It's not like people don't want to play with some serious editing of even there point and shoot cameras. Can't bring your dSLR with you everywhere.
I was under the impression that most panasonics still do. My FZ18 does, and I believe it's replacement (FZ28) does as well.
Many of the Canon P&S cameras have a addon to their software that allows for writing to RAW.

This camera looks to be perfect for people like my parents who break every camera they've ever had, whether its from dropping it, or getting it wet, whatever, they just can't seem to take care of things.
If only it had the 720p video capabilities of the other new Canon models it might be perfect.
I like the camera and have just recommended it to a nonprofit organization that I assist:
They will be using it on river and ocean outings with kids, hence it needs to be durable, waterproof, and usable.
They also ask:
"We would like a camera that can be submerged (33 feet) and send a constant stream or either video or stills across the internet"
Originally, I was thinking of enclosing a specialty video camera that is tethered to the surface. This a very costly approach.
Does anyone know of a solution or product that is out there today?
Thanks!
These so-called "waterproof" digicams are not designed for constant submersion, and 33 feet (10 meters) is about their limit. The fact that you also need a constant feed also rules them out. You'll need specialty cameras/camcorders for this.
I think it looks pretty cool, ignoring the stupid camo scheme. Prefer my A710is with waterproof housing though :-P
I like it. The shiny Canon logo kinda defeats the purpose of the camo though.
I only see the blue color D10 on Amazon and Canon's Web site. Where is the camo version, and are other colors available too?
Bulbous = proven concept:

Looks like a disposable digicam by Fisher Price and sold at Toys'R'Us... Canon? Really? No, CANON, REALLY!? Is this what you released in 2009?
Olympii have the same drop and depth rating, and look like regular cameras (sw830,850, TOUGH ... many many versions with similar specs and better looks)
Panasonic is coming out with an underwater camera (that looks awesome for an outdoor camera) and has better specs (waterproof, HD video recording, better zoom range)
I cannot begin to describe the repulsiveness I feel toward this product... It's ugly beyond words... How are you going to put this in a pocket? looks like it's 2 inches deep...
10 meters is worthless...
Is this another Canon marketeer's lie? This is NOT 12 megapixel camera! It might have 12mp sensor, but with that lens it will never make a 12 megapixel photo. Having this unnecessary ridiculous sensor makes pictures noisy and grainy in low light situations.
Canon engineers design wonderful products but Canon marketing thinks that we are dumb brainless morons.
Blah blah blah
Because improvements in sensor and lens design are obviously impossible...obviously!
Digic 4 is out???
Ooh! Rugged, bulbous, and waterproof, just like my big toe! and they both take pictures!
Well, It is quite possible the shape lends itself to floating. Which is very useful when snorkeling and running across animals like Eels and sharks and barracuda. ALSO, Hopefully large enough to be used as a weapon and strong enough to not break it. I can see it's usefulness for me most surely. Though, my counterparts tend to carried knifes strapped to them I've always felt I could scare something aware with a regular camera and one of those clunky water housings without lots of blood. I'm not sure about this. But, underwater housings are clunky and hard to change up from close up to regular or from picture to video. So, I am looking forward to this new gadget and wish it well.
won't de-throne the Pentax for waterproof photography. Fail.
Love the shape, not only for looks but strength (squares / rectangles are weaker). It is more bulky, though.
We'll see if Canon's famous lens errors are absent in this model :)
