MSI did a laudatory job this morning baffling us with its
Winki release, but we managed to find an exceptionally kind, English-speaking representative at its
CeBIT booth today who broke it down for us. In short, Winki is MSI's new
instant-on operating system. It's Linux-based, and looks a heck of a lot more elaborate than the
HyperSpace instant-on OS that we toyed with in January. The kicker is that at least for now, this thing is only for desktops, as it's actually built into a small module (shown above) that plugs directly into an MSI motherboard. At first, only select mainboards will come bundled with Winki, but it just might roll out across MSI's entire mobo line. The dame we spoke with wouldn't divulge any details on whether this OS would ever come to its wide-ranging laptop line, but we suspect it will in due time. Winki provides easy access to IM services, Skype and the internet, which is a shortcut to
Doom away from being all the true gamer needs in life, anyway.
Everybody loves a Winki Release, it does usually follow a Winki Hands-On.
Like it
Actually, this look like a variation of the EFI-X module I use to boot into OS X.
vista boots fast enough thx
lulz
Are you serious?
Allow it to open steam and they have a winner.
Another amazing tool for wana-be spies. Open a locked computer up, plug this in, and then start the computer... access the HD... yey.
Screw Windows Sign On.
Windows 7's sleep mode is amazing in of itself (not that other versions of Windows didn't have it, but thus far it has worked flawlessly for me).
Computer falls asleep, all components go to idle and power draw becomes nominal, and then within a second, a touch of a key brings the entire system back up to the very point it was last left on.
Microsoft has already taken care of this issue as far as Im concerned.
Last time I checked, my Windows sleep mode provided me the same thing.
In the end it's just a linux distro thats inferior to any Mac or Windows OS. I mean look how fast asus started pushing out the xp eee netbooks once they started. These OSs are really time wasters in the end of the day and rather deal with the slower to load Vista then a OS that couldn't anything useful for me to do then read my e-mail which is probably spam for 90% of the users anyway lol. Thats my opinion.... Anyone else feel the same??
I guess I view netbooks (using Linux) and instant on OSes as gateways to cloud computing. They are more thin clients, than the conventional PCs and notebooks we have been using for the past few decades. If you view them that way, the fast load OSes make a LOT of sense. If you are viewing them as a desktop/laptop replacement, they really are not up to it.
I REALLY like the idea that others have had, of a dual boot option. Fire up your PC using this, while your main OS loads in the background, and be able to keep this running as a virtual machine.
Now why can not Microsoft put the base code (that hardly ever changes) directly onto a chip as well? Hell you can flash your BIOS to update it the same thing could be done to a small OS chip built right onto the computer.
"Laudatory"? Ugh. Try laudable instead.
didnt read it all but it needs to boot windows in the background while this runs.
needs internet, email, media player, picture viewer and I will buy a msi board.
What the Hell?!
First Ubuntu, now Winki!
What is it with stupid OS names?
I thought Ubuntu came from the African philosophy...
"A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.”
“One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu - the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality - Ubuntu - you are known for your generosity."
"A traveller through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not address themselves. The question therefore is: Are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve?"
thats from wikipedia (I know crappy source but it was fast)
anyways it sounds like a good philosophy for open source code (everyone helping everyone for free which makes life better for everyone)
not sure if thats where its got its name but thats what I always thought.
yeah... they could have called it something like Millenium Edition, XP, Vista or just 7.
EFIX Rip? but for Linux~
Wow.
"The dame we spoke with wouldn't divulge any . . . "
I haven't heard that description of a lady in decades. Are you from Germany?
It seems like it will be bios specific hence the need for io of the dual header. Most newer mobos will boot from a usb device but, would not have a clue as to running 1 device that requires the combining of 2 ports.
My memory is no good. Is this the one that they were talking about requiring an annual subscription?
Something similar could be accomplished for free on any thumb drive if Ubuntu would just implement a minimum install option in their flash drive installation dropdown. The minimum install would be designed for the machine on which it is run in order to minimize or eliminate system hardware scans (time consuming) and would just immediately load drivers for that particular, known machine.
If you want this feature, post the feature request in the Ubuntu forum. Just one person asking for it (me) isn't going to get it for us.
This is all you need.

Then install linux on that and your good to go.
My Asus mobo has an instant on OS already, with no dongle to go bad or lose. Expressgate has a browser, skype, and a few other functions built in.
winki? lol what the f. that's my dog's name. i'm suing for royalties.
lol! Winki eyes on! Not sure if Americans use that term, Look it up.
The word you were looking for is hell.
