Panasonic's CES 2009 Viera HDTVs get US pricing and dates
Panasonic announced a slew of Viera TVs at CES, and although we already knew when they'd be making their Japanese debut, US info has been hard to come by. That's starting to change: pricing details are leaking out, and CNET and HDGuru have managed to assemble a pretty exhaustive list of what to expect and how much it'll cost. Of interest, Panny's still going strong on the plasma tip, so those of you aching for the best picture possible but unwilling to shell out for the dead-ended Kuro will still have plenty of options -- there's a set at every point between the 42-inch 720p X1 at $899, the 50-inch 1080p S1 with a nicer NEO-PDP panel for $1,799, the 50-inch THX-certified G10 with VieraCast for $1,999 and the as-yet-unpriced, one-inch thick wireless 54-inch Z1. As for LCDs, it's a similar story at smaller sizes: you've got sets ranging from the budget $499 720p 32-inch C12 to the $1,099 120Hz 1080p 37-inch G1 with Motion Focus and a 20,000:1 contrast ratio. Check all the info at the read links; we'll be scouring the wire praying for news that Panny's bought up the Kuro tech from Pioneer.

Err super think? The thickness, inconsequential but without its own merits to be sure of i double.
Hmm an interesting point.
The real question here is
Is this the worlds ugliest cat?

When I watch an HDTV, I watch it from the side. Just like in the picture above.
Some of these new Panasonics do look appealing. And the NeoPDP is a nice feature. But I am glad I picked up my Pioneer 5020FD from Costco a couple weeks ago instead. Not a single regret with my purchase.
Um... 1rst wireless television... Is it me or is that odd?
As soon as I see a decent 52 incher for $1000 or under, fuck the recession, I'm getting a new tv.
Sadly there's no word on OLED screens...
Yay it's the tech of yesterday, tomorrow! Are they going to milk this tech for another century like the combustion engine? Time to use those millions in the banks to bring in the new tech like OLED, SED, Laser TV...
Seeing as how Pioneer's Elite sets had a pretty much perfect picture i'm not sure what you hope to gain from any of the new technologies. Laser TVs are just the same old RPTVs in a nicer outfit - if you've read reviews of Mitsubishi's laser sets you'd know the black levels are mediocre-at-best. Only contender would be OLED, but i'm not sure what you want here. Do you want Panny to stop producing all of their current line-up and just sell 12" OLED sets? Sounds like a brilliant idea.
Until I'm able to get tomorrow's tech yesterday, I'll be happy with today's tech now.
That 42" S1 would be perfect for my dorm room...I'm seriously considering purchasing
I am in the market for either a plasma TV (46" to 50"). I was ready to pull the trigger on either a Panasonic TH46PZ85U, TH46PZ850U, or TH50PZ85U. Now I wait until the 50-inch 1080p S1 to be available.
We just got our S1 in stock where I work, Sears. We haven't put it on display yet, but you can definitely order them at Sears already.
The 42" X1 at my local Best Buy looks completely like shit. I don't know if it's the 2 X1 sets they have or if it's all of them but the picture quality is terrible, theres a lot of imaging artifacts and weird dots. These Pannys on display replaced the 42PZs that used to be in their place and they don't compare in the least.
I hate to "well actually" you, but...
Well actually, the X1 series is made to replace the PX80U series, while the S1 series replaces the PZ80U. I will agree with you that I am disappointed with the X1 series, but I have high hopes for the S1, which I will unbox later this week.
Don't forget, Panasonic has a lot of special deals through Sears. I'm not soliciting, just an FYI.
I may be misreading this or the HDGuru / CNET articles but:
"the 50-inch 1080p S1 with a nicer NEO-PDP panel for $1,399"
I think that model is noted on CNET / HDGuru for $1799, but I like Engadget's price better :)
Wow pretty low prices! Nice
I second that on the low prices. Recession be damned, those sets are looking tempting!
Looks sweet
My grandpa's TV was wireless 19" BW - yep you got the first
