Cydia developer planning independent iPhone App Store, others planning jailbreak service, adult app store
Looks like the jailbroken iPhone app scene is about to get seriously interesting -- not only is Cydia is going from package repository to full-fledged app store, a new jailbreaking service called Rock Your Phone is set to launch, and there's a planned adults-only app store. Details are light on the others, but the Cydia Store will offer developers a distribution alternative to Apple's official App Store unencumbered by that pesky SDK agreement and approval process -- are you ready for commercial fart apps with direct hardware access? Of course, users will have to jailbreak their phones for the Cydia Store or any of its wares to run, and that's slightly controversial at the moment, given Apple's opposition to the EFF's proposal to exempt jailbreaking from the DMCA. It's up in the air how the legal situation will play out, but honestly, we can't say we're surprised that devs locked out of Apple's store are finding ways to compete -- the iPhone app market is entirely too lucrative to ignore. We'll see how Apple responds when the Cydia Store and these others go live; we can't help but feel the winning move would be to relax the SDK restrictions and get all these devs playing on the same team.

actually he's right, there are a lot of cydia apps that cost money (swirlymms and bitesms come to mind right off the bat). they are very useful apps that you can only use once your phone has been jailbreaked.
Ok.. didn't know that, I thought you pay through other means. anyway, using a jailbroken platform to sell stuff is a bad idea to begin with. I understand that its not exactly like stealing the machine, but it is subverting the use of the software, even if not directly - it gives rise to people with less-than-honest intentions to steal.
Certain apps from Cydia are free demos with the option to buy the full version included. Those are generally programs that extend the iPhone's hardware, like the video recorder and the camera extensions.
It seems like alot of the people posting have never jailbroken their phones let alone read the replying statement made to applefrom the EFF about "bending their software".
Adult app store= whatever, if it does start to look shady no one is gonna buy shit from the place.
Most apps that u pay for in cydia are done through paypal already. Plus no one says you have to jailbreak. The response from saurik was that he wants to give people options and the freedom to choose those options.
Check out www.irealsms.com and check this messaging app out.You download it through cydia, then pay through the site or paypal. It has landscape texting, autorotate, forwarding texts, deletion of individual sent or received texts, reply in any app wihout closing it, save certain texts as a template plus more. This replaces the shitty options the main SMS app doesn't have. Apple should have put this in their from the start right??
Mms, copy paste, turn by turn gps, the ability to customize your phone, and apps like the one mentioned above are available only through jailbreaking your damn phone. Sucks right?? Are the risks worth it when you pay so much? Shouldn't apple have put this in already, well they haven't, so until then you either wait or get it through jb.
This is what the EFF talks about. The this type of allegedly bending or breaking the rules according to apple, is what fosters innovation. They said when we buy a car they don't seal the hood shut so you can't work on it. You have an option to put stuff into it whether that stuff voids your warranty or not. If you read the response from the eff, you will why this is an issue against peoples rights.
So for all of you people who are scared of what you don't know, and think all cydia apps have been free (like your buddy shul up there^) and this is some new thing, how is it differant from Handango? You think they will let shit run wild in cydia, if so then it already would have been, wouldn't you agree. We would already see bad shit happening to cydia. People hear app store in cydia and they start guessing about what's gonna happen, when they haven't even seen what's been going in cydia in the first place. Nevertheless like engadget said, either way it can have an effect on apples restrictions in their own app store. So thanks to those devs, we can win either way.
This sounds great, the first app they need in an uncensored version of PhotoSwap with no report feature.
u know they have these amazing things called pre-paid credit cards, and paypal has one time use throw away numbers
for a bunch of techies not much common sense with that said if its jailbroke its free the reason people jailbreak because they dont want to pay for shit they may use once or for the novelity until the next novelty comes along the internets is free
Oh please. Do we really need MORE porn in the world?
who wants to buy a entire business based in a vulnerability that can be closed anytime?.
iPorn!
So you want me to turn my credit info over to people who have already shown they don't mind bending or possibly even breaking the law? People who want to make money off of Apple's work? Yeah no thanks.
I was going to say something, but what's the point.
Apple is in the business of selling hardware, and providing a system for others to create applications that are evaluated and approved. A very sharp business model, that leverages the abilities of others, which will always be The Judas Phone.
Steer clear, there are better systems, minus the gloss.
It cannot be closed, ever, ever. When the new iphone comes out, with new hardware, it will be hard to jailbreak it at first, but do some research into the dfu vulnerability used to hack the iphone, its on a hardware level, cannot be fixed with software. 2G and 3G are completely pwned, as they say.
Check here for step by step guide on how to install & purchase applications from Sauriks Cydia Store.

Many of the SDK Restrictions, especially direct hardware access, are what keep the operating system portable. It doesn't want any developer DEPENDING on a particular piece of hardware. It's incredibly shortsighted to think otherwise.
Other restrictions are just plain silly, but those are the bargaining chips. It gives Apple, Inc. an area on which they can later bend and still keep all the restrictions they REALLY want. Any longtime Apple watcher can tell you this is par for the course.
Expect Device "2,1" to begin the fragmentation of the Jailbreak App market, and "2,2" to fragment it further. July to September 2009 will be an Apple, Inc. hatefest. Claims of Apple purposefully "bricking apps" (as if that phrase makes sense) will be all the rage.
(Remember how "The Dev Team" wiped everyone's unique identifier and it took a munitny in the team [Thanks Erica!] to admit the blame and fix the error? No. That's because the official answer is "Apple purposefully bricked your phone". The "Elite Team" fixed the real problem and gets no credit, all in the name of hating on Apple.)
All popular pieces of hardware have had a healthy hacking community. Apple traditionally takes a "blind eye" approach until someone starts trying to make money off of Apple's trademarks or copyrighted material, which (as far as I can tell) no one is.
This is no different than the FrankenMac and & Hackintosh communities that have existed for decades. Sonnet is still in business, selling CPU upgrades for PPC Macs.
No hacking community has ever overgrown the parent company. Not the Altair, the Atari, the C64, the Amiga... not even the PC. Traditional PC manufacturers crush tiny hobbiest builders every single day. Unless you're running iPhone OS on an Android, I doubt Apple will care what the jailbreak community does.
The iphone users worried about giving their credit cards to Saurik can relax. He uses PayPal or some other 3rd party
credit card merchant. He won't get your credit card, but the 3rd party merchant will, and they are pretty well regulated

LoL just means somebody's going to buy this and give it away for free
and then everyone will be able to jailbreak the 2g for good now .......
