PSP2 rumor surfaces once more, sounds awfully familiar

The PSP2 rumor mill has certainly been cranking overtime as of late, and it doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down, even if it isn't exactly churning out many new rumors. This time, however, they're apparently be backed up by a developer source "close to Sony," who again says that the PSP2 (or PSP-4000, as it's also being called) will ditch the UMD drive and add a sliding screen that covers most of the controls when it's closed. According to the source, that would still let folks play games like LocoRoco that only use the shoulder buttons when it's closed, and Sony is reportedly keen to get developers to create more games that can be played in that state. No word on a release date from the latest source, unfortunately, although Eurogamer seems to be sticking to its earlier report that it'll launch by the end of the year.

I'd rather have a PSP2 than a PSP-4000 myself.
lol?
lol?
What'd I say? I'm still confused as to whether the recent buzz has been over a PSP-4000 or PSP2.
I'm very curious, and not to certain, if I should indeed be laughing audibly currently.

I don't think the PSP2 would be called the PSP-4000. The PSP-1000 to 3000 have been revisions of the PSP system, whereas the PSP2 would be totally different altogether. A PSP-4000 suggests just another hardware revision to the PSP, just like the DS Lite and DSi.
PSP2 and PSP-4000 are NOT the same. There are two sets of rumors floating around.
The PSP-4000 is suppose to be an update on the current PSP that is suppose to be release this year (currently at PSP-3000).
The PSP2 is suppose to be an all new PSP.
LocoRoco uses more than just the shoulder buttons.
I just want it to actually have more then 3 good games
sound like the guy that render will be able to sue if Sony decided to steal his design!
AS SOON AS PSP gets 2 ANALOG STICKS like it shoulda had, the "more good games" problem will take care of itself.
"PSP2 (or PSP-4000, as it's also being called)"
Hey engadget, if you're going to report, do it right. Everyone keeps referring to the PSP-4000 as a PSP2 and that's just stupidity running around with confusion. So instead of trying to make a headline using PSP2, call it like it is, PSP-4000.
Until the PSP gets guts that are entirely new/updated so much that future software no longer runs on the old PSPs, it's not a PSP 2 but yet another stupid (in so much that it is wasting resources from a true successor) revision.
The cluster**** of misinformation among gaming blogs and news outlets about the whole revision coming this year and PSP 2 that may be coming next year is staggering...
on the above pic design, why would they waste valuable screen space only for several indicators, speaker holes, and huge Sony & PlayStation logos?
I call this genuinely fake.
@auricom
LOL. We all know the image is a mock-up.
fake indeed...
but that concept is still teh sex
If the guy that did that render was getting royalties he'd be a rich man by now.
man i just wish that THIS is what it will look like
sadly im grinding for a disappointment
Of course it will not be like that... That device rendered here cannot be made by current technology.
On another note, I hope the form factor will be playable, unlike this render. And I hope the graphic engine will be way better! This should be the main concern.
Just what I was thinking. This image has been used EVERYWHERE now, and it's a fan render. Do the websites have the right to use it? Has he been actually contacted?
If Sony could take the mock-up on this page and design that, I would buy it in an instant. Granted they would have to contend with some sort of anti-scratch tech, but I would pick that bad-boy up on day 1.
PS2P
Now that's just confusing.
I wonder if Sony will have a stroke of genius and try to find a new name. They're VERY uncreative when it comes to that. Knowing them we'll undoubtedly be seeing PSIV and PSP3 in the future.
@ZaxCG2
Maybe because those names kick your horse ass out the door, then crap on your face.
'Playstation' is a wicked name. what would you rather 'X-box' even tho the stupid thing doesn't even have a big x on it anymore nor is it a normal box. I guess its not their fault tho if they were gonna call it something different this gen it would be the 'red ring curvy box 360'. What does originality have to do with the thing anyway even if it was called a butt-station-portable 2 does that mean i would be like "oh i hate the name id rather take the DS"
2PS2P
P2PS
homebrew style
I've gotta say, that's one sexy-looking form factor. Give me 16GB memory sticks for media playback, and I'll take it over an iPod for music and vids.
What? It plays games, too? DECENT ones? That seals it.
...though accelerometer support would be cool. Is that part of the deal?
give me 32gb sdhc support and - well, i dont really need a portable gaming console. although the hardware looks sexy as hell...
Remember, you're talking about SONY here. Let me repeat, SONY. The company that maintains proprietary media formats long after the entire planet has moved on to bigger and better things.
I'm actually impressed they're dropping UMD; it shows uncharacteristic attention to the market on their part. Asking them to adopt SDHC over MemoryStick is probably pushing too far.
easy and cheap deal extreme has an adapter that lets you put in 2 miicro sd cards, and sell 8 gig cards for SUPER cheap
you can get a psp used for like what 100? the adapter and cards for another like 30....
das what i did
If it turns out anything like that render then it's an absolute no-no...that thing looks horrible months ago...and it still does.
Maybe it's slides sideways rather than vertical, that would make more sense.
sideways? wtf?
Where is this render from?
I mean is it like an official (but very old and most likely not relevant) render from sony? Or did somebody do their own version of the perfect PSP?
fan-made.
I agree that the render looks like an ergonomic disaster and a cracked screen waiting to happen (no way you could grip it with the analog nubs like that) but a screen that slides sideways? That's just stupid.
I don't want to play games with the shoulder buttons. There's better ways to work around your design flaws Sony. But then I wouldn't buy another PSP anyways.
Nintendo already won the hand held race, always and forever, even if they release another PSP, the only fans they will get is the PSP fans, and it doent guarantee great games.
But its the first to really survive against a Nintendo handheld unlike the Sega Gamegear, Nomad, SNK's Neogeo Pocket, etc. Competition is good.
Some say the PSP killed the GameBoy, and it sure looks that way. As for titles:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/psp/alpha/
http://www.metacritic.com/games/ds/alpha/
the DS and PSP are ~equal, tack on the downloadable PS1 titles and things like http://www.psponme.com/list_psp.asp and the PSP is way ahead.
I think you're underestimating the PSP fanbase and software - especially in Japan.
I have to admit that being able to play all teh PSX games is a must. It would be cool if the new one can play PS2 games...
What's sad is that psp development is dropping off.. piracy is rampant.. and games look rather pitiful unless you've got plenty of resources in your art department.... The DS is a great but the screen is just too small.
I'd say that piracy is far worse on the DS. PSP has been constantly updated since launch to stop it (not that its done much good, but it's something) where DS hasn't really done a thing to the firmware itself. For me, the choice was buy a flash cart or sell my DS because there wasn't any games worth paying for, so it's not like they're losing business anyways. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Truth is the PSP currently has a lot of development. Look it up.
Yep, my R4 revived my ds from it's alarm clock days (a pretty damn good alarm clock at that ;)
Only 8% of psp users use homebrew and of that only 12% pirate. That's a low number out of 50+,million users
@ soopergooman
it's been said that 36% of people on 84% of websites make up random numbers 19% of the time.
60% of the time all the time
Looks like somebody has been playing with an OQO.
Its quite obvious that when three versions of one handheld had been released that a full successor will come.
When I saw the title in my RSS reader, I knew that picture would be used yet again.
I have never really understood why Sony wants to play around in the handheld market. I had a PSP for the longest time but it was never as "cool" as I thought it would be. But who knows maybe this time around they can make it happen.
So what's the media format going to be if not UMD? Pro Duo?
