will it be able to multitask??
even windows 3.1 was able to! come on man!!!
Ditto, it'd be nice to see them add in functionality to allow apps to run in the background. Then I might actually think about getting an iPhone...who am I kidding, I'm waiting for the Touch Pro 2
iPhone is so last week.
Who cares about multitasking? I can't wait for Apple to invent copy and paste, just like they invented mp3 players and touch screen devices.
I would buy a new iPhone to be able to multi-task. I think tons of others would too. Unfortunatly, I think Apple know that too. I doubt we'll see multi-tasking in a software revision. It's too much of a major departure from the original product.
I'm guessing you'll see multi-tasking in the next hardware revision. I'm hoping that will be in June. I also expect them to include the new battery technology (the same tech that's in the new MacBook Pro's) in the next iPhone. This battery boost will allow multi-tasking applications while continuing to get a days worth of usage out of a single charge.
Although I have missed copy paste at times, I sorely miss not having Push notifications. Wasn't it supposed to be in 2.0? Did Apple pull a huge doublethink on us?
I'm personally hoping for resolution independence introduced in the new SDK. That way developers could start migrating their apps over.
It would also open up the hardware side and not have the phone tied to a specific resolution from here on out.
Uh oh, iPhone post...UNLEASH SAAD RABIA AND THE APPLE HATING TROLLS!!!
You haterade-swigging tools on Engadget need a new schtick. Seriously.
Good News! Since the iPhone is running a UNIX-based OS, multi-tasking is not a problem and it's been able to do this since Day 1. Your issue is that Apple does not allow running background 3rd party applications. While I can see some benefit to doing this, I also have sufficient memories of the Task Manager from Windows Mobile to know that I don't want to see this on the iPhone. If Apple delivers the Push Notification service that was promised about a year ago then I'll be happy with that.
Don't forget to pack a lot of Kleenex.
Joshua, don't forget to post 10 reasons why iPhone OS 3.0 misses the mark, alright? Thanks!
Sorry I just got stuck on "invent copy and paste" I don't know how you could "[re]invent" copy and paste... unless maybe you had MS sam speak your clipboard to you...
what a fanboy
I think your sarcasm processor needs to be checked by the geek squad...
Hey, Apple, take your licensed headphones and shove em.
And I thought Microsoft was bad. You guys are the new Microsoft.
While I don't agree with Apple's license nonsense, I didn't realize that licensed headphones were a part of the iPhone OS.
matt, it is just the beginning of many to come.
That would be pretty sad if new features in the new OS required the new headphones....
Does it matter as much if you are provided with headphones? Arguably, the quality of included headphones is decent, so you'd only be dishing them for better quality or better comfort. Neither will likely be cheap, so manufacturers will only see it as being worth it because they have to offer something the stock headphones don't.
@anexam
no. Just, no.
Better comfort doesnt necessaraly mean expensive. If people have different size in shoes why not in ears.
Ta da! Someone said it, and so it is. Today, apple is the new microsoft.
I guess I'm impressed they beat google to the punch.
Now wait, if iPhone OS 3.0 contains Palm Pre features, does that make them copiers?
Yeah, really. Microsoft thought that since they had a virtual monopoly on computers (that Apple eventually got rid of), then they could get away with making their products suck (cough*vista*cough). Now Apple is doing this with their mp3 players and phones.
People still care for the iphone in 2009? Really?
Um.... duh?
stfu, troll
Unfortunately!
""People still care for the iphone in 2009? Really?""
dont lie .. you know you have one in your pocket right now
I would have one in my pocket if apple upgraded there phone, i don't care about the software because the iphone hardware is already outdated
If you want a real phone take a look at samsung Omnia HD , nokia N97 or SE "I do you" Phones
hopefully apple will upgrade there phone with there next iphone release but from looking at apple fans reaction i doubt that apple will change anything soon, i mean look at them just a rumor about the iphone getting copy and paste and we already have a party here
you are so jealous DR House.
what new hardware would you prefer House???
Congraturations! Out of the three phones you listed, two aren't out yet and the other has no chipset advantage over the iphone.
It's completely feasible a hardware revision will hit this summer in time to compete with idou, omnia hd, pre, or anything else you can think of.
""Also, don't forget about the Palm Pre. This device holds much potential.""
bad ass phone does no good if your on a crappy network .. sprint gets two thumbs down
@Saad
what do you mean "Unfortunately!"?
You are here posting on this thread, so apparently, you care enough that not only did you click the read link, you took the time to post at least twice.
Do you find it unfortunate that you still care?
"i don't care about the software"
I think this is the point where I stopped reading.
@jguilb, I think it matters where you live. Everyone I know uses sprint, the plus side is I have the lowest minute plan since its free to talk to each other.
@Templarian
you know that AT&T has free mobile-to-mobile on their network as well, right? That's not some magical Sprint-only service.
@ KELMON
"i don't care about the software"
I think this is the point where I stopped reading.
====================================
Learn to read buddy,my point is do you care about windows vista or XP or mac OS if the system running it is single core CPU that run at 300MHZ and have 128MB ram with 3GB HD??
I don't care about the iphone software because it seems that its hardware is incapable of multitasking/copy paste/record videos/etc
but you dont care as long as you see that apple shiny logo on the product that you wanna buy right?
In all seriousness, hardware is not important. Software has always been, and will always be, the most important factor of a computing device. As long as the hardware is sufficient to run the software then that is all that really matters. If the software is bad then no amount of hardware will make the experience good.
@DR House
Ever heard of Microsoft? They took the exact opposite approach to you. I wonder what happened to that small business?
@Karlw
Microsoft make software that you can install in any device unlike apple
you cant buy the iphone OS without the iphone lame hardware so i cant see whats your point is exactly
its matter of balance of software+hardware you need BOTH, thats why i and almost everyone else is not buying the iphone (iphone sells is the minority compared to worldwide other phone sells)
a bad PC with best software will never ever work
Good luck running any decent software with P2 222MHZ these days , iphone hardware and software is below average since early 2008
well, you have the arrogant aspect down, but you're lacking the genus and brilliance.
@Craig J
Genus and brilliance?
Well that belong to the iphone i guess, what a wonderful device at least you can call and receive calls from it right? ops it fails even at that, all these people complaining about there dropped calls , its funny how they hate the iphone already yet they keep it just because they think that it makes them hip and cool, real people like me is already cool and don't need an iphone to make them cool, iphone still wont make you cool and hip specially when you are ugly and fat people WAKE UP!
/woosh
House,
I know you have heard of jailbreaking the iphone right? It's capable of copy paste, multi tasking, mms, landscape keyboard and more. 3.0 better be good. I have a feeling Most people are gonna stay where they are firmware wise. It has everything everyone complains about and more. Shame you have to jb, but its capable.
I'd love to see multitasking, but that isn't gonna happen.
Oh boy!
*head explodes*
I hope it's the one above your shoulders, not a euphemism for something perverse...
cut and paste still an issue for the 'world changing revolutionary' phone .. a gazillion dollar plan for text messaging but no MMS .. time to step up your game Apple .. before PALM sends you to the PRE- historic era
Word!
Although i've managed other functions such as multi-tasking and task manager on my iPhone...stuff like MMS and copy-paste have not consistently worked on the iPhone like they did on the Tilt.
Still, i'm rather happy with my buy and am hoping simple stuff like MMS and copy-paste would be available via update at 3.0 when it does release.
Your pun = win of the day!
