I honestly think she's respecting her husbands wishes on this one. Really - it's not a huge issue, and in the position they're in - it's a sacrifice (and those exist in marriage).

If Bill Gates really cares about Windows Mobile, he should buy an iPhone for every employee working on WM. Likewise Macs for the Windows team. After all, that's how Windows 3.1 came about (and yes the Mac copied Xerox Alto, which I used).
Steven "17" Ballmer does the same thing to his kids, forbidding them from using Google. How about instead of keeping your family from using competing products and services, you make products that are superior to what's available from your competitors?

Is this for real? Is Gates so petty that he actually forbids his wife to own a particular brand of phone? Why must Jobs be on the verge of death, while this tool still lives?
What is so wrong with Melinda Gates wanting an iPhone? Who the heck in their right mind doesn't want to fondle an iPhone. Windows Mobile sucks and even Mrs. Gates knows that much. If Bill Gates wasn't one of the richest men in America, Melinda would probably have divorced him for not letting her have an iPhone. Hell, all WinMo users are merely closet iPhone lovers. They put up a brave front by saying how wonderful their crappy WinMo phones are, but just like their desire to cross-dress, they hide their feelings and and secretly pray for somebody to buy them an iPhone as a gift.
Melinda Gates is the wife of one of the richest man in the nation and even though she could buy any handset she wants, she pines and weeps to own an iPhone and god knows what other Apple products. What's the point of owning the world if you can't own an iPhone? Sock it to Bill Gates, my dear Melinda. You may have to divorce your hubby once you see the iPhone 3 in all its blazing glory. You may even want to become Steve Jobs mistress.

If she had any sense about her, she would quickly come to realize that a product such as the HTC Touch HD is many times the phone that the iPhone is, both in terms of software and hardware, and with TF3D (especially ports of TF3D 2) it is way slicker than the iPhone ever could hope to be with regards to user interface.
Goes to show you even direct competitors want iPhone,.how sad for winmo . Throw in the towel already n work on zunephone!! Every single winmo device gas been taken to school by iPhone os.

Let's be honest, is anyone actually surprised. No matter how much better the competitions products are, if you are seen to be using one then you'll be seen to be endorsing them whilst simultaneously saying that your own products are inferior. Certainly that is the way that the press will spin it. I'd be willing to bet that the Gates household also doesn't have a PS3...
I'm sick of people saying that iPods and iPhones have good interfaces.
There's only two basic things to it:
1. You're used to a particular interface in the case of the iPod that they've stuck with pretty much unchanged for generations of products, and since you're familiar with it, it's easier to use than a Sony, iRiver or other competing product interface when really they're just as good.
2. Apple product have touch interfaces. There's the gimmick factor of that and that they're easier to 'pick up and use'. Both are awful reasons. I'm not saying they're necessarily bad, but have you ever tried using an Apple product while it's in your pocket?
No, actually Apple have consistently shown that they know what makes a usable, intuitive interface.
Microsoft's solution is to a) have fucking pop up paper clips and other annoying shit, or in the case of WinMo, try to replicate the desktop.
WHO THE FUCK WANTS A START MENU ON A PHONE?
There's no law against buying an iphone and putting it in a custom casing with a windows logo you know melinda.. (as long as you don't sell it).
