Good segment, HIgh Five! lol
The Woz looked great on "Dancing with the Stars" because he's a big guy and put on an even bigger performance. His smile was infectious. I seriously LOL'd. "Late Night" however took a hit with the whole Palm Pre segment. Don't get me wrong, I'm in love with the Palm Pre and planning to get one. But during the segment I swear Jimmy looked up at the camera and at the same time saw his director trying to tell him to move on because the show was dying and the ratings were plunging. Why can't Jimmy read cue cards like he did at the SNL anchor desk back in the day? I sure hope he learns to relax again and just goes with the flow instead of worrying about the weight of NBC on his shoulders every night. I would rather have the goofy Jimmy back that could actually stand to mess up than the Jimmy we're seeing right now that is way to ridged and checking himself constantly. Seriously, if you really read these posts...go out there today and have fun and think f**k the ratings. How often have Leno and Letterman taken jabs at their own networks and their ratings? Of course don't forget to yank on your ear during the show tonight to acknowledge to us that you really do read the blog.
High Five!
Nice job.
I agree. That was absolute hilarious, and very much awesome. Top 5 things of the segment...
5.) With all the excitement I'm assuming, you forgot about the keyboard until Jimmy mentioned in. Your reaction was priceless, you were like ''Oh yeah, it also has a keyboard!''
4.) When typing Jim Fallon in the phone itself, Jimmy was like sure, you can call me Jim. That was pretty funny.
3.) When referencing to the keyboard compared to the on-screen keyboard to the iPhone, you were like when you make mistakes, when you often make mistakes. I guess you were referring to everyone who has ever had a typo with the iPhone, but it was hilarious when you said that specifically only to Jimmy. Haha.
2.) When Jimmy wanted to give you a high five, you completely ignored him. I don't know if it was intentional, but Jimmy reaction was like "Oh man.''
**drum roll**
1.) When Jimmy had the phone, and said something like I don't want to break it. You were like of course, let a professional handle it. THAT WAS HILARIOUS!
Basically, it was awesome. Great Job JOSH!
I like how they invited the Palm pre to ebe on the show, and it decided to bring along Topolsky.
Why is topolshky slouched over? why doesnt he ever look at the camera nor the audience??
josh should consider being on tv, maybe get his own show on G4.
and then he could do a special where he invites the editor of GIZ
just make sure all your tech doesnt have IR ports :P
I tried to hang in to see you, but I couldn't hang in though all the suck that was happening on the show. Seriously, the green screen thing w/ Amanda Peet was awful and unfunny. I'll check out your segment here in a bit :)
to be fair conan sucked his first 2 or 3 seasons
@ Deeznuts420
I said this on the thread yesterday:
Jimmy Fallon was terrible the whole time he was on SNL so why should we think he's gonna get any better with his talk show?
Get a DVR
i laughed when the green screen reel went to black and they were expecting a Hawaiian setting
Bacon - that's your opinion. I thought he was a great cast member of SNL. That's my opinion.
I didn't watch last night, but I did catch a little bit of Fallon's show on Friday and it was painfully uncomfortable watching him so clearly out of his depth.
I gotta say Josh did a great job. He looked and sounded comfortable in front of the audience and the cameras, was even a little funny in a big geeky way.
Maybe a star is born, a new geek zookeeper. At least the gadgets won't crap on the desk.
I wanna see robots!
I agree the green screen kind of sucked, but if you would have stuck around there was actually a hilarious skit about US treaties and the interview with Josh was funny as well. I've never been a fan of Jimmy Fallon, but if you give it a real shot, his show is actually pretty funny (well, not the first couple, but the last two at least have been good). I was ready to hate it as a long time Conan fan, but now I definitely think they made a good choice with Jimmy.
I thought Jimmy Fallon was 10x more awkward than our geeky overlord ever thought about being. Awkwardness isn't a particularly good quality to have when you are a talk show host either, so I hope he can overcome it.
Good job on the interview though, Joshua.
I didn't see the whole show but from the clip it just seems like a lot of it just Fallon being new to it all. It'll probably get a lot smoother over time.
And the humor of the sketches and such are largely the work of a whole staff of writers, so it's not just all on Fallon.
To be fair Conan sucked every season. But I digress... The pre was awesome!!!
Why didn't Josh show off the multi touch? When he went to Wiki he zoomed in by double tapping. Just thought it would have been cool to demo that on national TV
There's no real need to demo multi-touch, because it's not really a feature anymore. Since the iPhone has become so popular, multi-touch is something that people just expect to work. (For example, no one gets excited about the iPhone supporting multi-touch anymore, but they are disappointed when they learn that the G1 or the BB Storm lack the feature.)
The way Josh explained the Pre was that it's like the iPhone, but better at multitasking. If someone says "like the iPhone", they pretty much mean that it supports multi-touch and that you tap the screen a lot. Since Jimmy Fallon's desk is not the best place to be giving exhaustive tech demos, you can't hit every bullet-point. Josh was right on to highlight the "cards", which is the Pre's main point of differentiation from the iPhone.
Oh noes! He only used one finger to zoom! The horror!
I'm wondering if Palm told him not to demo it for some reasons. Maybe they are working with Apple's lawyers and don't want to promise something to the general public that may not be there in the final product???
I second the "not a big deal." I love that the multi-touch is there, and maybe it's good to show both, but for one-handed operation a thumby double tap is more cozy.
Seriously, the dude's name is "?uestlove"?
Anyway, good to see that Palm is willing to keep the Pre out in the open and get some free publicity while they're at it.
yes the dudes name is questlove.
He's part of "The Roots"....great hip-hop band.
Yes thats his name. What rock have you been living under? Does your moms basement count as a rock?
Wow...just wow. Not knowing who ?uestlove is...or The Roots? geeez
Full: Bro The R ?uestlove
AKA: ?uest, Quest, Questo, the Incredible Shrinking ?uestlove (not sure if he startd back eating meat though).
I think, even though Hub left, he should play for the late night band.
Dudes, relax. I've heard of and heard The Roots, but happen to be more into classical and jazz. I've even heard of Questlove, but never seen it in writing as "?uestlove."
I wouldn't say I'm missing it.
the thing is, bob, it's not that i'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime. So where's the motivation?
I'm just not going to go.
[insert random Office Space quote for high ranking]
I believe you have my pre...The ratio of people to pre's is too big.
Great job on the show!
I thought they had a really good rapport. Maybe he'll be on again soon. Maybe like a regular guest.
So, is Engadget on an NDA!? Where's the review of the longer-than-anyone-external-to-Palm hands-on!?
There's nothing to review yet -- this unit was the same as the ones at CES (which we've written about extensively). We're waiting on the finished version!
What happened to highest ranked?
he did justice to all the gadget nerds out there.
whether Jimmy Fallon can not suck remains to be seen, though.
Very nice, Jimmy fallon really loves his geek side, he just likes to hide it like most.
I can't wait to get one of these when my contract runs out.
I wish Andy would have stayed around to help Conan. He really sucks at guest interviews. And Fallon is struggling even when his close friends and co-stars are on. Maybe you should have done the Pre thing on Craig Ferguson and had a bigger audience!!! Now he's a riot - even without guests...
I recorded last night's show just for this segment. Personally, i just don't find Fallon funny. at all. He wasn't funny on SNL. He's not funny in his movies, and he wasn't funny last night. I wish NBC could have found someone better to replace Conan. that way i would have 2 funny late night shows instead of 1.
To be fair, it took Conan a while to find his legs too. He was pretty bad with the guest segments in the beginning, especially when it was obvious that he wasn't particularly interested in the guest. In the early days of Conan, it was Andy Richter that really saved the day, IMHO.
I'm getting the same vibe from Fallon. He and Josh had a great rapport, and the same was true with Tina Fey, for obvious reasons. Maybe he'll find his groove, but I wouldn't expect it to happen overnight.
Maybe Jimmy needs an Ed McMahon/Richter sidekick (or get more interactive with the band a la Dave and Paul).
Damn... I just realized I'm a late night TV junkie. My life is worthless.

Is Engadget hiring?
Free publicity? I wonder if there was some sort of a tri-way deal between Palm-engadget-LNWJF/NBC...
Yeah, why are they doing this? There's absolutely no way Palm isn't paying for a little extra coverage.. It's kind of hard to believe that the final review on the Pre and upcoming comparisons aren't going to be blatantly biased when they're obviously in bed with each other.
I wish Engadget could make enough money elsewhere so stunts like this weren't necessary.
