Zypad mil-spec wrist PC gets a refresh

Looks like the Parvus wrist computer we last saw almost three years ago has received an upgrade. The Zypad WR1100 is a 3.5-inch color touchscreen device aimed at the defense industries, soldiers of fortune (who, surprisingly enough, make a large part of our readership), futuristic Boy Scouts, and anyone else who needs a Linux device strapped to their wrist. Aside from a high strength / low weight fiberglass-reinforced nylon-magnesium alloy housing designed to take a licking in the field, this wrist-worn bad boy rocks 256MB memory, 128MB flash storage, various connectivity options (including WiFi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee), a GPS, a compass, biometric fingerprint sensor, and an accelerometer that puts the system in standby when the arm is hanging down beside the body. Let us take a moment to ponder the irony of the inevitable Quake mod this device will certainly see at some point in the near future.

Pip Boy Version 1.0
That's exactly what I thought when I first saw it.
I thought the same thing! I can't believe the author did not make a reference to Fallout. Perhaps Mr. Flatley is more into being Lord of the Dance than being a gamer! :-)
Exactly, it's dying to be modded to a Pip-boy.
I thought Pip Boy as well @_@
It can't be a Ver 1.0, its got a color screen. Everybody knows the older models had a green screen, but where more reliable.
Older models? My Pip-Boy 3000 still has a green screen :|
@PLUR74
You said it man, took the words out of my finger tips.
Greetzzz
i can't wait for the mod.
Oh Boy!
Where is the light? I need to find a couple Stim-Paks.
Wow it's just like splinter cell....Lambert....
Download their porn and attack their base, at the same time!
It may not play splinter cell, but with a 400MHz processor and 256MB of ram, it can play two instances of doom at once.
Looks more like the PipBoy from Fallout 3.
Wow, how much does that thing weigh!?
if you have to ask, then you wont be going on any missions. :)
People likely to buy it use their right wrists for "other" purposes, (wacking off)
Thanks for the clarification there (sarcasm intended).
my htc diamond is smaller, faster and has much more memory
Yeah, I go to the defense industry conventions/conferences all the time and can never get past that. Make me a ruggedized shell and I'll just stick my own components in without be gouged on the price.
Some companies have wrist mounted OLED computers they've been demoing. I'll hold out for those.
This reminds me of 'Glitch' from Reboot.
"gun, death blossom mode!"
Looks like you are supposed to put a dolphin in it for transportation.
Zypad < Pip-Boy < Cortana!
Almost makes me want to join the military...... Or just wait til a nuclear holocaust and Im sure the overseer will give me one......
Yes, but then the overseer will chase your father out of your vault and try to kill you.
Leela?
I may start out thinking Leela, but then I'm thinking I take a medium powerband. And I'm setting it to spank-ray, Zorak!
Yea, I'm enough of a gadget geek to want one.
i need one so i can gaff my crappy pip-boy to it and get some IRL VATS in this bitch
I get the feeling that someone at Microsoft is thinking: XBox Portable.
Too much Fallout

thats the piece i have, awsome as all balls but its just a watch :(
Zypad...I salute you.
128 MB of flash memory? Like storage? Could they throw a $30 SD card on there and get 16GB?
Its the military, adding 16GB of storage would cost something like $1,499 and add a year or two at least to the development cycle.
*couldn't
You're right, I forgot that this was the military.
This was probably made for them 20 years ago when these would be amazing specs and we're just hearing about it now :P
I just checked, the thing has a microSD slot according to the manufacturer's specs page.
When the mechanism jams the microsd will pop right out. Good call.
"rocks 256MB memory, 128MB flash storage..." Wait, what!? It has more RAM than storage? They couldn't spring the, what, $10 for a 1 gig SSD these days?
Ye, my thoughts exactly. 2-4Gigs would make it a lot more usable.
Could be its some legacy hardware limitation.
A micro SD can hold 16gb now... that would of made sense to go with that.
I just checked, it has a microSDHC slot (something Mr. Flatley failed to notice - seriously the quality of you guys' reporting is getting worse and worse :( )
Can it control your tv?
OMG Futurama is HERE!!!!!!
Sorry, not ugly and unwieldy enough.
I would totally buy one if they changed the name to PIP Boy
I'm really impressed by everyone's ability to restrain themselves. Not the fallout Pip-Boy referances, but that was really unavoidable, but rather the Apple iPhone Individuals haven't started proclaiming how much better the iPhone interface is and how "blah blah blah Steve Jobs Amen"
baffo are you really that dense or am I just missing a joke?
And remember, if they capture you, press the red button on the side. May god be with you.
