Intel rated leading chip manufacturer again, AMD slips out of top ten
This economic crisis has been tough for nearly every business worldwide, perhaps best evidenced by the number of corporate spats we've seen develop lately as everyone gets more and more protective of their respective turfs. While Intel and NVIDIA have lately been engaged in an epic war of PowerPoint presentations, fewer disputes have been bigger or longer-running than the one between Intel and its more direct competition, AMD. That "us inside" company just earned some bragging rights, being named the biggest processor manufacturer in the world again by iSuppli, with a 13.1 percent global market share. AMD, which came in tenth last year, dropped down to the number twelve position in 2008 after its revenue declined 7.8 percent compared to 2007. News was also bad for Texas Instruments, which dropped a position largely thanks to the success of mobile processors from Toshiba and Qualcomm. Don't be so glum, TI, maybe successes from Russell Crowe's favorite flavor of pico projector will make up for the difference.

The AMD logo is giving me a headache....
OneLove @ Mar 14th 2009 6:54PM
Wow, I totally just said that before clicking "comments". Get out of my head!!!
Engadgetier @ Mar 12th 2009 9:24AM
AMD is the best....
AMD FTW!!
David @ Mar 12th 2009 3:37PM
I've had 3 AMD laptops. NONE of them have lasted a year without heat problems. They've been different manufactures too.
superhobo @ Mar 12th 2009 9:24AM
Erm, AMD is no longer a chip manufacturer, is it?
I thought they spun off the manufacturing business into the Foundry Company.

HOORAY FOR INTEL, BOO AMD....BOOOOOO!

I don't get chip fanboyism.
AMD makes good chips but I've just found that post Athlon XP the Intel chips have been better. If they survive I'm sure on a long enough timeline it will flip flop.
Bizam! @ Mar 12th 2009 10:19AM
Firstly, there's fanboyism with everything else, why not processors!?
Secondly, I disagree here, I was an Intel fanboy for a long time, but with AMD's lower price point and comparable chips, they've won me over. My overclocked Phenom X4 9950 performs like a champ, just as good as any Intel proc that i've had.
XGM @ Mar 12th 2009 12:27PM
Yea we need competition to keep prices low. Hope AMD releases a better competitor to the i7, because that way the darn things can drop in price.
Flaystus @ Mar 12th 2009 9:42AM
But we can all agree that Intel graphics chips blow.
Bizam! @ Mar 12th 2009 10:24AM
I'm totally with you on this one! I've rarely met an Intel graphics chipset that I liked. ATI/AMD is finally doing some nice things with their integrated chipsets, I hope they set a trend.
elBravo @ Mar 12th 2009 10:37AM
Wouldn't it be nice if this time next year, or two years, we were saying things like
"Man, nVidia chipsets are so much better than intel's, but intel's cpus still eek past nVidia cpus."
A year after this, nVidia rules the world once programmers figure out how to do parallel programming.
Loonie @ Mar 12th 2009 10:58AM
elBravo - personally, I hope we'll soon be looking back and wondering why we wasted so much time on archaic processing standards.

Man this is sad. I am lucky to be working at AMD again after a layoff. I really didn't want to go back but no one is hiring anywhere so I am definitley happy to have a job. But things are crazy. A lot of the peopke that made the company GREAT are gone. It's hard to go to work because of it. I do wish AMD the best but until CEO's in AMD and other companies help their employees instead of their wallets, I just don't see it surviving.
Professor Tom @ Mar 12th 2009 9:50AM
What the hell does Russel Crowe have to do with the pico projector linked to in this news story?

ehhh, amd has no excuse.... they havnt shocked and aweeedd us lately =\
now intel... have a party and give use usb 3.0 ^_^
Mike @ Mar 12th 2009 10:17AM
AMD kicked Intel's ass on bang for the buck for a few years. I hope they come back with a vengeance and force Intel to lower it's outrageous prices. The last thing we need is another monopoly.
Jinx @ Mar 13th 2009 1:16PM
Not entirely true
AMD won because it kicked the Pentium 4's ass w/ their Athlon 64 series (Newcastle) and they were priced about the same maybe the AMD was expensive on occasion but the performance was unmatched at the time.
I hope AMD can do something with "Bulldozer" next year, something tells me they can't keep this up much longer.
Puzzle T0rico @ Mar 12th 2009 10:19AM
I am really touched by your choice of crown:it is the crown in the spanish royal coat of arms!
Thanks from a spaniard.
fieldcar @ Mar 12th 2009 10:42AM
AMD just hasn't released anything in the marginally faster $1500 range, whoop-die-doo... Sorry, but I don't drop $6k on a PC every year. And when you look at the scheme of it all, AMD is keeping up with Intel, just at a lower price bracket.
darok3k @ Mar 12th 2009 11:51AM
just wait.. one of these days AMD will be at the top again..
Bosco @ Mar 12th 2009 11:55AM
It's so bad for AMD, they now rank behind Frito-Lay and Pringles.
Neoprimal @ Mar 12th 2009 12:20PM
For people that try not to subscribe to fanboyism, there are clear leaders. AMD got my money all the way from the Athlon K63 to the Athlon64 as my main preference. Unfortunately (for AMD), Intel lowered their price point DRASTICALLY at some point with the core2duo and quads, and so I jumped back on the Intel bandwagon for my computer. Why buy an 'inferior' (in terms of speed and value, not quality) processor at the same price point?
AMD still hasn't caught up. Now the Phenom X4 is blown away by the I7 920 which is only $60 more expensive. Why would anyone get the AMD unless they were just 'fans'? Unless AMD can make a product that trumps the i7 in sheer power, they will continue to be passed over by general enthusiasts and builders, like me.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not in love with Intel. I know for a fact that if AMD ever went down the drain, processors like the i7 920 would go up to prices like the i7 940, so on and so forth. Intel isn't interested in being a consumer favourite, they're in it to make money. So I hope that AMD stays strong and comes out with some really good competing products and that their fans stick with them through the rough times. I continue to buy AMD for my other home machines (mediaPC, betaPC and my wifes machine). But my laptop and main computer will be Intel based until AMD steps up.
Ayle @ Mar 12th 2009 3:07PM
You have to factor in the fact that the X58 motherboards are still pretty darn expensive while the Phenom II is still compatible with all the AM2+ motherboard so in the end it is cheaper.
Bobby @ Mar 12th 2009 5:32PM
AMD guts are Intel anyways..
Al Bundy @ Mar 12th 2009 9:01PM
...until Nvidia comes out with their own x86 chip...gee i hope intel has a good 3d video card out there...lol.
alex @ Mar 12th 2009 9:55PM
i mean cmon guys AMD also does have good cpu, but this round goes for intel and yes i personally intel :) why ?? take it as a homework :)
aznofazns @ May 18th 2009 9:57PM
what?
ashok pai @ May 18th 2009 11:11PM
AMD ftw!
Phenom II 720 be is gr8 value for money. right now you can plnok your money on plenty of cheaper ddr2 and a reliable and mature 780/ 790 based chipset from leading motherboard manufacturers without breaking the bank. and the phenom II - while not close to intel in benchmarks is remarkably good vaue for money when you factor in the whole system - in the end value for money wise AMD is on par with Intel - except for the very few who have infinite money, and people who always want the fastest, or someone who always want the bragging rights.
