Apple's done a decent job of implementing features that we've all been clamoring for into its forthcoming OS 3.0, and aside from
copy and paste, there's probably no one single feature add bigger than this. You heard right --
multimedia messaging (MMS) is at long last coming to the iPhone 3G (sorry, first-gen iPhone owners) after years of
dealing strictly with SMS. During the
keynote, Apple was
pretty remarkably short with details, simply noting that MMS "support" would be added. Frankly, we don't expect anything mind-blowing; it'll probably look a lot like the current SMS setup, and it'll definitely make AT&T happy when you start firing away picture messages without first subscribing to an unlimited messaging plan.
Update: Apple's
official PR on the subject has given us just a bit more to chew on. We're told that MMS will enable iPhone 3G users to "send and receive photos, contacts, audio files and locations with the Messages app," hinting that Apple may just smash MMS and SMS together into a single 'Messages' app in OS 3.0. Also of note, owners will also be able to "forward and delete multiple messages."
i suggest you send them feedback and tell them not to use the hardware BS line to keep 1st gen users from getting MMS.

only iPhone 3G? What the fuck apple?
The fact that MMS wasn't included in the Original is not a reason to deprive people of it now. When they launched the iPhone they promised we would get ongoing software and functionality updates. It was part of the "game changing" nature of the product. It came as a shock to me that there was no MMS support in an otherwise sophisticated multimedia phone. I have been longing for this for two years (after giving up my RAZR). People still send me photo messages that I can't easily access. If they cut out the 1st generation owners for a business, rather than technical reason, I will hold it against them when my contract expires in about 3 months.
Thats quite alright when it comes time to upgrade my phone to get the features I need I might just look at the palm pre a little harder...if palm ever releases it that is.
Apple has a great record for screwing over customers and it is good to see that all the iPhone 2g users are no exception to that long and wonderful tradition.
oh my god i cant believe you suckers never had MMS, something i never knew, LMFAO, I wonder what all the little whores done when they found that out, fucking hularious, hahahaha
Will mms be available in the devolper sdk?
I've never been a huge fan of Apple's stuff (especially iTunes... that bastard software!) but I will give it to them, this phone is pretty well rounded. This firmware update will certianly piss on the bonfire of any Apple basher and is seriously making me reconsider my choice in phone. Though it's taken them far too long, Apple have finally added the features that complete the phone and it boasts a pretty impressive feature set.
I was very close to buying one, running away and having an affair with it... but then I looked down at my Bold sitting lovingly in my hand and knew I could never love another!
Till my contract runs out. :)
hey guys dont feel too bad! original iPhone is only two years old, and it's starting to lose a few features here and there.
In a few months, we'll get Snow Leopard, which will deprecate my 2.5 year old Quad G5, and it cost a fuck of a lot more than an iPhone.
you think Steve will change his tune if i send feedback to apple?
stick to the 3rd party devs, like the guys who make SwirlyMMS. you can bet they wont leave 1st gen owners hanging like the phone's manufacturer does on a regular basis to its customers.
My Plan says "iPhone Text Messaging 1500" and mentions nothing to the fact of MMS, Video, etc. Am I the only one?
That is why my next phone will no longer be an iPhone.
Damn! This was supposed to go under nesteazba's comment:
"Thanks for beta testing the iPhone 1G for us, loyal customers! Here is your reward! A big stick of no MMS up your @$$!"
Boohoo you have an old phone and you want all the updated stuff -
your a F--king tool.
If you wanted MMS so bad why did you buy a iPhone 1.0
I don't give a flying F--K about MMS so go F--K yourself.
I see people quoting AT&T's regular 'messaging' plans, but if you actually read the 'iPhone' messaging plans, they are worded differently. All the current iPhone messaging plans specifically say 'Text' messaging and/or 'SMS'. They have deliberately not included MMS in their wording. That could be for two reasons. 1- Until 3.0, that was the only capability the iPhone had. Or 2- They left the door open to charging extra once the iPhone did get MMS. I personally hope it's number 1!
FYI, here is the wording from at&t's site under iPhone messaging plans:
You’ve got unlimited data for your iPhone, why not get unlimited SMS messaging? With iPhone Text Messaging Unlimited, you never have to worry about sending or receiving a text message again. Send as many as you want, to as many friends and family as you want, as often as you want.
I know this ain't a support forum or anything but I don't have the little icon to the left of the text field when composing MMS messages. This icon enables the use of the camera or the ability to dig through old photos you've taken with the phone to send along with the message. Anyone else notice this?
it might be cuz you updated to the newest version of swirly...i tend to wait until the newest verison is out awhile to see if its really better than the one im using....and actually swirly didnt work for me until the newest one came out so im glad i kept the old version
Not sure if this was covered already, but I just got off the phone with AT&T. They said there will be no additional charge for MMS. The current required $30 data plan on a 3G iPhone covers MMS as well. Yay. Sorry if I'm a little late with this info. :)
so even if i have a 200 txt plan MMS wont cost anything? NICE! Makes me glad i have an iPhone 3G!!
it's bull that MMS it only works for 3G which pays a little extra premium, I'm sure any video format that's not MOV probably won't work with the iPhone. I was excited to hear MMS but with it only being for the 3G does suck. I realy don't feel like upgrading to 3G until full Turn By Turn GPS is implemented.
I have the new iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 firmware.. the MMS is there and I can do everything BUT send it since AT&T has blocked the protocol to use it. I called and there is a "future" link for iPhone MMS but the guy was short with me.
It's just like sending a text. Now there is a little camera button by the text line and that brings up a menu to either chose a pic from an album or take a new pic. It puts the picture right in the screen and sends it just like your texts and saves it there as well. receiving is the same way. A picture pops up and you view it, from there can save it or forward it or whatever you like..
I think you can use it on other countries, just USA is blocking it or not making it work or whatever you want to believe they're doing.
Nobody I know uses MMS. MMS is age old technology that is holding us back from improving ways that we distribute pictures, sound, video, etc.
Everyone I know (and everyone they know) publishes photos, videos, etc. on Facebook. Don't want to send it publicly? Send it in a private message. Can't send stuff through Facebook? Get a better phone.
No point in paying for MMS messages or MMS plans when the internet already accomplishes this and more. There's a heck of a lot of iPhone hating trolls on engadget.
i have the iphone 3g and it isnt stile campatible with MMS.. apple is really starting to piss me off!!!!
The reason the iPhone 1,1 does not support MMS is due to its lack of 3G.. That's what Apple meant by "different radio" not sure about the A2DP bluetooth though..
