Iomega NAS gets BitTorrent support, some other stuff

Iomega announced several free upgrades to its StorCenter ix2 NAS yesterday, the most exciting of them being PC-less BitTorrent support and remote access capabilities, enabling uploading / downloading via FTP. As for the other upgrades, the company has added Apple Protocol support, jumbo frames to speed up those large file transfers, and folder quotas. All the upgrades are available through an Iomega update, and while the remote access is free for the first year, it'll cost you $9.95 every year thereafter. The 1TB ix2 can be yours for around $299, while the 2TB runs about $470.

I love how the MacBook Pro is running Windows XP. Typical advertising nowadays.
Justin @ Mar 18th 2009 2:28PM
I was just thinking that poor MacBook Pro. It should at least be enamored with Windows Vista, or better yet 7. OR BETTER STILL, what it came with OS X. :P
Bokal @ Mar 18th 2009 12:27PM
Just buy a Synology.
Best value for NAS. Very good community. And to my knowledge, one of the very few NAS that do DLNA UPnP (PS3 owners will understand)
emcretrospect @ Mar 18th 2009 12:41PM
The Iomega ix series also do DLNA and UPnP. The software stack on those is pretty damn cool.
Disclosure: I work for EMC.

Sweet Bit Torrent on my phone cool another feature I will never use.
Sea Urchin @ Mar 18th 2009 12:31PM
BitTorrent..........I am sure of of the stuff that is downloaded is 100% legal.

Chird @ Mar 18th 2009 12:34PM
Yeah but is that 9.95 a year? Or a month?

telepheedian @ Mar 18th 2009 10:23PM

jflex @ Mar 18th 2009 12:39PM
Parallels, ho!
Level 5 @ Mar 18th 2009 12:42PM
Hoes? Where?
Josh @ Mar 18th 2009 4:22PM
Why parallels? It's more likely to be boot camp.
esporenthead @ May 12th 2009 10:03AM
VMware Fusion is better.
indiger @ Mar 18th 2009 12:51PM
is it possible to share content through FTP is you don't want to pay for this service?
IAmALlama @ Mar 18th 2009 1:17PM
Is the remote access through their website/server? Is it not run locally on the device? I would be afraid that if you access the device through their website/server that they would have remote access (backdoor or master username/password) to your data.

I like how the 2tb version is $170 more then the 1tb version(for that price your better off getting the 1tb throwing a 2tb drive in and its like having an extra 1tb as a free bonus.) . It's things like this and paying a reoccurring fee for upgrades! that kill silly companies like iomega. I know computer savvy people are probably the minority but we have a huge sway with our non savvy friends. If someone told me they wanted something like this I'd say pick up a $200 AMD system throw a 2b hard-drive in it for $150 and enjoy transfer rates over 10mb/sec. The arm cpu's in these just can't handle full 100mbit no matter gigabit that every cheap motherboard comes with now. With the $200 AMD system running Ubuntu you could have unlimited storage potential, printer sharing and even a spare system if one so desired.

Any subscription fee, no matter how small, for any feature on my personal NAS, is absolutely, unequivocally out of the question.
dahacker @ Mar 18th 2009 2:08PM
Iomega, please go away with your expensive crappy products. There are millions of us who were burned by your crappy clicking zip drives. None of us will ever store another bit on anything with the Iomega name on it.
telepheedian @ Mar 18th 2009 10:25PM
This is more of an EMC product with Iomega branding. I tried out the old version, but I can't recommend it because my dad got laid off from EMC. Please feel free to grab your copies of VMware and Retrospect from here: http://www.thepiratebay.org.

Just ordered one from Dell for $241 shipped. Here's hoping it doesnt suck...

Do not ever buy Iomega products. I purchased a 1TB (2x500GB) from them. This model looks similar to the ix2. However, the much advertised DLNA media server would not work with PS3. I contacted tech support and they refused to provide a solution. The open source Mediatomb media server has had many updates to make it compatible with PS3 but Iomega has failed to release any firmware update for this model. I have been waiting for more that one year now and there doesn't seem to be any possibility.
The drive started making noise after 1 year warranty period was over. Now I am waiting for the day it fails. Worst company, worst products.

I got the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo about 10 months ago. It has PC-less BitTorrent as well. Loving it.
BigTeebo @ Mar 18th 2009 8:10PM
I balk at subscription software, but subscription hw is even worse. What to do when Iomega finally goes out of business? I would rather find a Linux solution.

We're so far behind Asia in piracy, it's not even funny. Or maybe it is funny.

Actually, Fry's electronics has the 2TB version on the shelf for $349 http://snipurl.com/ejqto. I had purchased the 1TB version for $199 @ Fry's the first week of March. These units rock...
