People are interested because of the technology and in anticipation that we will see this in future versions of E-books that will be available in the rest of the World. By that time it's assumed that the price will come down. Even at $359, the Kindle is still priced more then what most people can afford.
For those looking for a device strictly for reading, the new Kobo is a nice little option. It's small enough to slip into a pocket, can do more with a PDF than the competition, and at $129, it's $10 cheaper than both the Nook and Kindle WiFi.

I don't mind $1000 bucks so much but when I heard it was $1010 I thought "ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR DAMN MINDS?!"
