RED fans have been getting quite an eyeful this week in the company's forums, as Jim Jannard and crew have been posting all kinds of sneak peeks at the company's latest gear -- including a few configurations of the modular
DSMC EPIC and Scarlet systems in action. The company is also working on super-high-end prime lenses for their cameras that supposedly outperform every other test lens the company has in its possession -- Jannard says "it isn't close." As usual, RED doesn't say when any of this is coming out, but it's definitely enough to make a camera geek's hair stand on end -- check it all out in the gallery.
[Thanks, Jun-Dai]

Yay?
Sweet fancy Moses...
that camera makes me hard
his name is Camera?
Those are some fancy sunglasses. And his name is Red. Can't you read?
Giant attachments... looks pricey..
Didn't you get that memo?
Looks like a gadget freak's wet dream...
Awesome.
Bahhh, looks well built (dirty jobs needs these kinds of cameras).
(kind of looks like a rocket launcher).
So true. If these are so cool, why do they look so uncomfortable and ridgid? Looks like a college lab project. UUUUggly.
holy shite! pretty sure i want.
"kind of looks like a rocket launcher"
That's what she said!
not if ED is involved.
these cameras make me and my Eos 40D feel like scum.
:(
The first company to make a cheap and technically similar copy of anything "red"-like will make a killing.
Red is making a killing because they are making cheap equivalents of established technology (resolution is overhyped just as it is in the digital slr world.... )
Great, but this is really aimed at whom? The prices seem to place this into only the medium format studio guys.
a full kit scarlet (albeit fixed lens) is supposed to be around 3k, which isn't bad considering the canon prosumer hd cam (hx-a1) runs about that much.
san fernando valley
porn industry ;)
most of it is shot in studios in porn producers' homes
I honestly don't care what the this company's cameras do anymore. Their shit has been so hyped and their marketing so cool, I just don't care anymore. Somehow they've gotten me to equate "super cool omg awesome" with their stuff.
Where I work, we just shot all of our national campaign commercials through a group that used RED cameras and I can tell you that the quality of the shots is amazing. They're better than anything I've ever seen with our previous agency. I can't wait for them to come back from production.
Having worked for Oakley at their Foothill Ranch building, I can attest to Jim's swagger. He may be supremely confident, but he's defiantly someone I'd trust to deliver on a promised product.
You worked there?
Dude I envy you so much. That's like my dream.
If you live in southern California, they hire out a lot of jobs through this temp agency Alar. Well, at least they did when I worked there.
They pay well, benefits for full-time employees, NBA regulation indoor court (MJ himself has played on that court), cafeteria, tons of other perks... Christ, I sound like I'm advertising/recruiting for them...
Jubuers, your description of the place with the NBA court and all makes me more excited than even their products! I want to work in a place like that!
RED can be edited on Mac notebooks, you don't need a super expensive rig to edit RED. The NEWEST REDs, the ones that haven't come out yet, will need a crazy computer, but by the time they come out, crazy computer won't be so expensive.
Push it out now Red team. My Nikon lenses are ready.
It looks super bright in that room, it's a good job he's wearing his Oakleys!
Gotta love the peripheral product placement.
RED has alway shown a lot of promise, some great lenses at decent prices will push it over the top.
that red shirt is so dead. doesn't he know he's holding a decepticon?
THAT'S A HHUUUGGEEEE BITCHH!!
i wannntt it :P
That's what she said!
Trevor... That's not exactly true. My fiance is currently editing a feature film shot on a Red One and we had to get a high-end mac pro to edit the footage. dual quad-cores, 12 gigs of ram, newest radeon video card, and 7 TERABYTES of had drives... For one feature film... Files are going to be even bigger with the new Epic. Also, ALL of the RED proprietary software, REDscene, REDalert, etc. is beta stuff and working with it can be a biotch.

:D:D:D seriously dude, I laughed so hard... :D:D:D
Gotta get me one of these.
If you cannot afford the Scarlet when it is released, you can use your filmmaking skills and try to win one! sKarlets.com has launched and along with the launch is the announcement of "The Digital Age Short Film Competition." The grand prize...The 2/3 Scarlet Fixed Camera! sKarlets is a Red Digital Cinema Community, that has lots of fun user tools, including an awesone HD Screening Room to share your work.

Is your fiance editing the DIRECT raw RED files? Even REDs webpage states that all you need is
Intel 2.0 dual core or better
ATI graphics card is ideal however I have run tests on NVIDIA in the new MBP and MacPro and it seems to work fine.
OSX 10.4 or newer.
7200 RPM Hard Drive
By stating REDCine and REDAlert are a bitch, it tells me that you ARE editing the RAW files, why not just use Final Cut Pro and save yourself the trouble? I personally have shot on the REDOne and edited it on a Macbook Pro, so I know it is possible.
And like I said, Epic is a beast that hasn't been released yet.
How long can one man keep showing us stuff that no one uses?
I predict Red to be bankrupt in the near future. They are investing so much money in this stupid modular system that someone is going to just buy the necessary pieces for each camera. Or not even their modular system at all. Need to shoot video? You're gonna buy just the things you need for video. Need to shoot stills? You are gonna buy all the stuff for stills. No one is going to waste their time switching shit around from video to still, still to video, 2d to 3d, steady cam to handheld. Pro photographers don't even take enough time to switch lenses, they just buy two bodies. Let alone the normal professional isn't going to have enough time swap stuff around from video to still to 3d etc etc. They are just going to buy what they need for each. And when they do that, they are going to buy Nikon, Canon for stills for their hundreds of lens choices, and probably a RED camera for video.
so who's to say people won't buy several red systems in different configurations to do exactly what you suggest? i think that's the point.
I'M IN IT TO WIN IT!!!
Oh, wait...sorry...I thought this was one of those Engadget Recession Antidote posts. Damn. I was already clearing out space in my gadget closet for this.

I'll take the man in the photo. Hot!
are those raybans ??
I think these RED cameras will be phenomenal... but too bad they won't be affordable. Extremely high-end hardware for an extremely high-end price.
is $3,000-10,000 High end for you? for 3-6 times better than HD?
:D
$3000-$10,000? Oh no! I have that laying around on a regular basis, ready to drop on unneeded camera equipment, lol...
Are you serious? Uh yeah, that's a LOT for most, regardless of what it does. They're planning on charging upwards of $5000 for the lenses alone. High end photography is not a cheap hobby, my friend!
Ohhh its even in Rebel XT Silver!
