Nokia 1600 survives week in fish's belly, still makes smelly calls
First off, it's rather amazing that someone in a developed nation is still using the Nokia 1600 as their primary handset. Secondly, it's even more astounding that said handset lasted a week in the belly of a cod and could still make calls after it was rescued. In a just-barely-believable story hosted up at The Sun, a businessman was both shocked and confused when his presumably sunk cellphone began ringing his lady friend around five days after he dropped it at sea. As the tale goes, a 25 pound cod managed to swallow the thing, and a pair of fishermen discovered it upon gutting their catch. The best part? The bloke who it was returned to is still using it, despite the fact that it literally reeks of rotten fish. Who knows -- maybe he suffers from ichthyomania.

The fish was murdered. I fail to see your point or the evidence.
If you were trying to be funny then I also fail to see the humor as the cod probably left behind a family and could have been over 20 years old (not that the age of the victim is relevant in this case).
@vegan
Yes, because obviously cod, like humans, stay in a family-type of formation for their lifetime.
Where did you get your info, finding Nemo? In some species, the parents eat the babies or leave the young. Get the hell over it, and go do something that will help US, not something that will die in another 5 years without our help.
I love simple, reliable phones that have been used for years. Not that I have anything against PDAs, QWERTY phones, video phones, music phones, GPS and email phones; they are nice if that's what you want/ need.
...but I really love small phones that just work a bit more than this.
My current phone is 4+ years old and has had its battery replaced after its main one could no longer hold a suitable charge. I take pride in that fact.
A common theme on many 'new phone' posts on Engadget is that manufacturers are just making new shells on the same old thing. Which is mostly true. So why (down?)upgrade?
Isn't the love for a gadget measured by how long we actively use it? I think so :) Superficial upgrade-itis should be frowned upon, not encouraged, IMO.
wow,what a cheap bastard.
I think anyone would prefer to be called a cheap bastard than be called the idiot who dropped a very expensive gadget near the sea shore.
The shocking part of the news is not that the phone survived but that the fish was murdered.
As Leonardo da Vinci said: “I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men”
Also @Darren Murph who wrote "despite the fact that it literally reeks of rotten fish". The fish flesh only begins to rot 'after' it is dead, yes fish flesh does stink after it begins to decay but so would you if your were murdered, gutted and hung upside down for a couple of days in a supermarket.
So you are suggesting limiting our food supply even further when there are starving children throughout the world?
I would agree with you
IF the Middle East had a lasting peace treaty
IF prostitution in Southeast Asia was eliminated
IF the biases of the world were erased.
Let's take care of edifying our fellow humans before we consider the rights of animals, hmm?
Oh Cod. You, sir, have probably never taken a chemistry course in your whole life. "Rotten Fish" IS the phrase used to describe LIVING fish. That's because their skin has a (cutting-some-do-hicky-chemistry) and that's why they stink!
The really shocking thing about the article was that the fish was MACking on his wife.
the cod left behind a family???
Uh, I think cod lay millions of eggs at a time, and then parent cod and spawn go their merry ways. I don't think the cod's "family" are exactly mourning it right now.
In a catering job I happened to drop accidentally a SonyEricsson T100 in a cooler filled with melted iced water. It was kind of funny when the lcd backlight was still on floating inside. I managed to pull out the battery cover immediately as I recovered it. I immediately wiped out all the water on the phone and left it at the back of a Refrigerator's back radiator to dry up for 2 days. After that I assembled the phone battery and sim card. The phone still worked for another 2 years until it got antenna signal problems. The only damage the phone had from water damage is the buttons 1 and Answer was a bit difficult to press. Otherwise it still worked fine.
