Heys USA, who likes to brag about producing the "world's lightest
luggage," has just announced their newest piece of carry-on kit. The BioCase is available in either a 19 or 20-inch "indestructible" hardshell, and features a
biometric security system that stores up to eight fingerprints and keeps a charge for up to ninety days (recharge via an AC adapter or USB charger, both included). And since a corporate press release wouldn't be complete without a bit of hype, the company's President and CEO points out that his company endeavors to "leverage technology to rewrite the rules of luggage." Man, that's sweet!
Available in April, 2009 for a price to be determined.
So what if the TSA has to open it?
You would think that the case would have one of those TSA override key locks built in. Wouldn't make sense if it didn't.
its a carry-on one, so they shouldn't need to open it without you being there
Fingerprint as a password is very insecure. It's like having a password, not only written down, but written on anything you touch.
this is not the movies, no one will get the duster and sample my prints.. then replicate them in jelly.. all to come back to my luggage to try n touch it..
now if you start talking bout locking my house with that thing... thats a different story...
Not necessarily replicate them in jelly... there was an episode of Mythbusters where they cracked a fingerprint lock with a paper printout of the needed fingerprint... moistened with saliva, but still, just paper and ink.
Piece of sellotape (sticky tape for the brits) and voilà.
us brits call it sellotape too:) only bluepeter (kids tv show) calls it ticky tape, guess its because its a brand name
I think the TSA will use the machette they just found in another guy's bag on this just out of spite. I highly doubt those that are so proficient at wasting other people's time find biometric locks acceptable.
Because nothing shouts 'STEAL ME' more than a case with a biometric lock...
Daft idea. But if they offered one that magically, only opened if I played the opening strains of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro", on a wooden flute, of East Asian origin, then I might be interested...
But a rare and beautiful flute such as that should be protected, which is why you locked it... in... the... case.
Aww, crap.
Act 1; scene 1; line 2: "CARRY - ON KIT"
This is not intended for checking; therefore, security features are allowed - though I will agree that you probably don't need to lock a bag you are not intending to let out of your sight.
"Indestructable"?!?
Two words... London. Heathrow.
They should put a flashing LED countdown on it too, for giggles.
Nice idea if it will be about the same price as other luggage options, but I don't think so. It will be 200% more expensive, so I will pass, thank you!
I misread 'Heys USA'... at first I thought the Engadget guys were imitating John Travolta in South Park when he'd say, 'hey yous guys...'
-derp!
If I am not mistaken that is a zipper. If the biometric gimmick no matter how secure is only holding the zipper traveler then I could open this case with a ball point ben in less then 5 seconds.
I never thought I would have to charge my suitcase...
I have leveraged technology to write this comment.
I have leveraged technology to rewrite this comment.
Leverage is straight out of the CEO Handbook...
And now any CEO can leverage the BioCase to protect his or her handbook...
