Obama taps Julius Genachowski to head the FCC
As widely expected by most folks who speculate on such things, President Obama has now formally nominated lawyer and former venture capitalist Julius Genachowski to head up the Federal Communications Commission and fill the slot vacated by Bush appointee Kevin Martin. Among other things, Genachowski's nomination is particularly notable given his support for net neutrality, which he made quite well known during the Obama campaign in his role as a top technology advisor. Of course, if and when he gets confirmed, he'll also have his hands full with a few other tricky issues, including the widespread rollout of broadband services as a result of the recent stimulus package, and that small matter of the digital TV transition. Hopefully the word shit won't be a censored any longer.
oi! you can't say that on here!
the federal government shouldnt be able to censore any word. our founding fathers made it the responsability of each community to set its own moral standards so the federal government should not be pushing ther own christian values on everyone and let the parents and family decide what their kids can and cant hear and see.
@James: Yes, but broadcasters are using MY airwaves. Granted, they're also YOUR airwaves too.
Basically, this is one of many compelling reasons why over-the-air broadcast television should just be ended. Use the bandwidth as an open-access wireless data infrastructure. We've out-grown the need for 5-6 networks to have exclusive access to all of that bandwidth.
@James. He does support "media-ownership rules that encourage more diversity" according to WSJ, which is just double speak for the fairness doctrine, so don't worry, you will still get your censorship.
@James
parents and family actually sitting down with their kids and ensuring that they watch stuff appropriate for their age level...? MADNESS!
@mithril: This appointment shows exactly where Obama stands on the "Fairness Doctrine". He might not support it by that name, but the principle of the program he absolutely supports. This appointment confirms that.
@ James, this country was designed by men who believed it was their "God Given" responsibility to make us all free. To remove the foundation of our country by eliminating the one who mandated it is complete nonsense. Your also speaking about federalism, which hasn't been the dominant political stance for 150+ years.
"Hopefully the word shit won't be a censored any longer."
Jinx, why should you care if the word sh*t is censored or not? It seems you already possess all the skills necessary to murder the English language without the use of such vulgarity :)
wanna see -my- stimulus package?
republicans think that's pretty excessive too XD
owow... went a little far with that one
Hopefully he paid his taxes.
*generic snarky remark*
im sure that was the firt thing obama asked him.
Generic? lol.
Well,
A third of the appointees haven't. Not just talking cabinent positions, but the undersecretary and adviser positions also.
Democrats don't care about raising taxes because they don't pay them to begin with.

@ First of all, most of the tax issues were minor technicalities, not to even mention that most politically involved people with ties to the government, business, international organizations, non-profit groups, etc have the most complex tax situations possible. Oh, and not to mention that 1/3 of congress both democrats and republicans have similar issues..
I wonder if he owes back taxes just like the other 4 Obama nominees......
Can someone get the ATT + Comcast censoring off me.
that's what she said.
Looks like he will have an opportunity to preside over the Apple/AT&T lawsuit:

The American Public and the FCC need to keep an eye on ISPs. Comcast has been censoring conservative message board posters in my opinion. Because dominant ISP Comcast is a gateway to the internet, they control many eyeballs. Comcast's systematic censoring of conservative opinions on their News & Current Events message boards needs to cease and desist. If Comcast gets tax breaks from local government, then they have a civic, ethical, moral and perhaps legal obligation to provide fair and balanced moderation of their message boards. This type of social engineering is an outrage. Please get involved. Silence is consent. Post a conservative response to a News or Current Events thread here and see for yourself.
