Make no mistake, the
all-black HTC Magic is for real. Separated here at
CeBIT from its glistening white counterpart by an equally white G1, this near-final Magic looked just stellar in its glossy dark coat. We chatted it up with an on-hand representative who confirmed that the handsets on display weren't absolutely finalized, and that when launched exclusively on Vodafone in Europe (you read that correctly), the Voda logo
would be proudly plastered on. He stated that there were no immediate plans for selling an unlocked one in Europe or abroad, but that's just the standard line given when a carrier has yet to get their special toy. He also affirmed that HTC "believed deeply" in Android, and that the world at large would be seeing a lot more where this came from in the near future. Have a look at what these lucky Europeans will soon have access to in the gallery below.
It's not much blacker than most such phones.
Whats with the war of the worlds probe thingy???
security. nevermind
What do you mean? It's blackity-blackity-black, y'all.
I'm black, y'all,
I'm black, y'all,
I'm black and I'm black and I'm black, y'all!
Bliggity, Bliggity Black!!!

Classic movie, almost up there with the original Friday. If you don't get it, then you aren't black enough.
Sweet. When?
Doesn't all of this "no unlocked version available here or here" crap kinda defeat the purpose of an open handset alliance and android?
Locked or Unlocked has nothing to do with the openness of the OS.
The device looks good. Android is a great OS. Only one thing, when will you get rid of that big clock and ugly icons on the main screen? Seriously, you can do much better.
You can do that yourself. Just drop them in the trash can... problem solved.
damn, i thought it's something to do with binding in human flesh and inking in blood, and involve funeral incantations and demon ressurections....
500 identical photos as usual.
Tell me, does this have a larger screen than my G1? It seems so, this looks more like the iphone. It'd help justify the loss of keyboard anyway.
Why no photos of the on-screen keyboard? Oh yeah, because engadget galleries are always ass! :)
I think I was a little harsh on engadget galleries there.
But does anyone else agree, it'd be better for the author to choose a small number (i.e. max 5) of the best photos from his bunch, and upload those in a manner that allows them to all be viewed without clicking "next" and realising you've seen it before but from a 5 degree different angle?
also,
I "hate" my yellow teeth.
No 3.5mm headphone jack...That sucks...Why can't they include that....why do we have to use the usb headphones.....are the guys at HTC frigging dumb or ignorant. ....
It's because they like selling you the adapter...
i dont understand.... besides cupcake (which G1 users are "supposedly" gonna get) what justifies this becoming our G2?
Okay, so doesn't the magic have a version of cupcake on it, since it has to have a virtual keyboard on it? wouldn't that mean they have to be close to releasing an update for a the g1 with at least adding a virtual keyboard? Does anyone know of other features it has on it that the g1 doesn't?
What apps can you use qwerty landscape in for jiminy christmas?!?!? I can't find a straight answer anywhere on the internets. I've only seen it in the browser and this better not be some iphone crap where thats the only place it lives.
Hi All,
In direct reference to my post yesterday again HTC "New Up And Coming Handset" and echoing posts above. Exclusivity to Vodafone being a likelihood "suck". I have direct experience of Vodafone the World's largest mobile Operator and all of it "sucked". Overpriced, poor customer service, and try to terminal a contract when you have the "right to"... well enough said. HTC seem to be solely after the dollar, dollar, money, money angle. Please HTC seriously consider small better providers than Vodafone... you will be grateful you did!
There is alot of public out there...
No 3.5mm jack... bad!
Android... open source good!
Black... get used to it. Carbon black derived pigments are some of the cheapest colourants around... welcome to the "Credit Crunch!"
Black has and always will be the new "Black!" Don't believe the marketeers...
Android,open source, handfull of apps.
iPhone , closed source,18,000 apps.
Which is better for the people ???
I think the G1 users does pretty well without the 17000 fart apps....
good but not better than the palm treo pro
massive fail, just tell me what zero to 1 million will be. Take about 3 years .,LOL what a dee dee deee!!
Shank, not only do you not make sense, but you are referencing one of the unfunniest people on earth. Thus, you fail.
Now that's a sexologist if I ever saw one.
looks cluttery
i say the white one looks better, the black shows too many finger marks on it
A matte finish black would look great IMHO. Seems no one else thinks it would.
I hope T-mobile calls it the GTouch... and NOT the G2.
This is definitely an inferior product to the G1...
And as if the G phones need to get uglier, they chose the worst possible background wallpaper. What the hell?
You don't have to keep the wallpaper. Nor does the phone necessarily come with it.
Ugly icons
Question:
If Android is "Open" why can't anyone just install cupcake on their G1 today? Why can't anyone with a phone capable of handling it install Android easily on there phone this second as easy as they can install Firefox or open source Linux? That's what I thought open source meant.
HTC made another great phone!!!!!!
Holy Wallpaper Hell.
when is it coming to Europe? :D
Does this mean that black is the new black?
1. People can install cupcake on their Android phones, it just is that it's not worth it because it's incredibly buggy.
2. Because the companies the devices come from lock down the phone quite hard, and because of hardware differences I believe (but don't quote me on that)
3. Open source just means the source code is editable by anyone, nothing to do with it's ease of installation or anything capability of being installed on things other than what it was originally written for.
regarding point 3.
isn't the point of open source code though like that anyone can make an android version? And assuming yes they can? From a consumer's perspective if they can make an android version but it's a pain in the ass to install on your phone is it really a big benefit to the consumer. I have neither a g1 or an iphone mind you but if it doesn't translate into much more creative software it seems like the end product of android is the same as iphone.
Looks better in black than white
