The Web turns 20, FidoNet suffers abandonment issues

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of Sir Tim Berners-Lee's submission to CERN titled "Information Management: A proposal." Over roughly the next year and a half he had built HTTP, HTML, WorldWideWeb (the first web browser), CERN httpd (the first server software), and the first web server (http://info.cern.ch), paving the way for an unprecedented era of human communication and interconnectivity. We're not entirely sure how 4chan, Bert Is Evil, or Tila Tequila fit into all of this, but we'd sure miss them if they weren't here (well, not Tila Tequila -- definitely not Tila Tequila). The visionary chats about cyberspace past, present, and future after the break.

Chshocolate Raaaaiiiaiaiaiinn
I move away from the mic to breathe.
I move my frontal breathing vent away from the mic to respirate
Tila Tequila? I see that Engadget likes fake boobage...
I adjust the physical position of my dominant air vent away from the mic to restore necessary O2 amount in my lung organs
*bing* data data !
Is there still bandwidth?
This story = Zzzzzzzzz..
The cancer that is killing Engadget.
I'll be sure and send Al Gore a card.
Make sure to send it in a pneumatic tube for added effect.
Al won't take cards when he's out saving the planet. It's cash only.
So you see, boys and girls, the internet as you see and use it, was actually invented in Europe.
If you say so, but America invented Europe, so it's really more of Al Gore's invention.
But Richard Dean Anderson created America AND Al Gore.
But Apple invented Richard Dean Anderson.
Chuck Norris, people.
Chuck Norris invented everything.
Please. Chuck Norris may be tough, but NO ONE can handle MacGyver's knockout punch.
Internet = DARPA (US)
Web = CERN (Europe)
HTML = Hypertext = Apple (amazingly)
Now everyone is happy.
Yes, it is amazing that Apple invented Hypertext, especially as this system was out a decade before Apple was incorporated:

@LondonConsultant
You are right about Apple not having invented hypertext. It was actually invented in 1945.
But, it is commonly acknowledged that Apple's work in the area took it out of the realm of university computer science departments, and helped popularize it. For a comprehensive history, see, e.g., http://www.answers.com/topic/hypertext
How is the Web the Internet?
Look, its this simple
Steering Wheel, gearbox, = Web
Car = Internet
Not the same thing buddy
Worst analogy ever james bond, try better next time.
Correction: Perhaps 'worst' and 'ever' was a bit harsh, the world is so full of them that I should not overstate things like that.
ohhh boy.....
whats gonna happen next year when it turns 21!!
when it can drink legally! its not like its clean already though....
4chan was the result of the internet going on a drunken bender at their Sweet 16 and ending up with Travis Henry and Eric Cartman's mom.
Tim Berners-Lee is British so its been able to drink since 18....
;-)
Since Berners-Lee is British, it's been drinking, smoking and having unprotected sex pretty much since birth.
Thank God he's not a scouse, or it'd physically hurt us to use the Internet.
Aye, by British law its being able to reproduce for the past 4 years.
Drunkenly procreate for the past 2.
Be interesting to see what websites sprung up about 4 n 2 years ago.
Youtube is (nearly) one of them, turned 4 last month.
Other people will have to fill in the gaps
The Internet and Linux on the same date?! Awesome
In celebration of this event. I'm posting using Cello via Compuserve.
You should be working for Bob Vila, because your a TOOL!!
"your a tool"
Ummm.... I assume this article is referring to the idea of the Web turning 20, not the Internet. Come on guys, the Internet's been around since the late 60's... Lame...
Yeah, I think the government actually started working on the internet in the 50's as a solution against a possible attack on our communication nodes.
The Internet was originally a military invention - goatse.cx was based on secret Nazi research captured in the final days of the war.
True. As I'm fond of pointing out: There are many of us who have been on the Internet since before most people knew that there *was* an Internet.
Thank You Tim Berners-Lee!! (strange man that you are)
I'm actually friends with his nephew who is also kinda geeky lol. Fun times playing Time Splitters 2.
I just turned 20 too :D
Always thought it was created in '90
happy b day..and it was talked about in the 90s i think it was "created" way before..
Wonder how the internet will be 20 years from now..bet engadget will still be kickin it!
I think you mean the WEB turns 20, not the Internet.
Internet would be nothing without the web.
***check out "5,000 days later" days on TED
1:283/610 !!!
1:225/1
Also 1:12/1 for a while, and even 1:1/119 !
Wow, the internet's getting up in years. I say someone starts working on a successor and put that old horse down. We can call it.... the inter........loofah.
"The WWW project does not take responsibility for the accuracy of information provided by others."
I guess they are pretty happy they put that in there.
