Windows 7 shipping this Fall... according to Compal, anyway
While Steve Ballmer himself declared that Windows Mobile 7 would be coming out next year, we've got a somewhat less reliable source suggesting that the desktop version of Win7 will be landing this fall. Ray Chen, president of Taipei-based Compal Electronics, was quoted as saying that "according to current planning," Windows 7 should be on its machines by "late September or early October." For those unaware, Compal is responsible for crafting HP and Acer laptops, and honestly, we're not exactly sure how this bigwig secured these dates. Of course, it stands to reason that everyone else in the industry is either 1) clueless or 2) just better at keeping secrets. For what it's worth, we're taking this with a huge spoon of salt, and just between us, you should probably do the same.

where's the unicorn?
They were too busy putting two clocks (plus taskbar clock) on there, and embedding that engadget watermark......
I can see the unicorn, I think you are not on the engadget VIP list anymore.
So the Final version should be on Torrents by Mid-August, right?
Good.
"They were too busy putting two clocks (plus taskbar clock) on there, and embedding that engadget watermark......"
by the way, I'm the creator of the non-microsoft clock in this screenshot (the alarm clock)

glad to see that some people still use it despite the fact that microsoft blocked many developper accounts (including mine) with no reason last year on windows live gallery
Yeaaaaaah Boooooooooooooy!!!!!!1
Yet another MS OS not worth wasting $200+ bucks on..........................................
kinda funny that people are willing drop that much money on some software but wouldn't even think about it when it comes to there Operating system that is highly more advanced that any software out there.
mmm... I think you are not following the news here on engadget enough. Vista was +/- a bag of hurt, Win 7 is worth the upgrade.

*sob* my gadgets won't work and I don't know why. Why do you have to be so cruel?
WHY? Engadget, WHY?
its because you turned off the UAC. Had the same issue, there's a registy fix:

It worked.Thanks!
In physics class, the teacher got a new betta fish. I installed windows 7 after my XP partition magically failed on me. Mac OS X, and Windows, are both great OSes, I use both. From knowledge I had on hand, I realized the jar it was in was rather small. After 2 botched attempts, due to my idiocy, I finally got it installed. I also use Linux on my server box I am still configuring at the moment. I refrained from confronting on the issue, but instead I would give my unused fish tank to the physics classroom, with no conflict but rather complement. Windows 7 is faster on my relatively low specced Macbook 2.16ghz C2D with 1gb RAM. I feel being multi-OS is great, I get the benefits of all systems, and If I don't like it, I just restart the ol' computer. It was also a rather sheepism, when the teacher asked for a name, 4 people simultaneous shouted "Fred" and variant of said name. I still love Windows 7, and I hope to pirate it, I am a highschooler with no job, piracy is great. My next machine will be me building a 2.93ghz dual core with 8gb RAM, a 9800gtx+ 1gb, and will have 2 320gb RAID disks. The betta is yellow colored, and hopefully will thrive in my 9 gallon fish tank. Windows 7, while glitchy a bit, is a workhorse I really enjoy, and I like it better than XP. No one uses Solaris for desktops, but I will stick to Windows, Linux, and OS X.
You installed 7 on a fish?
Can we get a translator in here?

@Haikibutsu
what the fuck are you talking about?
tl;dn
*throws into the "circular file"*
Hey, Haikibutsu-san, lets go Izakaya some day!!
So wait, you're a high schooler with no job and you're gonna build this bad ass rig and instead of shelling out another $200 to get it the legit way, you'd much rather pirate it. WTF is this world coming to? Here's a plan, why not know back a few GB of RAM and dump the 2 320gb HDs and get a 500gb for half the price of both and legitimately buy Windows 7, trust me, you're not notice a difference in performance with the lesser memory. Geez, people use some common sense.
Yes, those of us with jobs love putting up with all the DRM and other bologna because of little "jobless" pirates like yourself.
"highschooler with no job, piracy is great"
"2.93ghz dual core with 8gb RAM, a 9800gtx+ 1gb, and will have 2 320gb RAID disks"
if you can afford that, you have the money... pay like the rest of us.
Certainly enough for an OEM copy. 8GB of RAM? I guess you could use all of it to run other OSs in VM with 2GB+ dedicated to each but if you're just going to use one OS at a time...what are you using 8GB for?
I'm sorry. I just couldn't Vote it Down. This just had to be reported...
What the hell is this guy talking about?? How the hell did he mix a narrative about fish with his opinions on operating systems? Perhaps worse is the fact that most of you ignored the fact that his comment was totally schizophrenic and instead focused on software piracy.. WTF
@ Setnev

Conversely, if he does buy those few GB of RAM along with the 2 320gb HDDs, and then illegally downloads Windows 7, he won't notice a difference in performance with the pirated OS.
He'll just have more storage space, more RAM, and the same OS.
This post is genius and hysterical. It is sad that the dissolution of our senses of humor have caused us to take everything so literally and not enjoy the subtleties of such a good post. It was an obvious satire. You people disappoint me.
Possibly the most interesting comment I've seen all day. Took me a couple of reads to get it all.
(Although I'm all against piracy, I'll let you off since you held two trains of thought simultaneously = ) )
No one seems to realize that this is three separate stories with each sentence alternating from one to another. Here's the "translation":

-Cocaine is one helluva drug.
Why would I drag my feet on somebody's couch, I mean I think I'd have a little more sense then that.
As someone who's had their rug pissed on, I empathize with a ruined couch.
I'm Rick James bitch, enjoy yourself!
So in essence what you're saying is fuck my couch?
Yippiiieee!
I hope this is Vastly improved over Vista....My laptops still Run XP and the Desktop with XP gets used more than the 1 wit Vista.
Vista eats up Waaaayyyy to much
Well I got sad news. :)
While you believe that XP is light... (more like Windows going "Quick OMG this using only has 16GB of RAM, quick put EVERYTHING on the HDD instead!" behavior, because it was designed to run with 128MB of RAM, and not 2 or more GB. Vista and Windows 7, doesn't do this crap, that is why it eats more RAM. Windows 7 has the ability to adjust it's behavior on the amound og RAM you have better than Vista, and this why it run smoothly with 1 GB of RAM, and not 2.5-3 GB from Vista. RAM is way faster that the fastest SSD drive you can install on your PC, even if you have DDR1. This is why Vista/Win7 is more responsive than XP.
Also, you forget that Vista and Win7 has the hole kernel on the RAM, which even further increase the speed and response time of the OS.
Also, you have Superfetch. What is SuperFetch? Well if you minded to read legit articles or a book or even JUST Microsoft webpage, you would know that it looks at what you run, for how much time and when, and pre-loads the memory for you, so that applications starts up 2, 3, even 6 (and more) faster. "OMG M$ KNOWS WHAT I RUN!!!!!" No, they don't. It looks at memory word and addresses (so bunch of binary numbers) constituted of program dll, libraries and alike data. So, even if it did grab a name (which does not), it would get stuff like "data.dll", and name a like... really not helpful to know anything from you. Also, the space for Superfetch is not reserved. If you does not need so much it will diminish over time, also it has direct communication with the kernel of Windows, meaning if you need the RAM, it will immediately give it to you, so the space is not reversed in any way.
If you took time to use Vista 64-bit (more polished than the 32-bit version), you would NEVER touch XP again, unless you run on a slow computer or a system with old technologist which was drop in Vista and in Win7.
I can spend all day talking about Vista, and what you are missing due to your lack of knowledge as you only read comments from ignorant people, Mac fanboys, Apple TV ads, and Linuc fanboys. You should be ashamed to be a sheep and not question this strange event. Do you really think that Microsoft will release crap after spending billions of dollars on a OS, working on it from scratch for 6 years. Sure it HAD bugs, because they restarted from scratch.... but these bugs are fixed.
And it's not like you precious XP is any good. I remind you it was a mockery compared to Windows 2000. It was called a repackage Win2000 with broken memory management system. It was said everywhere to have an abysmal memory management. Vista introduce something that was desperately needed... a good memory management.
If you took a computer 101 class, you would know that your RAM is useless if it's not used. You get some to USE IT.
So PLEASE, do not criticize what you don't know. If you want to criticize Vista, go ahead, I'll be glad to join you... but be sure you know what are you talking about, else I'll come back with critics of my own on you.
@Good_Bytes:
Thank you for this. This is exactly what I tell people when they bash Vista for "using too much RAM".
I have Vista Business 64-bit on a system with 4GB of DDR2 RAM and it flies. I'm never going back to XP.
Round of applause. I hope you feel intelligent cuz u know all the little intricacies of Windows. Im not talking windows Business or Premium...Im talking Basic. And my PC was purchased when vista was first released.
Colleges still use XP and werent quick to jump and use it. Nor was Vista Compatable with a whole lot of Any programs until recently.
Im not reading comments from any fanboys and ive never owned any Apple Products....and in your case...i guess it is hard to Spell Linux Correctly. They tell you about that in your "Computer classes" that you apparently sat in the front row of.
@Miguel: If you're going to criticise people for people for typos (and be intentionally ignorant and call them spelling mistakes) you better make damn sure that your post is perfect.
@Good_Bytes:
I agree with you. People are trying to compare Apples to Oranges.
I have been running Win 7 on an AMD 9500 Quad-Core Processor 2.20 GHz with 2 gigs of Corsair ram. The Win7 OS is smooth as silk. No problems or hiccups in work flow, but just a few BSOD which is expected with a Beta release.
No complaints here and I look forward to buying the retail version when it comes out.
A question for the smart people: Do the betas expire when it comes out? Because I'm basking in the free-beta warmth and really hope not...
Yes, the beta does expire. In July I believe. Although there are way to continue running Windows for free. Not that I'm saying you should do that...
The beta expires in August
Ah, thanks. Well, good luck to those T*cough*P*cough*B guys... at least 'till July...
The current beta will expire Aug 1st. Most likely there will be a new beta or release canidate before that expiration date (since the final won't be released by then). Then that beta will expire eventually and then the final will hopefully be released. Once they expire they will not work anymore.
Poor little fishie.
Can I buy a new one then, mum?
Windows 7 is shaping up to be a really nice OS. Honestly, I think it is good enough to win me over from OS X, as it has been my primary OS at home since the beta was officially released. No crashes, and pretty much everything is working on my HP notebook.
The only real issue I have experienced is that Google Chrome doesn't work. Win 7 actually told me when I tried to open it that it may have problems, and it does.
Infuriatingly, in Firefox, after typing an address, pressing enter does not navigate to the page, I have to click on the little "go" icon. Not sure what the issue is there, but should be easily fixed by Mozilla.
I could totally see a Fall release date, to me it seems pretty solid. In 4 years of Mac usage, I never had one kernel panic, and I expect as much on any OS. So far, Windows 7 has failed to BSOD, but to be fair, neither did Vista for the short time I used it on the HP.
Apple, your overpriced hardware (especially notebooks) has finally driven me away. I love your OS, but your prices are ridiculous, MS has shown me a viable OS that I don't mind using, and on much cheaper hardware. It's been fun, and hey, we still have the iPhone right? *cough* for now *cough* Palm Pre *cough*
I almost believed you were unbiased.
Huh? I'm not trying to be biased, what do you mean? I really do own a Mac (actually 2 at the moment, 3 purchased total). I really like the OS, though I think that Tiger was just as good as Leopard, my older Mac still runs great with Tiger.
But I finally wanted a notebook, and the least expensive 15" Mac notebook is $2000. Yes, they look great with the aluminum and glass, but I'm more interested in the specs and OS. If Apple made a 15" MacBook (not pro, same specs as the 13") for around $1000, I'd have bought it.
When I bought the HP, I thought that Vista wasn't all that bad - it's ok, but Windows 7 is, in my mind, good. Maybe it's the similarity of the new taskbar to the dock on OS X, the increased speed, or I don't know what.
So, biased? Last year, I never read Engadget, I stuck to TUAW. I'm ashamed to admit that I was a fanboy. I told everyone to buy a Mac, blah blah blah, the usual spiel, Steve Jobs was god, everything. But Windows 7 has opened my eyes. I still think OS X is a great OS, but I can no longer accept the price premium on the hardware.
cough 'cough' cough 'cough' cough
@Nathan
The thought on here from certain people is that if you have been turned away from Apple by something else then you were never really into Apple.
Its ridiculous - I see no bias in his post at all - just someone who is objective and see computing for what it is, cost and performance (not design).
peace out!
@ Poke
If you don't know the answer to my question then just say you don't know.
As you've seen from stalking my posts, no one is responding to the question yet, so I keep asking. And btw, I'm choosing to ask people instead of researching the info on my own. What business is that of yours?
chrome works fine for me
on an aside- is there some like list of who makes what for who ? eg Compal ->HP and Acer
If it's not made by Compal, then it's probably made by Qanta.
diggin the zune in the taskbar
Uh, I don't see anywhere in the article the year - maybe he meant September/October 2010.
Nope, that would be 2009. I have been working on getting a quote for about 1000 laptops in the fall and Lenovo and HP have both indicated that Windows 7 would be available on the machines then. This is good because XP would no longer be available and we did not really want to have to deal with Vista on just one generation of machines and/or have to upgrade them to Windows 7 when it was released under the upgrade rights of the machines that are rumored to start up in July.
But seriously, what technological innovations/enhancements is W7 bringing?
and no, I don't mean support for touch screen stuff, I mean the real beef.
An OS is supposed to be a stable platform for you to run your software.
So... your software is where you want technological innovations/enhancements... unless you plan an looking at your desktop wallpaper all day.
@Fox
Do you have nothin else to post? I suggest you go and do some research rather than ask this inane question over and over again across different blog posts.
Dont make yourself appear to be mindless.
peace out!
actually, I number of people (e.g. check out http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/) have been predicting that Windows 7 will be RTMed by about June and, as usual with MS OSes, be widely available a couple of months later. MS is obviously very reluctant to publicly annouce this after all the Vista release schedule fuck-ups but they have already decided to skip Beta 2 and go straight to RC
So the beta is expiring in August and we won't get the real OS until October-ish? That sucks...I plan on buying it immediately when it's released.
Hey! My suggestion for a new Win 7 screenshot must have worked. haha
I heard it from a Microsoft Salesperson that Windows 7 is also coming out before the years end.
Cant wait to get my Windows 7 home super machiatto low fat soy expresso edition...whoooohoooo...
But....what will I do for the 1-2 months between when the beta self-destructs and final release? ;_;
Either reinstall Vista or pirate XP so I have something that will alow me to sync my Zune and go back to Linux mostly full-time I guess
Unless someone manages to find a workaround for the self-destruct
Steve Balmer has already said that Windows 7 will arrive in 2010.. pfft.
