Sony Style Comcast Labs opens to show off future of high-speed internet
Eager to see what life's like on a Sony VAIO hitting speeds in excess of 160Mbps? Head on over to the City of Brotherly Love, as that's where a flashy new retail location is opening up to simultaneously showcase the future of high-speed internet and Sony gear. The Sony Style Comcast Labs facility will open its doors to the public tomorrow in Philadelphia's Comcast Center, where onlookers will be able to check out the power of DOCSIS 3.0 as well as some applications and platforms being developed to take advantage of all that speed. As far as we can tell, this co-branded location is nothing more than a showcase of current and future products for both firms, though we fully anticipate that reps will be on hand to take orders of whatever you fall for while browsing around. Anyone down for checking it out?

If Comcast is so interested in showing "future" stuff. How about first adding the Tivo software to my damn HDDVR like I heard was supposed to happen a couple years ago. BTW, I am in Seattle. Has ANYONE had the update yet?
We're getting Tivo!?!
...yea, no Tivo for me in Seattle either.

If Comcast is so interested in showing "future" stuff. They should remove the stupid bandwidth cap.
if they remove that cap, people will abuse the sh!t out of it. I know i would.
abuse is just use with an ab
abuse is just use with an ab
I'll take a look :)
and I'll try to get some Pics too :)
Thank you Sony for letting me download porn faster!!! :)
I Will also check it out!
So fast!
Whats that going to cost per month? $250.99.
Pffft.
In all seriousnesses... prob more than that
In Seattle right now Comcast offers the following: (Per Month)
Up to 15Mbps - $42.95
Up to 20Mbps - $52.95
Up to 30Mbps - $62.95
Up to 50Mbps - $142.95
Yeah that's what you pay, but you only get 2 - 8mbps in peak hours. FUCK COMCAST!
Problem is, at 160Mbps you can only use it for 15 minutes before you hit the monthly data cap and get bumped back down to 56Kbps. Bummer.
exactly! More people need to realize this :/
Id rather have 5Mbps with no cap then 500Mbps with a cap
Problem is, someone must be stealing an insane amount of video and music to hit a 250GB a month cap.
you know not what you speak of.
At my last apartment I had Comcast. There was no monthly cap there. I was easily hitting over 250 a month.
Wonder if they'll have any Bravias hooked up to Comcast's shittacular, overly compressed HD channels. All 3 of them.
oh ya - gotta love the stretched 4:3 content relabeled HD.
Will they simulate hitting usage caps by shutting off network access on the 15th through last days of the month?
I approve of this comment.
160Mbps?!?! Man, think of all the porn I can get in an hour.
Seriously, if they want to impress me, they should have HD channels that aren't combressed to shit. Battlestar Gallactica on SciFi HD looks like 8-Bit era Mario it is so blocky.
"Man, think of all the porn I can get in an hour."
I think we all prefer not to.
To all you Comcast haters out there, take into account the amount of work it takes to run a service network that passes 47 million homes, delivers hundreds of petabytes of data and carries tens of billions of minutes of phone calls every month and manages to do so with very few actual issues. Yes the rollout of Tivo to the set-top-box has been slower than expected and yes in some markets, where the HFC plant that Comcast purchased from Time Warner or Adelphia is in poor condition, some of the HD channels have to be compressed. But how many other MSO's are rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 as aggressively? Of the 100 HD channels Fios advertises having, how many are you likely to watch (can you say HD Community Access?)? It's easy to flame Comcast because they're a big target but credit where credit is due, Comcast continues to innovate in an industry dominated by companies content to perpetuate the status quo.
Disclaimer: I work for Comcast so please feel free to flame me as well as my employer. I also realize few people, if any, will come forth in agreement for fear of being eaten alive by the trolls but we all know there's millions of satisfied customers because if there weren't, Comcast wouldn't be in business anymore. Simple economics. And don't start whining about monopolies because Comcast has been getting smacked around by the FCC and dealing with competition from private cable operators, LEC's and satellite for years. Everyone has choices and many of them choose Comcast because they provide a superior service, even though it may not be en-vogue to admit it.
Oo w/ out that disclaimer, I would of thought you were just a fan of comcast!
I love how you talk of comcast like its a company you own. But its cool, people do not care about the struggles of "comcast", all we care about is a service that is reliable and beneficial to us.
Greetings from VCC !
Conditions for a lot ISPs is similar hard worldwide,
Hong Kong have just 7 million people but every ISPs are providing 100mb connections at 1/8 the price of Comcast. With 200mb connections less than 2x the price of 100mbs.
Ironicly, $1 USD is around $8HKD, so the numbers after the dollar sign is the same.
Let alone Japan or South Korea.
Even at locations that does not have FTTH, that do 30mb
Comcast is great if you don't mind dealing with a company that will turn your information over to the RIAA/MPAA, and that works jointly with them to institute bandwidth caps that limit what you're able to do with your service.
But other than that, they're fine.
I don't care about how difficult it is - I pay for service, I expect results. If your networks going down more often then for chrissakes take away some of that executive pay, combine it with what I'm paying and hire some of those people out of work to a) keep the network going and b) keep it running at full speed for everyone, all the time.
@CoffeeDragon:
In fact, I don't have another option for broadband in my area. No private cable operators have access to the cable. Comcast has a government-sanctioned monopoly here (I'm also in Seattle) I have tried to switch but my neighborhood is 'zoned for Comcast.' Sure everyone has options, but only if you count dial-up modems and satellite dishes.
I am forced to pay Comcast for internet and TV like millions of "satisfied customers" (read hapless suckers). I'm not just flaming Comcast because they're big, but because their technology and policies suck. For example:
The set-top boxes suck bigtime. AND, I have to rent, I can't buy one. I've already paid for it once over but I'm still renting it.
I can't record anything with this box, something a $30 video card in my old Dell computer could do 6 years ago. It doesn't have to be fancy-pants TiVo. I prefer El Gato anyway. There are plenty of companies to provide this technology.
If I have to unplug it the channels won't show up for a good 30 to 60 minutes. I can order a pizza, eat it, and pass it in that time.
I watch Comedy Central and some NBC. Before Hulu I had to pay $45 more to get 60 channels so I could watch me some goddamn Jon Stewart. I ended up saving 2 months to bribe the cable guy instead.
Superior service, indeed.
Future? I've been using 100 Mbit for three years.
I'm willing to bet that you don't live in the US and A.
SO... On most PC's you cant tell a difference between 15Mbps and 100Mbps- and we all know your real world speed is nowhere near 100Mbps
I don't know how they'll get DOCSIS 3.0 in Philadelphia for Comcast Center; Philadelphia doesn't have DOCSIS 3.0. Not that I'd get it if we did, though.
To those claiming the 250gb cap to be plenty of space, I both agree and disagree. What I mean is for the average person sure its fine but for a power user we can easily exceed that, I once tracked my bandwidth usage for a whole month and found it to be on average around 500gb/s a month and I believe it would be higher too if my connection was faster ( i only get 8mbps). I think comcast should have a unlimited data plan at the very least.
Will they charge you $80 for just walking in the front door because it is considered a "service call", prevent you from going to the Verizon store next door because they have a monopoly on that side of the mall, all the while playing that horrible monotone song from their new ad campaign?
excuses aside, this isnt going anywhere. Comcast is a joke; dont even TRY to stick up for them. NO company should take years to improve its service.
