PSP2 rumor surfaces once more, sounds awfully familiar

The PSP2 rumor mill has certainly been cranking overtime as of late, and it doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down, even if it isn't exactly churning out many new rumors. This time, however, they're apparently be backed up by a developer source "close to Sony," who again says that the PSP2 (or PSP-4000, as it's also being called) will ditch the UMD drive and add a sliding screen that covers most of the controls when it's closed. According to the source, that would still let folks play games like LocoRoco that only use the shoulder buttons when it's closed, and Sony is reportedly keen to get developers to create more games that can be played in that state. No word on a release date from the latest source, unfortunately, although Eurogamer seems to be sticking to its earlier report that it'll launch by the end of the year.

Read-Only memory stick pro duos sound good, but probably more expensive than UMD discs no?
It's easy to understand why Sony is in the handheld market as they have done extremely well in it.
wow, no offence, but I would not get that in my life, it looks like a small PS3 controller with a screeon on it.
Doesn't anyone think that the render above would place your hands way to close to each other. Those buttons are even closer than the dual shock 3. Looks like your thumbs would be touching when you handle both sticks together.
I'll admit it looks pretty...but not very functional.
I agree that it does not look functional, but since the two sticks are actually nubs, there is a lot less movement than a regular stick, so maybe your thumbs wouldn't touch.
What about a touch screen and movement sensors?
I sold my PSP-1000 recently and would certainly buy this new PSP2 if it was seemed with the one in the picture (with a more polished and uniform look).

That looks disgusting....we are talking about PSP2. I can't even imagine someone would actually consider that as the title 'iWish' suggests.
It gets everything wrong as a smart phone, a portable gaming device, camera, music player and apparently windows media center. I would never get that even if it were technically feasible. Can't imagine why someone would "wish" for this....

One might argue that it LOOKS much better. Since it will never (repeat, NEVER) actually be built, we'll never know if it actually IS better.

I'd love this to be true for 2 reasons. UMD's are a waste when RAM is no longer expensive, and I WANT ANOTHER THUMB STICK!

Wow do I wish the new PSP actually looked like that pic. With a Sony OLED screen!!?? :D,,,
It just needs 4 things:
- Touchscreen for strategy games
- Accelerometer/Compass for Locoroco and FPS games.
- A second nub
- R2 & L2
That's it.
They should add a tilt functions too. ^_^
For those that do not have hope in Sony for something other than memory stick support going forward, think about the fact that the ps3 has a sd and cf slot, and that Sony's ebook readers support both memory stick and sdhc, the newest one PRs-7000 supporting up 32gb of each!
How nice would it be to get a psp with better hardware, new design, higher resolution, 2 joysticks, accelerometer and up to 64 gb in expandable memory at one time.
I would buy one.
It would also cost as much if not more than a ps3 atm.

If it were to be made and resemble anything like the wonderful photo we see there i would buy it and not give it a second thought.
I know I'm dreaming, but what's the chance of getting that thing with a phone built in? I know it would either be thick as a brick or need to be rechaged every 2 hours, but what I wouldn't give to be able to play a fps on the go and only need one device in my pocket.

if Sony knows whats good for them, they'll get this product ready and in working order as soon as possible. It's a losing battle for them right now, they seriously need to get people talking.

hmm....curious though I would like to see the same psp design with dual joysticks. I think that might work for the best as the current design has a really well layed out control
I've been envisioning my ideal PSP design as something like a cross between a touchscreen PSP and the PS2 Retrocon from Madcatz. The layout was so much better than that of the PSP - dual in-line shoulder buttons and dual sticks (even better if you could have actual sticks rather than nubs that you could either remove for storage or popped in and out in some fashion). It must have an an accelerometer or tilt sensor for Loco Roco (still surprised that Loco Roco 2 didn't come with a USB sensor, like the mic that was bundled with Talkman)
