AMD announces GLOBALFOUNDRIES spin-off, forgets to name it something awesome
AMD's finally dumped its fabrication facilities and technology onto a new spin-off brand, as expected. ATIC (Advanced Technology Investment Company) is on board as well, and the newly-formed GLOBALFOUNDRIES has $6 billion in investments to start out with, along with 2,800 employees. GLOBALFOUNDRIES will be primarily be building chips for AMD, just like usual, but will also be open to other gigs as a 3rd party chip builder -- its main rival TSMC just scored a deal with Intel to produce Atom chips on the cheap, a first for Intel who usually keeps production and processes in-house. First up for the new company? Churning out a 32nm process. We like the sound of that.

GlobalFoundries is somewhat of an awesome name if you know how old-school foundries ran...
I like it too.
Global Foundries sounds good to me. Nice and industrial, not so silicon valley like Advanced Micro Devices.
so what does this mean for shareholders?
Cheaper Micros?
If they pass the savings on to the consumer. We'll see.
no -on at the end?
I'm down with the Glo-Fo, mo-fo.
Where exactly are the fab plants located?
ah, read link to the rescue.
NY - love that! Give this company a tax break!
There is a strange, but interesting dynamic here, as AMD has a major partnership in the arab world now with the government of Abu Dhabi, and Intel has one of their prime development teams and some manufacturing located in Israel. Not really sure what that says about either company, but it is interesting, nonetheless.
I think it says, "If you support AMD, you're a terrorist."

"You've got a partnership with Arabs! They funded the terror attacks on 9/11! You are NOT a damn USA patriot! Do you want to see more Americans die? Your family should be ashamed of you!"

Sorry, can't help but to take a shot at that fool.
GlobalFoundries sounds good, kinda like a future very evil company that uses its monopoly on chip production to hold the world hostage and build its own army and all that.
Presentation from AMD about the foundry in december here http://www.bloobble.com/broadband-presentations/presentations?itemid=2022
GLOBALFOUNDRIES? How is that not awesome?
Global Foundries....how can that not be a cool name.? Picture sweaty grimy dudes pouring out liquid silicon next to a blast furnace so hot it can melt your face off....I even like the logo and font....
Melting at over 3400 degrees F.....whew....just singed by eyebrows off thinking about it....look like Bob Geldoff now in The Wall....
