All Circuit City stores closing permanently on March 8th
To an icon in the consumer electronics retail space, we wave goodbye. And for the hordes of employees already / soon to be looking for new uniforms elsewhere, we empathize. Circuit City has just announced that on March 8th, all of its stores will lock up for the last time. Granted, some locations have already shut their doors in permanent fashion due to stock depletion, but regardless of leftover wares, March 8th is the end of the line for the laggards. We'd say you might want to stop by your local outlet to catch any last-last-minute sales, but even at a penny, you're not going to want that open-box 4MB SD card.

comparing Best Buy and Newegg isn't really fair. Newegg is just a "garage" in the low rent warehouse district... Best Buy pays for nice displays and retail shopping space. Newegg also drop ships a lot of stuff... they don't keep inventory, Best Buy buys stuff up front, drives it to a store, and hopes people come get it. There's considerably more risks that Best Buy is taking versus Newegg.
If you can find a good deal at Newegg take it. But even then, you wait 2-3 days for shipping, that is an opportunity cost.... you walk out of the store at Best Buy, better calculate the overnight shipping to compare the services being offered between the two companies.
My attitude is that I buy things when the price is what I need. If the price online is worth waiting a week for my item, OK. But usually the price at Best Buy is only marginally more than Newegg after shipping and time constraints are figured in. I also don't buy "bottom feeder" stuff anymore, I stopped buying "white box" computer parts years ago.. the retail box has better support and I think you get a better product because the manufacture's name is on it and they don't want to see it again. The "no white box" policy ruled out the computer shows and cheap storefronts as well as most online products that are "off spec" versions to justify the lower price.
Went to the local Circuit City yesterday saw they had a camcorder Sony HDR-SR10 on the shelf for 540, not really bad if it were new. But instead of new I spot a sign saying all camcorders are display models only and you are buying what they had out for everyone to use... Sorry Circuit City but you can buy one brand spanking new direct from Sony for 649, and if you wanted a refurb one direct from Sony its only 589. Either of those options would beat the socks off of a well used one that was out for everyone to use and doesn't come with a box, papers, or cables. Or you coudl move over to Dell and buy it for 549 free shipping, no tax probably cheaper than that used crap Circuit City was passing off as a 40% off sale.
Saw a Samsung pn50A650 one of two televisions they still had. Broken stand, missing remote, no box, what they had been showing as a display for sometime. They wanted 1349 for this used plasma with a broken stand and missing items. I was like what the hell best buy has this bad boy for 1599 no tax and no shipping brand spanking new in the box all accessories and best of all a stand that isn't broken.
I am glad to see them close up but sad for the employees.
newegg. thats the only place i get my electronicals
I never had a problem with either CC or BB *if* it was something on sale, otherwise, I don't bother. I bought a Sony Bravia KDL-32XBR6 from BB last week for $800, Amazon had it at $750, but then again, I had the TV in 5 minutes and home that day, and it's a sweet TV. If things weren't on sale, CC always seemed higher to me than BB though.
There are certain things I would never buy from BB, like computer cables, just go over to newegg or monoprice for much, much less.
While I've NEVER been a fan of Circuit City, I got an XBox Arcade Jasper for $130 and a 120GB XBox hard drive for $80 a few weeks ago. I consider this worth their going out of business. Yes I'm a scavenger of the dead and dieing.
I love how the desperate scumbags that wouldn't spend a dime at circuit city when it was open because they were either cheap assholes or just broke assholes, scurried like degenerate pieces of shit looking for deals like a pedophile looking for a 10yr old girl to rape and couldn't find one...I was glad the company was going out of business so I could finally tell you assholes who made my life a living hell for 3 yrs to go fuck yourselves when you wanted a mark-down because there was no circuit city anymore, just a liquidation company that didn't care about you and lied about what discount you were SUPPOSEDLY getting... Yep, I worked there... The discounts at the liquidation were bullshit and even still you parasites came in wave after wave consuming the products all of us who are jobless now purposely broke because we were out of business and you couldn't return it...enjoy trying to return our garbage back now...we appreciate the business...just a little too late... To all the people that truly felt bad and apologized when we shut down, I can honestly say we appreciate your sentiments and were sorry that you now have to go to a local competitor that will only ignore you and treat you more like a dollar sign than a person because there really isn't competition or because they hire lazy students that just don't care. For all of the good people that came into circuit city before it shut down that were treated badly by some associate...we are sorry...for every decent hardworking person there is, there's always one or two assholes behind them to screw everything up...blame it on mismanagement...we truly tried.
I don't care if you guys "flame" me on this forum. I won't reply. I just really needed to get that off my chest.
On Black Friday of 2007 I went in with some buddies to buy some deals and asked one of the reps why they weren't running all of the checkout lanes. He said, "You choose to shop today." I put down what I had been waiting in line to buy and walked out. Haven't been back since.
The liquidation prices have been worse than their normal prices which used to be pretty good compared to other comparable retailers.
