T-Mobile G1 available at Amazon for $97

If you've been hoping a deal on the T-Mobile G1 was imminent, well then you're in luck: Amazon's got a sweet deal going now, whereby you can grab one for $97! Well, you'll have to be a new customer, and you'll have to sign up for a new, two-year contract, but it's still worth thinking about if you really have a hankering. You might wanna pick up a copy of the G1 for Dummies while you're there, too. Oh, by the way -- the white version in the photo? Just for show. Amazon's only offering the black one for this deal.

please still be here in 35 days =]
nice price... wow...
(hey mr. wolf ;)...)
Launch of the G2 imminent?
Isn't the G2 surely on its way to the US sooner or later? I mean they will have to Battle New iPhone and Palm Pre right?
Why not wait for that one?
Is the G2 really that much of a hardware upgrade? I would personally prefer the physical keyboard on the G1.
Of course, it doesn't matter in my case, since neither will support 3G where I live, but it might matter to someone.
The only real difference is that the G2 is a little thinner since it lacks the keyboard. In a lot of respects it's a downgrade.
cause it's the exact same phone, both hardware and software, minus the keyboard...
I highly doubt that the G2 is an "upgrade" to the G1, its just the second handset in a long line of Android based phones to come. I'd expect to see both sitting next to each other at the tmo stores for the forseeable future.
Want a real keyboard? G1.
Want a thinner phone and don't care about real keyboard? G2.
Thanks for the feedback dudes.

Engadget you trickters!.....making me think that they have the white one on sale..... >.
They do. If you search for "t-mobile g1" you'll be able to click on the white version and have the same $97 deal.
they do have the white one on sale, go check for yourself
New customers always get the good deals. Hopefully the "G2" will be available when it's time to renew later this year.
I beg to differ! Old customers get awesome deals too! I now have unlimited on my service on 2 lines, for $89 total. I'm grandfathered on unlimited messaging for $9 and I have my G1 Plan (sigh, couldn't keep my Tmobile Internet) for $25. That's ~$123 for unlimited talk and text on 2 lines and unlimited internet on 1 line. I call that an awesome deal :)
Apart from keeping it for natural disasters and guests, I could just do away with my home phone service....
I grandfathered in my $39.99/month for 1500 anytime minutes, which is practically unlimited for me.
My total is $67.00/month including taxes and unlimited internet.
What is so exciting about that? I live in Poland, and I just bought G1 for myself, for 1 zloty(and that is approx. 0.30$), with a 12 month contract, paying 125 zlotys per month(approx. 40$) and for my unlimited internet access I pay 50 zlotys(approx. 12$) per month. Why are the calling and data plans so expensive in the USA?
Because we're in the USA. Everything is more expensive here. It's a Free Market with a hint and touch of price fixing behind the scenes.
because we subsidize your healthcare system by paying too much for drugs. hey, wait a minute....
In the UK, G1 contracts give the phone for free on a £35 (USD $48) per month for two years plan. Or 10% less from T-Mobile online...
er my girlfreind just got a free G1, in white on t-mobile with an 18month contract, and a free nintendo wii for £35 a month... You have to pay for phones in the US on new contracts?
Two-year contracts don't seem to really exist in Canada anymore unless you feel like paying out the ass for a phone :(. I'd like to see the G1 or the Magic make its way to Canada.
Rogers is everywhere, everything, all the time. I don't get that, really. That would be like having the old AT&T control my life. Ugh. I'd hate that.
No thanks.
The deal seems to be live for the Bronze and White models as well.
In fact, the black is more expensive that the other two by 22¢
Wirefly.com has the same deal.
You get an 8GB microSD card with wirefly as well.
Anybody knows if AT&T is coming out with an Android phone, my N95 barely works and I don't want an iPhone.
Never. iPhone os is king!!
Ah man, if only I was on my own contract...
Oh well.
Does this mean I can get the difference between what I paid and this price refunded? :-7 And yes, I already know the answer to that question. I just had to ask.
G1 android is so dead and overhyped!! Proving thta open source is now mediocre compared to iPhone closed source ,20000 apps n counting. Even developers agree. Death by iPhone!!!!!
Don't feed the trolls.
well Im telling you now and have been saying this for months in advance that G1 cupcake were all talking about will be release the day or shortly before or after that G2 will be released. So maybe the G2 isnt a upgrade as we might think it will be, just no QWERTY on the new one, but there not gonna let G1 users feel alone there gonna get that cupcake with that onscreen QWERTY and number buttons. its gonna be a huge update on the G1 but will be worth it and will be exactly the same software as the G2. Same phone to, just the G2 is skinnier and no keyboard. slightly larger screen
I love the G1 thou, dont own one...YET...waitin to see an outcome thou, its quiet before the storm and the storm will be in the summer. You'll probably start hearin shit in May, hopefully sooner!
Thanks, but no thanks.
The G1 is cool, but a two-year contract + a $25 monthly plan increase is regrettably just unjustifiable.
the deal is good for the white and bronze one.
FYI, If you print out the amazon page with the price, T-Mobile will honor it and price match! Just picked up a black G1 tonight.
haha.... and I was thinking to buy the new I pod shuffle...
Hmm... I wouldn't rely on Engadget to get me best prices for sure...
I just got same phone in White color with FREE Mini-USB Car Charger + FREE Leather Case + FREE 8 GB Micro SD Card w/ Adaptor + FREE Body Glove Screen Protector for $97.99 at http://deals2buy.com/show/77309064
It's still a good price and their turn-around is about one day (versus Amazon telling me it would be about a month), but they WILL NOT honor the free stuff listed on Deals2Buy. Their outsourced script-driven Indian support/ordering service won't even discuss it, but they'll aggressively push their "discounted" accessories (which actually are discounted to fairly decent prices). But free loot -- Nope.
Kind of sucks...
The FAILS just keep coming... after telling me their computers were down and she'd call back in an hour (which took three hours), the rep announced that my credit card couldn't process the charges for the discounted accessories (uh, what?) but gave me a toll free "accessories hot line" where I could supposedly order them. So basically I'm getting the phone. Supposedly.
Just for laughs I called this accessories hot line (I figured I could at least hassle them over the advertised free extras), and my speakerphone has been playing awful easy-listening hold music for over an hour now.
This Wirefly operation is like the poster-child for a crappy outsourced online-purchase experience.
Sams Club has the G1 for $99.87 plus a 90-day $70 bill credit if you activate between Fri 13th - Mon the 16th. This goes for Indiana stores, anyway.
Any more info on this? Was it in an add or something?
I may or may not be in direct contact with someone who works there ;)
All of the Sams Clubs in Indiana except for the Columbus store are owned by Radioshack. This deal applies to all Sams in Indiana except that Columbus store.
Here's the scoop, I was wrong about one thing:
The G1 is already only $99.87 at these locations.
You also get the $35 activation free credited to your account after 90 days like normal no matter what date you buy.
But from Friday the 13th and Monday the 16th, the original $35 activation fee will be waived. So you don't have to pay it first and THEN get a $70 credit for $35 profit, you just get a $35 bill credit with NO activation fee, still $35 profit.
Shipping is less than impressive. I placed an order yesterday (3/12) with the free "2-day shipping" ... and I just received an e-mail estimating that I'll receive the phone within about one month. WTF?
I think I'll cancel this and try the in-store price-match thing mentioned above.
Bah... the store reps (I called three) are telling me it's against corporate policy to price match or to change the phone price for any reason. I then talked to a very friendly but very stereotypical Indian support person (on a god-awful noisy connection) at Wirefly and they said turn-around time is about 24 hours. So -- Amazon gets canceled. One month doesn't cut it in 2009...
I wish I got that good of a deal on my g1 i bought back in February.
