I tried PDANet to tether (needs jailbreak). It works, the problem is just that it seems to max out the CPU. The phone got so hot that I was concerned it would melt and battery life is an estimated 30 minutes or less.

Especially if you're in the UK, in which case, your iPhone has been able to do MMS for at least 3 months.
You can jailbreak to tether. Or be one of the lucky few who bought NetShare before it was pulled (as I was).
