Apple iMac murdered, reborn as all-in-one DreamCast mod
This may look like a beloved iMac, but make no mistake, it's just a shell of its former self. CGCC forum member Logicdustbin decided to gut the all-in-one and replace its innards with a Sega Dreamcast and 15-inch LCD monitor. The result? The iCast, a beautiful homage to simpler times. Hit up the video after the break to see this Fronk-en-shteen in action, playing a game that'll assuredly prepare our children for a post-apocalyptic world.

heh, the DC cd rom per usual, as loud as it can be to disrupt gaming.
ugh. mine's buried in the entertainment center so i dont have to deal with the noise.
SEGA doeeeeeees What NintenDONT
where do you put the disk?
Your butt.
Sorry! Couldn't resist!!
you know this from first hand experience? is that why you can't fart?
we can rebuild him. we can make him better. faster. stronger.
Freiza? First thing that came to my mind anyways lol.
Yes, but that's probably because you're 12.
*Runs away in slow motion*
I think they pulled it off better than Apple did :/
Finally some worthy games on a mac!
(sorry, could not resist)
I used to play that 'Nanosaur' game on that iMac thing all the time :) It crashed EVERY time.
nice.
I loved that game
used to play it all the time in elementary school
Haha, well played, BoC. I'd be more impressed with the mod if he had kept the original screen, but it is still cool.
Power Pete!

power pete FTW!
Considering the rumors of a sega / apple joint venture called the dreamcast 2 I think this is a fitting tribute to such a great but overlooked console!
canon spike!! another spin off of street fighter...
capcom always did two things right: STREET FIGHTER and MEGAMAN!!!
oh and the mod is pretty cool too...
Really, they had to remove the screen the put a new one in?
Would be more impressive if they got the origional screen working with it.
I doubt it'd be a matter of splicing a VGA cable, you'd have to open up the radiation shields and risk zapping yourself on the CRT tube.
That is absoloutley sweet, I'd love to be able to buy one of those. Used to love the old dreamcast, not least because it was the host platform for Shenmue I and II. I'm still pretty proud that I have a PAL copy of Shenmue II for the dreamcast, those things are going at £50 a pop on ebay. (Not that I'd ever sell mine)
Does anyone else think that the title screen looks like the LOST (tv show) screen they show for commercials for it on abc>?
oops, forgot pic

eh actually maybe not
Considering how crappy Mac OS 9 was it´s nice to see one of those old boxes do something useful for a change.
My wife's iMac is running OS X, and she still uses it every day for all her standard tasks.
And I'm sorry, but will Engadget ever get bored with the whole "put components from one thing into another thing and call it a mod" fad?
Up next: An Odyssey2 with Atari 2600 VCS guts put into it! How original!
Yep I'm running tiger on my 600Mhz G3 iMac with 768MB of ram. Runs quite well as a bedroom web station and MP3 jukebox.
Freaks out at most Xvid/MP4 videos though.
"...playing a game that'll assuredly prepare our children for a post-apocalyptic world."
I see what you did there. Somebody reads The Onion.
Hmm. The opening shot of the street and truck looks like No Mercy 1 in L4D
Cool!! How much??, so... Where's put the disc??
Finally, a Mac that plays games :P! But seriously, beloved iMac? A machine with a G3 processor and a really shitty DDR controller that only takes very specifically timed RAM is beloved? It couldn't even run OS 9 well IIRC, and it came with that horrible puck mouse. Not one of Apple's brightest ideas, though the later iMacs were/are pretty good.
It was good back in 1998 lol
The first model of any new series Apple puts out is all about style, the innards only get decent after a revision or two. At least that's how it's been since Stevo came back.
I have an Orange 400Mhz with 512MB RAM. I recently upgraded the HD. It's running Tiger. It makes a really good iTunes / web server. I can even use the remtoe app on my iPhone to control the thing.
The Power PC architecture was actually pretty speedy, and a 10 year old computer running a fairly current OS with little to no lag is pretty impressive.
So THAT'S what you have to do to play games on a mac!
Man, don't scare me like that, Engadget. Before I finished reading the title I thought you said that the iMac was being replaced or something. (I'm using the iPhone optimized site so I didn't see the picture.)
Finally, a mac that i would like.
Right and more amazingly I still see idiots with Bush Cheney bumper + stickers around town. I bet they are proud on how they drove our country to the ground.
thought I was posting to that spectrum tax story, sorry.
This is an awesome mod, nostalgia made me want to play Ikaruga on XBLA right now...
Someone should shot the on that did this! This makes me so MAD!
Murdered?
Does fanboy-ism have to go that far?
Man, I think those iMacs (or the originals if that isn't one) were actually some of the worst computers ever made. I remember having non-stop problems with the one I owned when I was little. Constantly crashing with that stupid message that says "You have to restart" and your only option is to restart.
I remember all the schools bought a crap load of them too. They couldn't even be given away at the end of their life span, and a lot of them just ended up in the garbage :p.
Might have just been that piece of shit known as OS 9, but that was definitely a dark time for computers for me :p
This one will definitely live a more meaningful life as a dreamcast :p.
Wow graphics haven't evolved all THAT much since the glory days of the dreamcast. God I loved that opening boot up sequence.
I will buy one right now
Dreamcast Controller > iMac Hockey Puck Mouse
i miss the old days damnit
@engadget-"Fronk-en-shteen"
I see what you did there! Great Young Frankenstein reference there!
Zis makes no sense!
I thought the Dreamcast ran Windows CE!
