Cydia developer planning independent iPhone App Store, others planning jailbreak service, adult app store
Looks like the jailbroken iPhone app scene is about to get seriously interesting -- not only is Cydia is going from package repository to full-fledged app store, a new jailbreaking service called Rock Your Phone is set to launch, and there's a planned adults-only app store. Details are light on the others, but the Cydia Store will offer developers a distribution alternative to Apple's official App Store unencumbered by that pesky SDK agreement and approval process -- are you ready for commercial fart apps with direct hardware access? Of course, users will have to jailbreak their phones for the Cydia Store or any of its wares to run, and that's slightly controversial at the moment, given Apple's opposition to the EFF's proposal to exempt jailbreaking from the DMCA. It's up in the air how the legal situation will play out, but honestly, we can't say we're surprised that devs locked out of Apple's store are finding ways to compete -- the iPhone app market is entirely too lucrative to ignore. We'll see how Apple responds when the Cydia Store and these others go live; we can't help but feel the winning move would be to relax the SDK restrictions and get all these devs playing on the same team.

Adult app store you say? Tell me more, I just became very interested in this phone...
iPhone gray market here we come?
This could be interesting...as long as the Russian Mob stays out of it :P
This is just more gravy for Apple, it will help with iPhone adoption the same way piracy helped Windows adoption.
It might hurt App Store sales a little, but you still have to buy an iPhone to jailbreak, right?
We know where you live. :|
How many phones have the same aftermarket resale value as an iphone?
I sold a broken iPhone for $190 on Ebay.
I've seen broken screened 4GB's go for over $200.
The amaizing thing about the iPhone is, if you unlock it, its automatically got a large residual value. And unlocking is FREE.
@Flashpoint
Uhm, any phone with a serious carrier subsidy has great resale value. DUH!
same situation with PSP. people scrambling to hack it and get free games.
so.... I was going to jailbreak my ipod and got to the site and apple has banned it? is there still a way to do it? i have enjoyed reading all the post here and hope i get some answers. thanks a lot Alice
Woooow. I have a blog post about this publishing in 30 minutes... http://cli.gs/e4h46e
30 mins too late
really good opinion piece
Yay! I may just have to jail break my phone again!
if we could have all these people focus on unlocking baseband 02.30.03, then I'd be a happy camper.
Repped
Don't have one, but love this idea. Good luck!
Would be nice if there were no restrictions on the Apple App Store but that'll never happen. Can you see Apple selling an application that allows you to touch a bra off a woman via the touch screen then shake the phone to make her boobs bounce?
Sure, it would sell billions but Apple wouldn't allow that.
tell me that was sarcasm because i have an app that does that. iJiggles. it's a barrel-o-fun.
A strip-the-girl, shake-her-boobies, and bring-her-to-climax-with-your-finger app already exists. Of course you have to jailbreak to get it; the demo is at ufook.com ...warning, not safe for work.
ahh, Kris sums up what's wrong with our society in one swift sentence. Sheesh - go back down to surfing porn in your Mom's basement.
You know, there are more important things in life than money and porn.
I always thought that the iPhone's accelerometer was just waiting for an iWank application...
damn... not even a 32 GB iphone will have enough space now... we'll need terabytes!
I hope the new Cydia will be more reliable than the current one. It's very annoying when a download times out and you still have to restart the springboard, even when you didn't actually install anything. I eventually gave up on installing Clippy and went with hClipboard.
I just can't wait for the adult app store.
Awesome. now to find my ipod which has like an inch of dust and like firm ware 1.1.4 or do something with it. :)
I myself would rather not have apple running the app store, they seem to greedy in some of their moves while doing just enough to keep the general public from getting pissed.
I am affraid about this move, as up until this point Apple hasn't really tried to stop jailbreaking. This move could force Apple to make the iPhone much harder if not impossible to jail break.
Apple has always known that folks do it, but other then the fluff in the press a few weeks ago havent really dont anything to stop the practice.
I just wish Apple would let us use programs like Winterboard, Boss Prefs and a few others then for many of us there would be no reason to jailbreak.
Another thing is everytime Apple comes out with a firmware upgrade its a pain in the butt to re jailbreak the phone then download all your apps again from Cydia.
If Apple really cared about Jailbreaking, they could easily make it so every single sync with itunes (not firmware upgrade) would check and disable your phone if its been unlocked.
I think Apple likes the hacking. It drives up the price of new iPhones as well as used iPhones and gives them mass appeal and residual value.
Alot of people hate AT&T but want iPhone... unlock it, put it on ebay and suddenly people are willing to pay $190 + 20 shipping for an iPhone with a cracked screen or a broken sleep button.
I broke a 4GB and tried to go for a 3G. They told me $400 and that I didn't qualify for upgrade because I bought my iPhone 4GB unlock on ebay. There is virtually no way to beat this unless you qualify for upgrade or steal one. There is no exception with an iPhone made at AT&T or Apple. If you unlock your phone and it breaks, you're out of whatever you paid and your STILL STUCK WITH AT&T's high ass bullshit prices unless you pay to terminate your contract. They've got you by the balls.
But if you have read any of what the iPhone Dev Team has posted over the last couple years the jailbreak and unlock on the current 2 series phones and the first generation Touch for that matter is not the soft ware. The have found a defect in the hardware, so to stop them unless one is not paying attention and indiscimently applying updates Apple will have to posses your phone.
Is this going to be something people are comfortable with buying from? I mean, who would have your credit card number when you use this store?
Joe H, precisely the point! Would you trust that adult only store and put your credit card details through it? Not to mention you'll need to get out more if you really need that adult store. And who's to say these won't start a mess of iPhone trojans with pop-ups (or a notification) every 15mins reminding you your favorite porn site. As much as I don't fancy Apple's dictatorship over the approval process, at least I know the stuff coming out are quite safe. I can't say the same about Cydia. If anything, it discourages me to JB my iphone.
I think the best way would be to intergrate it with Paypal somehow, but that is a very good point, i would trust Apple more than unknown devs however nice they are.
HUMPS, I'm not sure how Cydia is handling credit transactions, but the adult store uses DHD Media for payment processing. DHD has been in business over 10 years and safeguards your credit info for maximum privacy. The adult site itself does not. There are no popups.
Tom S, PayPal won't touch adult.
How is that any different from paying for any of those using a computer online? You only use trusted sources and know who you're buying from before you fork over your digits.
loving cydia so much because of their new store, but to be honest, i would have waited to make the announcement until we knew where everyone stands on the jailbreak legality issue. this kinda gives apple a good reason to push that jailbreaking is illegal. its their platform, and while it was just homebrew, and not about the profit, it was more about the ability to use the tech to its fullest. now that its for profit, apple is going to say something along the lines of "my platform is being used to rob me of my profits" which will hold up much better in any court.
Exactly. A store is just what Apple needs to get all of this stuff shut down.
I can imagine the adult apps creating pop-ups, spyware, and other malicious stuff. Someone puts up a free adult app and everyone cheap guy downloads it only to have their browser go nuts telling you things like your Nigerian uncle died and he wanted to give you $21.6 million.
Normally I wouldn't be one to root for the 'breaker' party but in this case, GODSPEED CYDIA! KNOCK THE APPLE TREE DOWN A FEW INCHES!!!
This won't hurt Apple. It will only help them.
#1 you still need to BUY an iPhone to get at the unsigned apps which may not even work perfectly with your phone.
#2 Apple will not cover your insurance if you use unsigned apps. Which means people with iPhones not into hackery WON'T GO NEAR THEM and will instead continue using signed app store apps.
#3 If you damage your phone and it can't be repaired, you probably end up buying yet another one...
I maybe foaming at the mouth a little.
When I bought my Touch I was expecting the App Store to make it the 2nd coming of the Newton. And what i got was an ipod that has a really great wifi browser that's awkward to type on with a few (small few) fun games. I was really hoping for themes, a full-screen keyboard, podcatcher, etc.
I bought a blackberry this week, which doesn't have an arbitrary, inconsistent app store (well, it will have a potentially well-moderated store soon, but it's optional). It has alot of what I guess I really needed, but the browser options are still a bit flaky.
.... now, how can I turn this thing into a hotpot.....
I guess we should of all seen this coming.....I'm not really upset though cause people have a right to be paid for their work if they so desire.
Awesome lol!
"Rock Your Phone" should be called Brick Your Phone
And when one of these Apps breaks or bricks your iPhone, will Cydia pay to fix it? Will they cover it like Apple does? Will they reimburse you, since it was their unlicensed App approval process that led to your problems?
Nope.
I'll stick with the official App Store. You can all be edgy and mad hackerish if you want.
Sweet! Now if only I could get my phone to rehack after the last update. Stupid hack...
good stuff
Jailbreaking voids warranty, forces more people to pay full price fir iPhone replacement . Equals more money for apple!!
Good! Now I may be able to get Sirius on my phone since Apple denied Starplyr
Yesss!!!people will hand over credit card info to unlicensed , jailbreaking, warranty voiding companies . I love this!!!!!!paying scam artist,.,.LOL!
Ifap.to
Best free iPhone porn site,.tell me what u think???
The question is...
Would people still want to hold your phone after they learnt that you use the iphone adult app store?
this is bad for the devs and bad for apple rep with developers. what you don't get is that iphone is sexy for devs because they can profit from it. the minute cydia will start selling stuff people will pirate it and everything will go to hell.
it was nice while it lasted, I should have sold the app I made instead of giving it for free. oh well.
