HP Mini 1000 VGA cables: hard to get, hard to use?
HP's Mini 1000 certainly hasn't had much difficultly attracting its share of fans, but it looks like those wanting to hook the netbook up to an external monitor have been having their patience tested considerably as of late. According to reports on the HP Support Forums, the promised VGA adapter for the netbook has been nigh impossible to come by and, for the time being at least, HP doesn't seem to be getting any more specific than "early 2009" about widespread availability. The headaches might not end then, however, as some folks have been reporting problems with the VGA out for the very similar Mini 2140 netbook, and with a USB-to-VGA adapter used with the Mini 1000. In both cases, the Mini 1000 is apparently unable to automatically detect the external monitor's native resolution, so it simply pumps out a standard 1024 x 768 resolution no matter what size monitor is hooked up. Looking for more tales of woe? Then dive into thread linked below for the full rundown of laments.

thats a pitty :(
Wow... just wow
Guess he hasn't read the 3-4 stories on this very site about the exact same sort of problems with adapters made by Apple?
These stories go to show that with proprietary cables that everyone loses except the companies essentially forcing their hands into your pockets.
What?
1. Apple video adapters work just fine.
2. Apple video adapters are generally available in quantity at the time the device ships
The only problem with Apple adapters is they are expensive.
@CraigJ
Have you completely missed the mini DisplayPort debacle?
What debacle? you mean the whole DRM thing? This article is about not being able to find them (the adapters) and resolution issues.
right, find us a good mini displayport adapter for macbook airs then.
The Apple adapters work for all the Mac Books including the Air. I have zero issues with my mini-DP to DVI adapter.
Apple makes proprietary adapters all the time dumbass.
Apples has had there share of crappy roll outs also. They aren't the Panacea of happiness you i-holes think they are.
Sucks... even more now that its not an Apple.
why should the iTrolls be involved in everything?
Apple fanboys make me laugh and cry at the same time.
Sexiest netbook. If only it ran Windows 7 and had a multitouch screen...
mine runs windows 7 beatifully
...AND a multitouch screen.
I think with Windows 7, netbooks would benefit the most from multitouch screens.
I run windows 7 with no issues on mine.
Windows 7 on a netbook -unlike on a desktop or laptop- really needs the multitouch. It's a small device and touch controls could be great. Add that to the fact Windows 7 was built with multitouch in mind, make me better wait for a W7 multitouch netbook.
Why would it be required on a net book? I don't see any benefit personally. Plus it raises the price tag so what's the upside?
Why do most note/netbooks have VGA? why not DVI/HDMI?
$
because of projector connectivity, it is better to have VGA than HDMI, and netbooks popularity began with ability to connect easily to projectors and do a presentation in 1kg of weight ;)
still, after reading the reviews of Dell Mini 10 and ASUS HE1008 I am decided to get HP Mini 2140 instead once the better resolution will come on market (supposed in couple of months). Is one excellent netbook...
My projector has HDMI. I would only get a laptop that has DVI/HDMI video out (or the Mac adapter...)
I was really interested in this netbook when it first came out, but the adapters were a deal breaker, I ended up waiting for the Eee 1000HE and couldn't be happier.
omg and I was just about to pick one up @ Costco, good thing i looked at my iPhone while standing in line
See, HP? Another customer lost...
I was reading that the VGA cables for these were supposed to cost $79.99. I couldn't believe my eyes...
Solution: buy something that uses industry-standard parts and connectors, like an Asus or MSI netbook, and NOT a HP POS.
I just got the 2140 after having it on pre-order, When I went to the windows update I had over 100 updates including XP SR 2.0 and others that have been out for a while, not impressed
I've seen so many issues with HP products in the last year that they're on my list of manufactures that I don't buy from. Reading through the thread was interesting - someone reporting that after an update their webcam didn't work.
If we'd stop supporting proprietary products with our money we'd start to see companies change their tune pretty quickly.
I know Apple has had a few slip ups in it's past, but in no way does it compare to the issues that a Dell, HP, etc., etc. have!
The number of products Apple turns out is nowhere near the amount HP and Dell turn out. And I beg to differ--looking at Macbooks and Macbook Pros, they've had their fair share of problems:
- Various cracking issues
- Pitting
- Overheating
- Nvidia problems (though these affect other manufacturers too)
- Display yellowing
...etc.
The real question is, why do you need to hook it up to a monitor? The whole point is extreme portability, no?
Extreme portability is a great thing if you are carrying it around for presentations
Projector !
The HP monitor out connector isn't as proprietary as many may think. There are more companies investing in that particular port because it not only gives you a monitor out capability but also doubles as an expansion port which HP already has released pictures and information on but still not for sale >:( Anyway, The sony P actually has the same port too. We'll see how things roll out though.
do you have any more info or links? i have been unable to find anything that is compatible with that port at all.
Thanks for the info! If I look into netbooks, I will make sure that the one I get has a standard video (VGA, HDMI) output. Because I know at some point I will probably hook it to a monitor or projector.
Hp stands for having problems.!!
I just picked up a HP Mini 1030nr and a USB to DVI out adaptor. Once I'm home, I'll test it out. Suprised to hear about USB-VGA problems.
I got into a row over this with HP the other day. I complained about the fact that they had advertised the product as having VGA out functionality but over 3 months after release had not provided the means to do so. They had the nerve to reply with
"The HP Mini Note 1000 is designed for portability, and not for power or performance. If you want simple access to web mail, internet sites like Youtube, Facebook, news etc, HP Mini Note 1000 is the right machine"
as though my wanting to use the laptop for presentations was a 'power' operation! Lets ignore the fact that the functionality is still missing. This will be the last HP product I buy. There are already mutterings of a class-action based on this
I've had this one (MSI Wind u100) for a few months now and it works great:
http://www.laptopmag.com/print_review.aspx?id=14841&url=http://www.laptopmag.com//review/laptops/msi-wind.aspx
It has a regular VGA-out. It came with WinXP SP3 Home installed and zero crapware. Cost was $329 at Best Buy.
I've had my 1035nr for about a month now and love it. I'm not concerned with the VGA out as I don't require it. I'm running windows 7 with no problems at all and would definitely recommend this netbook.
.
I just tried plugging an HP Mini 2140 into a 1280 x 1024 pixel monitor and had no problems at all. It detects the max resolution as well as a number of lower resolutions, and even let me use a dual display configuration.
I found this, which is the Canadian HP site.
Oddly without photograph, but definitely for sale. Considering buying one for my 1033cl
http://h20386.www2.hp.com/CanadaStore/Product.aspx?hpproduct=FY828AA
there are a lot of good usb to video solutions out there if you want to forget about the whole aux. video port route: http://sewelldirect.com/USB-to-DVI-External-Video-Card-High-Resolution.asp
Rico, that one on the Canadian HP site is NOT for sale. All you can do is add it to your "WISH LIST." You can't add it to your shopping cart.
...which is too bad, because I would have bought one right now if I was able to!
hmm.. apparently it seems that HP singapore has the VGA cable. i'm nt sure
Don't worry guys. HP proprietary port will be an industry standard soon! Think of it as being ahead of the pack once everything rolls out. =)
