LG recalls 30,000 830 Spyder handsets for crappy 911 connections
While things like copy and paste, multimedia messaging and video calling are nice extras to have, there's really only one thing that's most important when it comes to a reliable cellphone: the 911 functionality. Evidently, around 30,000 LG 830 Spyder handsets aren't having the easiest time dialing for help, with a product recall noting that a huge swath of 'em have "difficulty sustaining a connection or have poor voice quality on calls to emergency 911." It should be noted, however, that LG's actually being really, really proactive here, as it has only received a single report (and no injuries) to date. The Spyder phones affected have software versions T83LGV03 and T83LGV04, and you can hit the read link if you suspect yours is amongst that 30,000.

"has only received a single report"
This is a great way to have the new phone when you don't like your old one. Simply call LG and say poor voice quality when calling 911.
Then you have mass recall on your model and get a new model.
ps- I really don't get it, there is no difference calling 911 or your mom. How could voice qualitty be affected.
I'm just guessing here, but I would imagine that when you dial 911 it would attempt to connect through any available network regardless of whether it is your carrier or not. When you call your mom, it would go through your regular carriers network (if available).
It could also be part of the e911 system which uploads information to the 911 call center (if they have it equipped) which I've dealt with a few times in the past. The phone will upload GPS information to the system and keep a constant stream of data transferring (even after the call is ended until you manually end the transmission) as well as voice contact so that could be the problem which they have. Whatever the cause, I'm glad that they're making such a proactive move. This is a very good business model and VERY good publicity.
"For Spyder 830 owners, hang up and try texting..."
A single report? Knowing Americans, I'd say this single report was someone getting "creative" with their lies when trying to return the phone.
It is our first amendment right you know... Freedom of Manipulative Speech :)
I also love the FiF amendment.
I'm sure there's more to it then one single complaint - they probably were able to duplicate the results over and over again, so rather then wait for more reports, they issued the recall. Somehow I doubt that trying to fib your way to a new phone by complaining of a crappy 911 connection is going to do much for fully functional phones.
+1.
Whats next, will the FCC recall a network for not providing service in a serviced bad spot or in a building? They do approve these phones.
many phones try to boost the emitting power when making an emergency call that could cause the bad connection through frying the radio parts (if the boost is to high) or through lowering the emitting power (if it is not implemented correctly)
I HONESTLY THOUGHT IT MEANT 30,000 830 PRODUCTS HAS BEEN RECALLED LOL - i was thinking OH MY GOD!?
The button you're looking for is located to the left of your A key, above left Shift, and below Tab. You're welcome.
oh that's wonderful
The Spyder looks a lot like the Shine but without the "shine"
yeah, 9/11 was an inside job! Everybody knows already so what? nation of sheep.
the cover image is hilarious.
Do those who bought these handsets get a refund on the 911 charge that they paid for but wasn't going to work?
Really? One report?
This is what you get for buying LG. From their infamous LG charging port that comes unsoldered on everything from the chocolate and up (including the spyder) to the LG150 recall in Canada. LG are easily leading the pack for worst cell phone manufacturer.
Also good luck with those replacements. The LG150 snafu in Canada is a joke. They started out offering 3 phones, cut it to two, ran out of stock, and asked Bell and its other VPCs to offer the cheapest samsung phone instead. Right now there is shipping delays on ALL the replacements because LG hoped no one still owned their old shod fest of a phone.
Somebody bought one of those LG150s, didn't they?
I've actually had this happen twice with my iPhone. I've tried to call 911 and it just won't go through. I've had to restart the phone in order to get it to have a call go through.
Where do you live that you've had to call 911 twice in roughly (I'm guessing) a year?
Ah, thank god the emergency number in my country is 112... I was getting worried...
This RECALL solution, if you follow the read link, is a 'free software update.' No schmuck is getting a free phone or a new model out of this recall. This is just a way for LG to have a legal 'out' in case someone elects not to upgrade the firmware on their phone as most carriers recommend you do once a month.
