shank is an idiot!
anyway the funny thing about the phone that was pulled is it did full 3.5g on fido with no issues. i think the problem was partially the phone but also the network. this is by far the best bang smartphone ever. rim and apple have fallen behind and have lost touch with what a smart phone is. windows is just too damn slow. symbian does it all and fast. oh and thank god for true copy and paste. even jailbreak will not save the iphone. do i have to even mention how much better nokia suite is then itunes? drag and drop....done. put it on 10 computers and never worry about synching.
I read all ur comments above guys.. i always felt iphone was only good for the touch interface thingy.. i have been using s60 from the past 6 years. i have also used s80 but its not as exciting as s60.
am not telling this being a nokia fanboy or sumthin.. but all u iphone fans are not ready to go out of ur boundaries of apple to chk this phone out... u will realize ur wrong sooner or later!!
as somebody earlier.. i always hated syncing the ipod.. difficult whhen using it on different computers. its just that people out here in the us are not exposed to anything else. the nokia acts like ur pen drive, just drag n drop music.
N speaking about apps.. guys app store is nuthing at all compared to the vast amount of applications available for symbian.. for example i had a 6600 in 2004. it came with 10 features.. and with third party apps i cud do 15!! am serious n no exagerration here. whereas ppl out here are strugglin for copy n paste.
as i said probably in 2 years time u guys ill be symbian fans..
you may want to include the source for that quote as based off your previous posts i do not believe this to be your work.
At first I thought this title was a reference to the musical episode of Buffy, but then I realized that was "Once More With Feeling" not "Once Again." The Whedon fan in me is heartbroken.
Shank, quit being such a n00b...it's annoying.
Owned the 5800 from Hong Kong since Dec 20, having an iPod Touch and 90% friends with iPhones, I love my 5800. Just the speaker playback without headphones already blew Apple away.
The ability to add/remove apps and connect to computers without using a propriatory software is always a bonus to me.
Finally, it's a S60v5 phone! I have been on the Symbian phones since the Nokia 3650
However, the ear piece issue happend to me, but it's not something that I can't fix.
Oh... the camera... It's probably one of the best, now even with GPS tagging. You can sign up for Nokia OVI service to share our images to Flickers and VOX. See the images I've taken:

One thing I dislike about the iPhone/Touch is that I need to jailbreak the device, then I need to wait until someone can hack it during a firmware update.. what a pain. With all the S60s, you all know how easy it is to install HellOX.
Most people here in the US don’t know what they're missing because the US market is not Nokia’s primary market so they don’t spend a lot on advertising here. Let’s face it; the iphone is a piece of shit. That’s not saying it wasn't innovative but the battery life sucks, the reception isn’t great and the operating system is extremely limited (this is not counting its numerous other problems it has as a phone). I personally own an n82 and it can do much more then my friends’ iphones can, not to mention that the battery lasts a lot longer. Symbian is a better os and offers much more flexibility. The only place apple has really done well is here in the US, in Japan they can’t even give the piece of shit away. Apple’s sales are not even a drop in the bucket for Nokia when compared to the global market figures. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, Nokia is king of the hill. Bottom line, nokia makes good phones, better then iphone for sure. The quality and experience has paid off and Symbian versus iphone os...no contest, game set and match
Shank, you have no idea what you are talking about. This screen is much better for watching videos. It windscreen which means no black borders for 16:9 content and the resolution is superior compared to iPhone and iPod touch. On top of that this has stereo speakers that sound really great.
It's awesome to see the amount of comments from Shank in this topic. Clearly this either amounts to a very poor troll (it should only take one or two comments to set a flame ware off, not over ten) or a very upset fanboy. Either way it's amusing in a sad kind of way.
Anyway, back on topic: I have a 5800 and have few complaints about it, the main ones being that I'm not convinced about the 'touch once for some things, touch twice for others' approach and that the landscape keyboard could do with predictive text like the iPhone and my Omnia had. That said, for a phone of it's size T9 is clearly the best input method for texting so it's only really e-mails this applies to.
Aside form that it's awesome and also quite satisfying when I'm in the pub holding a pint in one hand and texting with the other whilst my mates with iPhones and Storms have to hunt for somewhere to put their beer before they can send a message.
shank u r clearly idiot bro u duno wut u r talking bout. i am very rich man who hate iphone. it too girly. girly guys like u like it that why u defending so much. y u on here talking so much? bcuz u have no lief bro. u need school for propar grammer. i have masters in eng language ok?? dnt even try answer this cuz i am 2 much btter then u.
Obvious troll is obvious? lol....
How can you tell if you you have an old/new american model or a european model? I'm looking to buy one of these (either that or a samsung omnia) but where i live i've no idea whether the one i bought would have been shipped from the states or europe and i'm not sure how the update/exchange issue will be handled here (saudi arabia, for the curious) if i end up with an old american one.
Look under the battery, it should have the IMEI Number and the Model/Product number.
If your's says 5800-NAM (or something similar, I don't actually have one, but it will definitely say 'NAM' somewhere there) then it's the North American version
GodDAMNIT Shank is a fucking moron!
I think Shank finally fell asleep! Somebody draw 'I
Aw man! The finisher on that comment got cut off by some html nonsense! Sorry, that was supposed to say:
"Sombody draw 'I heart NOKIA' on his forehead with a Sharpie!"
I know I shouldn't reply to trolls but, hey, I'm bored.
You do realize that the 5800XM syncs with iTunes, right?
Let's put our gloating aside…
This phone is a great device, but since we already have a dominated cellular phone with a touch screen it's quite inevitable we need to compare every touch screen phone with it.
So I played with the phone only yesterday and they didn't have it in stock, but from what I can tell, the screen is truly wide screen; unfortunately it almost as long as the ubiquitous iPhone, but not as wide, so you don't have as much space is manipulate the phone with your fingers. In addition, the screen is resistive, so you need to physically pretty accurate into the screen to do things; that can get quite clumsy especially if you have fat fingers. The device does come with a stylus, to alleviate that issue. The good news is that most of the icons and "buttons" are big, so it's quite nice.
Another issue with the small screen is when you use the keyboard you can't see the application anymore, but you get that PSP-like text box with the keypad on the side (If you don't know what I'm talking about then you need to seriously read more Engadget).
That said it's great S60 device, but personally, I'm waiting for the Nokia N97.
Shank = Joke = noob = fanboy = LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
i have done more with my nokia 5800 in 2 days then i have done in the 8 months with my iphone 3g jailbroken. this is mainly due to the nokia pc software which allows so much more then itunes ever did. the audio quality is far superior. video quality is great and will be even better once divx completes its 5800 software which is currently in production. although slower the myphone app adds to the nokia gui giving it the same iphone menu. all connection types are far better with s60 giving it much faster speeds. i will actually be able to fully utilize my data plan for things the iphone restricts. this is especially good for uploading my better photos to flickr at full resolution.
Gonna get N97, 5800 camera is a joke
here is video off my 5800:

This debate has become one of those PC vs. Mac debate. Then you will see Mac people and PC people argue the whole day for it. I have both, and I enjoy every single bit of both of them.
Back to the topic, the 5800 is the first touch screen by Nokia; by getting it, you accept the fact that it is not perfect. I had the Nokia 3650 and it had lots of issues and I lived with it. Then the 6600, 7610, N series, they are all perfect. The 5 series phones are entry level phones anyways, let's see the flagship model N97 in the next few months and see if it will live up to the hype.
I have to agree, Nokia spend VERY LITTLE money in promoting this in North America. Over in Asia, they have celebrities in Nokia flagship stores showing off the phone and people are lining up just like the people here with the iPhones.
North America consumers want cheap/free phones with a contract. In Asia/Europe people pay full price, and that's the difference. You can't even buy a legal unlocked phone without going through all the hoops. I rather pay the full price for a good phone thn paying a subsidized price for a phone that has functions disabled/crippled.
Just one correction. Nokia released 7710 in 2004, which was a touch phone, so 5800 is nokias second touchphone.
nokias statement was first s60 touchscreen not first touch screen. and nokia has had 3 prior touchscreens the last of which went only to china.
Well... the phone was in the Batman movie, but never saw any printed promos in stores in Canada. Fido and Rogers are not in any hurry to offer this phone with a plan either.
Oops.. my mistake there. I think the 5800 is probably the first S60v5 that made it to mainstream. The rest, ended up in early discontinuation (regardless of how "pretty" they were)
great music phone come with hi-fi and gps

I've just read through the whole eighty one plus comments and i noticed one common thing about we Americans, we are so over protective of anything American. The apple fanboyism is just mind buggling.
I don't know about you guys, but as for me i really getting bored of my iphone 3g, everyone here in the US has one and it has lost its cool factor. My girlfriend just purchased the Nokia 5800 yesterday for the sake of being unique and to tell the truth, its a pretty neat device, nice looks, usability isn't bad at all.
The fact is that its a neat device and it will appeal more to the growing number of people who want some variety when it comes to their gadgets. And am one of them, but i'll stick to my iphone till the nokia n97 is released then i'll probably ebay my iphone and then purchase the "beast" of all mobiles.
And i gotta tell you guys its really growing in popularity... Has anyone seen flo-rida's new video? The Nokia 5800 made a cameo appearance on it...
!!!Stop fanboyism, be realistic!!!
the only problem with the n97 is the placement of the space bar and the resistive touch screen. I know my name my think i am an iPhone nut but i am not. I only use an iPhone because it is the least bad option out there thats why i am personally exited about the Pre the N97 and the omnia hd
I got a 5800 in Vancouver Canada and had to RMA it because the firmware wouldn't update. I chose Nokia because they were the best, been around longer and had great free dev tools. I wanted to be ready for the App store they are putting up, but without being able to run python and install version 20 of the firmware.... I was stalled out and very, very unhappy.. G1 and iPhone are putting out better bluetooth frameworks now and both have full featured app stores. Nokia screwed up this roll out in NA for sure.
Nokia + Polar heart rate was what was after, because I have open source for this here:

Anyone else in Canada or USA have to wait weeks on an RMA?
