iMac (early 2009) unboxing and hands-on
Just like the new Mac mini, the new iMac is the externally the same apart from the terribly sad swap of FireWire 400 for an additional USB port and the addition of mini DisplayPort, but inside things have been updated all around. We're busy putting this 2.93GHz bad boy to the test as we speak, but in the meantime check out the unboxing below -- and let us know if you find the tiny new keyboard super-cute or super-ridiculous, we're on the fence.

Okay... Not taking things away... IMPROVING. I would not complain about my CD-RW drive being "taken away" and exchanged for a DVD-RW Drive.....
Yes you need an adaptor, but I would rather need an adaptor to use the old standard and be prepared for the next generation of products.
I do agree that the loss of the keys is a bummer, but as you admitted, it can be upgraded. It is my opinion that anyone who seriously needs these keys for stuff should probably get a better keyboard than this anyway. And those who don't "Need them" will learn to live with it anyway.
Remember when were are all mad when floppy was dropped? Tech changes/improves people... get over it.
I think as long as they continue to offer the choice of both the small and extended keyboards, everything will be kosher. Some folks don't need the extended keyboard, some (including myself) do...
And actually I hadn't given it much thought until the prospect of it disappearing was raised by this latest development. If they were to go exclusively with the small keyboard there could be some serious hurt in the pro/business applications.
They default with the one without the numberpad, they don't default with the choice. This makes it appear as if they are beginning to phase out the numberpad, hence the contempt.

XD
Screw That...it's a mac...it has nasty finger prints all over it, and there's no 10-key pad
Some comments are so stupid they don't even deserve a response, but I felt David's at least needed to be flagged as one of those incredibly stupid comments. By the way, thanks for adding to the popularity of Apple-related articles by commenting on this one. Much appreciated, and it assures us that there will be more articles like this in the future.
Zak,
That's my opinion, I entitle you to yours which is that my opinion is stupid...I have my theory of the way computers should be, and you have the same...I choose not to have a mac because I want to be able to do whatever I want to my computer without being subjected to "voiding my warranty" In summation, don't piss on my comment because you don't like it.
David
I'm sorry, but no. "It has fingerprints all over it" is not an opinion. It's just an incredibly stupid thing to say. Your "no keypad" comment is flat out wrong, because you can order the keyboard with the keypad for free. You can do all kinds of things by way of upgrades without voiding warranties, so the only reasonable conclusion is that you're a dumbass .
Are we all clear now? Thanks for playing, say something less stupid next time.
meanwhile, david tries to think of a clever response. And tries...
Dude, stop being a jerk, I just choose to not have a mac because if the price among other things, what the hell are you anyway, the mac guru douchebag extrodinaire? Do not take stuff personally or generalize statements. If you were intelligent, you would see that the comment about fingerprints was sarcasm. Obviously, you are taking this way too seriously, if that's the case you should find some other way to waste your time alone at home.
Once again spotted in the wild is ZAK! A rude Apple lover who tells people whats right and what wrong. All hail ZAK the king of the Idiots. It is one thing to have an opinion and it is an entirely other to tell people what there opinion is, and should be. You need to just make statements defending your undying love for apple and not throw your ideology on other people. Not everyone is going to have some fixation for Apple like you obviously have. Get over yourself and go work for apple if you wanna take it up the tail pipe from them so bad. I like Apple just like the next Dork but not everything they do is better than everyone else. There is a lot of innovation beyond what Apple can give us out there. So don't act so immature and limited! A real techy wouldn't be so infantile and limited on there knowledge of products and be so bias for there love for the one and only Apple. ZAK get a life and get off this website :) Obviously people are more than annoyed with you. Even your own Apple Fanboys don't care for you much LOL.
David - How was I generalizing anything? I specifically responded to each thing you listed. Oh, and why should I care if you buy one or not? Telling you you're an idiot because you're complaining about fingerprints is not the same thing as saying you should buy one, is it?
Hawtkouture - What are you, stalking me? I'm flattered, but I'm not into that sort of thing. Again, you're free to disprove anything I said if you like, but I expect that won't happen - mostly because you can't. And how am I forcing ideology on anybody? Can you show me where I told anybody they had to buy a Mac? No seriously, point it out to me. When you fail, can I expect you to start reading what I write instead of making assumptions without reading it?
Yeah I didn't think so. Reading is hard!
Seriously Zak, you are a loud-mouthed idiot. As I stated earlier, if YOU could read, the finger prints comment was sarcasm. I'll be sure to treat you like an idiot next time and separate it from the rest of the text with a heading labeled "This is sarcasm." I was commenting how the specific model that engadget unboxed had no keypad, they asked for OPINIONS on the keyboard at the one of their post. From now on YOU should read shot before you start being a complete douchebag to complete strangers on the Internet. By the way, I like apple, but hate mac. If you don't understand that then you should just keep it to yourself as it isbsomething that is kind of complicated
This is the last comment I will make to you ZAK. I have been reading your posts. That is why I responded. You are nauseating to listen to. I mean really bad!!! You obviously are some APPLE FREAK. I love APPLE like I said but I don't whack off to the thoughts of Steve Jobs plowing my anus. I'm actually ashamed to say I have been reading your nasty little comments and I think the general consensus here is that your not wanted and not many like you. You continue to rant on about silly little things. I'm not stalking you, actually if I were to meet you in person I would smash that iMac over your face to shut you the hell up. This is not stalking, this is the response to someone who is a blabber cun*. Sorry for the language but true! I'm sorry that you have been abused by whoever you have been abused by and so your going onto engadget.com and taking it out on people BUT DUDE! Go get some therapy and stop all the hateful rage. Also deal with your fixation for APPLE it is kinda scary. Really it is... LOL
I have the aluminum, wired, with keypad keyboard, and love it. I could survive without the actual keypad, but not without the editing & proper cursor keys. I propose a medium keyboard!
I like it - pitty about the mirror though.
Oh well, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"
"iMac (early 2009) unboxing and hands-on - engadget staff jizzes in their pants"
There... fixed the titlev for ya.
Never mind the computer - look at that styrofoam!
Computers come and go, specs change like the wind - but styrofoam is forever!
I wish they would get rid of Styrofoam as there are alternatives. Maybe they could make Styrofoam a option.
What I am curious about is if the iMac can drive a 30" LCD with the mini display port.
Um keyboard terrible, i need my number pad on the left hand side, so much faster for typing in long series of numbers
Um... keyboards don't have number pads on the left side. They're on the right side, unless it's a specialty keyboard. If you want a keyboard with a number pad, then order it that way. Why are people having such a hard time with this concept?
I love how Apple ships these expensive, pretty pieces of machinery to you guys and every tech blog under the sun - who will basically spec test 'em and lob them down a flight of stairs to "check durability" (no offense) - but for all of us consumers who could actually use one, $200 more than the last model. Oh, and if you want a RAM upgrade, prepare for reaming.
Really? 200$ more expensive? So that means that there was a 1299$ 24" iMac from the previous generation, right?
Fail
Don't you remember Steve Jobs saying "Keyboard users are standing in the way of human progress"? This is the first step to get you to buy their upcoming Apple Wheel! Next year they plan on removing all function keys, because after all how many people really use them?
Mmmm, gotta love the glare on that display. Who needs mirrors when you have a couple of Macs around the house?
yep. it's a dramatic photo. look at it, and then tell me engadget biases its coverage in favor of apple! if they showed a pic like that of a glossy brand-x computer, the fanboys would be all over them for staging a photo that dramatized a weakness in the hardware.
and yet another brazen example of engadget coddling apple products (sarcasm):
http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/04/is-the-iphone-hotter-than-we-think/
you just KNOW engadget would never jump on a story like that, right? Nooo.....
I've had that keyboard for months now and I find it fantastic. The keys are soft, and because they're so small and thin they're very
un-intrusive and give your fingers a nice mini massage. You'll never look back. In fact, I've had trouble using the older mac keyboards since. And forget about PC keyboards, they feel like typing on rocks now.
Is there a re mini display port to DVI adapter?
you'd think that with the bigger screen, they'd have less of a reason to hold on to the jay leno chin, but I guess they're keeping it just for the apple advertising space.
That's where the computer part goes, numbnuts.
lol, I agree. Wouldn't mind it if the logo wasn't there. They need to shave it off.
hey engadget, are these things free and have to be sent back or do you have a budget to buy them? or, what happens to the old ones you have? i can't imagine you guys sitting on a tower of imacs.
I could not agree more. It would be nice to see some variation on engadgets website once in awhile. Also I have been reading this whole thread and ZAK please shut up. Your a loud wind bag. Your extremely bias and really annoying to listen to. We get the point! You love apple and want to mate with them. So play go with you and your apple alone in your room and stop flooding this board with your violent protest fabout how much you wanna Scr*w apple in the A** ok. You must be some adolescent jerk who has a boner for apple. Get over yourself! Thanks ~_^ I like Apple just as much as the next dork but they do make mistakes and they definitely not the end all, be all!
drooling
I'd have one if the graphic chip doesn't suck so bad
You don't need 8x AA to get fragged by some 12yo Serbian kid at a net cafe.
Does anyone else use the "real" delete key that apple keeps trying to kill?
"We're busy putting this 2.93GHz bad boy to the test..." Bad boy? What ever did it do? You guys caught it masturbating or something?
lol, Apple loves to take basic things away from it's customers and try to pass it off as cutting-edge (i.e. floppy drive, s-video, numeric keypad, matte screen, and now, the Firewire it pushed so hard for so many years). And then some stuff they just don't trust you with from the beginning, like a right-click button on your mouse.
Apple: I love them and I love to hate them
DISCLAIMER: This was typed on an Apple PowerBook G4
I don't like that the headphone port is in the back.
.
Does anybody know if this bad boy supports more than 4GB of RAM? My dream iMac has 8GB of RAM, USB 3 ports, and a dual layer -BD-RE drive. I wonder how long I'll have to wait.
Hmm... interesting.
blu ray will not happen anytime soon because apple wants you to buy HD content from the itunes store... besides blu ray is gay... too expensive and they still get scratched... regarding the keyboard... it looks nice and all but using the numbers on the top sucks.. ill keep the one ive got thank you apple... prob keep it for my next imac too... ps. engadget please keep the apple stories coming, they are about the only ones im interested in, that and hacking the wind with osx... oh what am i saying i love em all engadget...
New keyboard is a ripoff. Clearly a cost saving measure that Apple wants to convince us that we need, by making it a default option. I'm still waiting for a wireless version of their keyboard WITH a number pad.
The glass panel is held to the frame by 14 magnets. You can remove it using two industrial suction cups.
I'm not upgrading my imac until core 2 duo dies and solid state hdd is standard
8GB of ram is awesome though
On apples iMac page on there site they say "If it has a cable, iMac has a place for it. You’ll find four USB 2.0 ports on iMac itself and two on the Apple Keyboard. Connect faster peripherals to the FireWire 800 port for even more possibilities."
IF IT HAS A CABLE IMAC HAS A PLACE FOR IT MY ASS!!!
Khmm..wheres my firewire 400 for my excellent Panasonic PV-GS320!
