Kindle 2 hacked for tethered web browsing, but not the way you think

Looking to hook your laptop up to your Kindle 2 and do a bit of free-riding on its built-in 3G modem? Then this is not the hack for you. If, on the other hand, you've been pining to browse the web on your Kindle and eschew the convenience of wireless connectivity, then you're in luck! Apparently, the Kindle 2 has a few surprises in its debug mode that the original Kindle didn't have, one of which is a USB networking facility that will let you bypass the usual 3G option and instead take advantage of the internet connection on a connected computer. Not the most practical option, to be sure, but it also probably won't cause Amazon to start breathing down your neck (as the other, as yet not possible option, likely would). Hit up the link below for the complete how-to.

What we need is the GSM version and a T-Mobile $5 unlimited plan...
AHAHAH!!!
Uhhh....the CDMA version of the Kindle has NO monthly service plan. Why the hell would you want it on T-Mobiles edge network for a fee?
Because they can Deactivate the ESN/MEID of the CDMA iteration if they find out hacks that allow you to chew through GB of data/month on that "free shopping" service...
CDMA = locked down
GSM = free!
Thats why Apple iPhone is the greatest!
AHAHAH!
when you say "AHAHAHAHAHA" in every post, you put the "goon" in "igoon"
More like iTard....
Idiots... RTFA!
"If you follow the steps outlined below, you should be be able to set up your Kindle to use your laptop or desktop computer's internet connection."
Not the other way around!
We did read teh article... we just did not like what it had to say!
NerdTalker you talk a lot of crap!
AHAHAH!!!
yeah I don't even care about ebooks but id be willing to buy a kindle if I could get free internet out of it.
What does this even mean??? I got a kindle 2 last week and was hoping someone would hack it for tethering, (no need though, I tether my iphone). I don't understand what this exactly allows you to do.
Just read what it says, it explains it pretty well, you can use the Kindle 2 as a USB CDMA tethering solution.

I guess you didn't read what it says either. It's NOT for using the kindle as a cdma modem. It's for using your much faster home internet connection through your laptop/desktop to download your books.
@noneedlessnoise: Obviously, it does not explain it very well, as have it the wrong way around. You can use your computer's internet connection (instead of using CDMA) on Kindle. You CAN'T use CDMA to surf the web on your computer.
Summary: You can set a debug mode that makes the Kindle appear to the host computer as a network device, so you can allow the Kindle to share your computer's Internet connection. This does not let your computer use the Kindle's CDMA modem for connectivity.
Don't Panic

Panic attack?
Sexy Girl Panic?
"i" refuse to slick any links... unless it has Apple embedded in it.
WhoTF cares...
This is probably really great for those who own Kindles overseas, where there is no Whispernet coverage.
I wonder if the Kindle can receive books/subscriptions when it's tethered like this.
I wonder what kind of deal they have for the cellular data service that is included in these things?

This is great, reading off of an LCD sucks for me.
Wait... Can you or can't you surf the web on the Kindle as it is right now?
You can.
You can surf on the Kindle 2 as is. But you don't want to. The eInk screen is slow to type, and looks very weird while loading webpages. I went to wikipedia on it, and decided my iPhone is far better for that.
This hack is for those beyond WhisperNet coverage (or like me in Alaska, where it's the slower CDMA, but does still work), or who want to surf on the Kindle faster.
Why you'd want to do that when you have a computer right there is beyond me.
"Why you'd want to do that when you have a computer right there is beyond me."
lol, exactly...haha
it would be cool if it could be used as a secondary monitor (idkwhy), or input device through the tethering...
I'd rather use a tablet or netbook.
another day, another Kindle story. *yawn*
