I just watched some of Fallon's first show on Hulu, and he did seem pretty nervous, and the De Niro interview was not great. He seemed more comfortable when Justin Timberlake came out.
I know De Niro's a huge star and that helps bring in viewers, but it would have been better to have someone else as the first guest, maybe just move Justin up, give Jimmy a guest that he can feel at ease with. Jimmy didn't need the added pressure of interviewing a huge star like De Niro, who's not exactly an easy interview for any of the established hosts out there. Plus, De Niro doesn't really seem to jibe with Fallon's target viewership, also evidenced by how young the audience seemed.

Scorsese has said that DeNiro is a very shy person. Watch any interview he does, he's never open and he's often very short and squeamish.
@praetorianpi: That's my point. They should have started with a guest that's easier to interview.

Awesome! I saw the first show with Fallon yesterday and it was good, they've lined up some pretty good guests this first week, and apparently next week too (regardless of what Conan said haha), if they're looking for good and interesting guests, it only makes sense to go to Engadget :P Even if you miss it on TV you can always watch it on Hulu, I probably watch more TV on there now than on actual TV :P

I saw his show last night, and it was terrible! I like Jimmy and I want to see him succeed, but if last night's show was any indication of things to come - there is not much hope for Late Night. The "Lick stuff for $10" bit was pointless and not even funny, he also even managed to make Robert De Niro look uninteresting, he looked miserable and wanted to get the F out of there ASAP.
Just remember the first year of Conan was awkward at best and it took him awhile to find his groove. It will probably take Jimmy awhile too.
Indeed. Last night's show was absolutely terrible; even Carson's show is always funnier than what I saw. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though, chalk it up to opening night jitters, and check back in a month or so. I really hope they improve, I'm not looking forward to finding a permanent replacement for that time slot.
Yeah the show wasn't very good. He definitely looked nervous. Still, I'll be checking it once in a while to see if he might improve. And I'm definitely watching the Engadget episode.
