Windows 7 to get 2,000 bug fixes pointed out by testers
Microsoft has been a bit lax in communicating with beta testers of its Windows 7 operating system who have reported problems or bugs to the company -- according to some of the testers, anyway. Well, apparently they've been really busy! Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president for the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group at Microsoft, has just directly addressed the issue of bugs in a blog post, noting some pretty astounding figures. First, he says that over 2,000 bugs will be fixed in the release version of Win 7 because of feedback from the over 10 million downloaders of the beta OS, which ended on February 10th. Sinofsky says that at peak times in January, Microsoft was receiving one feedback report every fifteen seconds for a week straight, and has, to date, gotten over 500,000 of them. He assures testers that the company reads and considers every email and comment received. Hit the read links to find his entire post, as well as an update detailing of some of the fixes that are on the way!

Looks like MS is finally getting their shit together.
Heck yeah, with 10 million downloads (uses) only 2000 made it to the bug fix list, that's pretty impressive.
Though I do wonder how they identify these bugs from 500,000 of feedbacks...
Different groups, organized.... it's kind of simple.
@Tom
Lots and lots of people reading them and categorizing them and determining which ones have already been identified. It's gotta be painstaking.
Tom is so witty..... Put 'em DOWN TomTom!
That's good maybe they'll get it right this time before the initial release. But there will be bugs regardless. Its just the nature of the beast sort of speak.
Tom,
Did you stop to think before you post?
I bet lots of the reported bugs from different users were the same ones.
Not everyone who downloaded 7 found a bug, and a lot of "reports" are for things where the user is wrong and just doesn't understand what they're supposed to do; UI problems, but not bugs. Plus, it's safe to say there was a massive amount of duplication.
Any reason you guys are using 4:3 screenshots? Looks fugly but I guess that the passive agreesive shit we've come to expect.
They still haven't fixed that annoying bug that breaks the Classic Start Menu option.
I cant imagine 2000 people bitching and moaning!
Classic start menu is for pussies.
How long before you stop complaining about the classic Start menu Andir? It's gone. Get over it and familiarise yourself with the new way of working. You'll soon see the benefits of the new Start menu if you give it a proper chance.
I love how apple has it's own area for content, but engadget still posts way too much apple stuff on the main blog anyways.
"2,000 bugs will be fixed in the release version of Win 7"
so beta doesn't get the fixes?
I would be one hell of a windows update. lol. (Microsoft please post information on bug fixes, please.)
Microsoft > Apple
Microsoft >>>>>>>>>>>>> Apple.
Apple = Overhyped, overpriced, underperforming piece of crap.
Please guys, just stop it!
I know that Apple sucks, but no need to state it under a non-Apple article.
You catch my drift?
lololol can't we all just get along?
How come that doesn't make you guys fanboy's and you don't get voted down?
at spyyder:
because we are pc's and we run shyt:P
Because when you go over to TUAW and there is an article about Microsoft and as a Windows user, you post in the comments that we should all get along - those apple fan bois down rank you. Even when you don't hate. I remember when I was over at TUAW and there was an article about Apple/Microsoft - every single comment was Microsoft sucks, MS a**holes, Windows sucks etc etc. As a Windows user I posted and said they don't need to hate, each OS is different and we all have our preferences. Needless to say, I was down ranked to oblivion.
.......Windows users are just nicer people clearly.
Seriously... what do you expect on The Unofficial Apple Weblog? That's the same as expecting a bunch of Apple lovers hanging out on MS blogs. Get real.
I like Apple because they produce great software. I now like Microsoft because they're producing great, competitive software. But to be fair, I mainly like Apple (and others) because they put pressure on Microsoft to compete. If not, we'd be lucky to see Vista SP1 out, let alone any word of a new version.
Competition = good for consumers... so shut up and let them compete for me.
Ha ha ha! You guys can't refrain from mentioning Apple no matter what the topic! I think you all secretly love them, you eagerly await the next post, any post, where you can mention Apple. Sure you try to belittle them, be negative - but the fact is, you are more interested in news or information about Apple than any other company. Just look at the amount of comments an Apple post gets. Just look at how many comments on non Apple related post - that are about Apple.
Apple are a more innovative, forward thinking company, where as Microsoft is all about profits - that is pretty plain to see. Apple has changed things, where as Microsoft has only imitated. Almost every one of Microsoft's successes has been something that has already been done. Windows. Office. Explorer. And when they do have an idea of their own (Bob anyone? That was awesome, wasn't it?) it shows their true colors. Gates & Balmer dismissed and talked down the iPod when it came out. They said it promotes piracy, blah blah blah, insinuated it would fail.
Now we have the Zune...
Someone else penetrates the market with good software or ideas, and Microsoft use their market share to incorporate their lesser version & kill the original, as you cheer them on. I would hate to see what Windows would be if the Mac had never existed.
Microsoft is to computers is what Wal Mart is to retail or what McDonalds is to restaurants.
How about you idiots stop stereotyping everyone, not to mention how juvenile it is to bicker back and forth about a god damn computer! There are much more important uses of time in this world...
In before "omg m$ sucksss they have to fix so many bugs WHAT A BUNCH OF MEAN JERKS"
I bet half of those could have been useful features.
Microsoft, take your time and keep listening to the users.
Can't launch date come any faster? I'm so freaking excited. :)
A bit contradictory, eh?
A bit excited.
A bit excited? or "so freaking excited. :) ?"
Okay, you got me. I'm SO FREAKING EXCITED. :D
You mean super excited.
Super duper excited?
Only 2,000 problems found so far? I'm already liking Windows 7 more than Vista.
Uh no, that was 2000 issues that would be addressed. No clue on how many issues are being left unaddressed...
I'm not sure why you're all low ranking timmah. I've been told that a couple of bugs won't be dealt with and I'm sure there are a lot more that are considered to be of less importance.
That is excellent news. I have been submitting feedback any time something doesn't work properly and it seems others have been as well. The huge size of this beta will contribute to a much more stable final product.
The main strength of Windows is how it will run on whatever brand of hardware you can get it to run on. That is also its biggest weakness because you don't get console-like stability of a small hardware set a-la Apple. For those of us who prefer choice and power over simplicity and slickness, a large beta group like this is probably the best way to test as many possible configurations as they can.
Good on ya Microsoft. Now do me a favor and extend some of this love to the mobile space.
V
Well, "V" to you too!
How dare you, Swimatm!!
Uh, did I do something wrong?
Has anyone else had problems with the OS when coming out of sleep on a desktop. The default power setting had my computer sleeping after 30 minutes and when I woke it up, the mouse would no longer work, and would require a hard restart. I've since changed the settings so the computer stays powered up all the time. I reported it, but I wanted to know if this is limited to me or not.
Chances are you are not the only one.
The critical part of investigating the issues is also not just software related. Based upon your computer setup, it could contribute it a piece a hardware too.
Yep! Sent feedback on it, too! I hope it gets fixed. When my mouse DID decide to work, it said something along the lines of "USB Device Not Recognized" but a few seconds later worked as it should.
I've had plenty of issues with my USB mouse.
The biggest has been the fact that it (the mouse) will not be recognized if I plug in any unsupported USB device as well.
I've experienced the same "Dead mouse" after sleep - and here's my current solution - put the computer to sleep and then wake it up again. It seems like every second time it wakes up it recognizes my USB devices.
Not perfect - but sleep is so dang quick that it adds less than 10 seconds to my routine.
Try it out and post if it works for you.
I was running windows 7 on an ancient computer that came preloaded with winme, it never came out of sleep mode correctly until windows 7
I have problems with display resolution when mine wakes from sleep. I have a 1280x800 display, and sometimes, when I wake up my computer from sleep, it changes to a 4:3 aspect ratio. After I enter in my password though, my desktop is the normal 1280x800
Anyone else with this problem?
